NOW I CAN BE A TRUE MERMAID
I actually did a report on this last year! The substance is called perfluorocarbon and because of its unique nature, it can hold enough oxygen inside of it for you to breathe it. You can breathe safely while inside it, but sometimes the transition from breathing in the perfluorocarbon and the air can be painful or uncomfortable as your lungs try to push the liquid out of them. In Dan Brown’s book The Lost Symbol, the process of reverting back to breathing the air can feel like being birthed.

FACT:
This liquid is used in modern torture. It is similar to water boarding. A victim is placed in a small completely dark box. The box is then filled with the liquid. The victim thinks they are drowning as they breath the liquid in. Most pass out from fear at this point or they just sit there in the liquid in pitch black, apparently breathing ‘water’. Often it leads to the thought that they are in fact dead. It is completely terrifying. Then the box is opened and they are violently pulled from it. As said before the transition from liquid to air is none too pleasant. You might be told something like, they resuscitated you and to tell them what you know or they will “drown” you again.

Yes, but it can also be quite useful. It’s still very experimental but could help treat patients with pulmonary or cardiac damage, or for deep-sea diving and space travel. The fluid filling the lungs keeps the lungs inflated and prevents extreme pressure from collapsing the ribcage so liquid breathing could help humans explore parts of the ocean or space that we could never survive in otherwise.

my best friend is an atheist, but whenever she is comforting me with something in my life she uses examples of God to help me because she knows it makes me feel better, and vice versa, when i comfort her i never bring up God because i respect that it’s not something that helps or works for her
i feel like this is a model of how the world should work
that is perfect
you can ship something and
- still understand and respect that a particular character wouldn’t be into the relationship at that point in time or ever
- accept it if the characters never get together in canon
- be completely fine with other people not shipping it
- not hate the characters’ canon relationships or romantic/sexual partners
- realize that being in a sexual/romantic relationship with the other character(s), or with anyone at all, might not be healthy for one or both of the characters
- if the characters are already in a sexual/romantic relationship with each other, acknowledge that there are things about that relationship that are fucked up and unhealthy
- admit each character’s faults honestly and not excuse them (understanding =/= excusing)
- differentiate between what you want to see in canon and what you want to write/read about in fic/see in art
- understand that ships serve different needs for different people; not every ship or representation of a ship is about healthy, loving romantic relationships. Some ships are about unhealthy codependency; some are about hatesex. Ships are a way of working out fantasies that we can’t and sometimes shouldn’t fulfill in real life, or about working through real-life fears, hopes, and pains. Writing something is not tantamount to saying “this is 100% awesome”. Sometimes we have to indulge our ids, and that doesn’t mean we get a free pass to not think about issues of representation or ensure that the people reading our fics know what to expect, but it all comes down to, for me, the fact that life is too fucking short and painful to have to feel like shit for what goes on in our heads so long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else.

So many times Ran has had the upper hand. She could have made him say it before he went… Like it was going around before, I hope what we saw of London wasn’t it. There has to have been more to it. It had to have been better.
I mean, look at this version of Mouri Ran – she makes fun of him for always leaving her but she’s already accepted Shinichi wholeheartedly. There’s no wavering in her affections. Yes, at the end of this case she is horribly disappointed he stood her up, and she has every right to be, but later in the series her affection for Shinichi is tinged in doubt for him. That he doesn’t love her. That he’s with someone else. But Ran, from the beginning of the series, liked Shinichi before he told her anything. She believed in him even when he was giggling over all the letters he’d get from his fangirls. Why did Ran’s confidence have to be changed when it was a simple story of absence makes the heart grow fonder from Shinichi’s side? He was the more clueless one after all.
I’ve been arguing for the fact that more things went on in London that we didn’t see, but everyone tends to disagree. I dunno, I was kind of disappointed with the reveal (it sucked, let’s be real here, just like that case) and a part of me is just hoping that Aoyama didn’t leave us with such a lame ending like that. So I’m hoping for and expecting something more to be revealed when Ran is feeling awful in a flashback to remind her why she stays strong. Just a reminder that Ran is one of the best and strongest characters in this series. Anyone who disagrees or has an irrational hatred for her is something that I will never understand.
I think a lot of it has to do with the length and the close calls. All the times that she’s had to deal with just a phone call or a text from him, the less that she sees him, the more it starts to bother her. No matter how strong someone is, they will crack at some points, sometimes things will hurt more than they usually do. I feel like each and every time he’s done something to unintentionally hurt her it broke her just a little bit more and more. After awhile, “I’ve got a big case, I gotta run!!” just gets tiring to hear for her. And the more he realizes he’s hurting her, the more he realizes his feelings for her. I feel like her slowly hurting over his disappearing more and more is actually quite accurate, and makes some sense, even if in general doing it like this was a dumb move in the first place on Aoyama’s part. He really has done quite a number to Ran’s character.
I still think that he should have confessed his love for her far sooner. And not just some crap about the heart of the person one likes, just tell her that he loves her more than anything else in this world. I know he’s afraid of making her more worried, but FFS he’s made it to the point where telling her how he feels is what will soothe her and her heart the most. Knowing that no matter where he is, he still truly loves her. This is what we should have gotten. Want to not make her cry like you claim, Shinichi? Tell her the truth.
But, of course, no one ever accused Gosho Aoyama of being a good romance writer.
TOTALLY in the camp of more going on in London. After all, they disappeared for the whole evening and no one saw them until the next morning. Not that that happened, but I bet they talked at the very least, and finally spent some quality time together. Because srsly.
We better find out what happened that evening. I have been dying to know since that chapter and scouring for any mention of London ever since.
