hey, how do you customize calico critters in detail? I really want to do one for my sister to make a black cat using the Persian.

So I’ve only done it a couple of times (I want to do it more, but I haven’t made time for it), but I can definitely point you at some resources! It’s a lot of fun and it’s deceptively simple. The big key is PATIENCE… you want to use a small brush and paint each of the flocked hairs on the figure with thin coats of acrylic paint and build up the color very slowly so that it never gets heavy or clumped.

Here’s the post where I turned my little white baby bunny into a dutch rabbit.

This post shows how I turned the grey tabby cat into an Egyptian fruit bat (MUCH more involved with a LOT more photos)…

Neither of these really explain the process much, of course, but don’t worry- I GOTCHU… there are many others who have made brilliant custom Calico Critters (otherwise known as Sylvanian Families), such as this Cheetah Family, explained in great detail.  That should give you a fantastic start where my posts are lacking…

AND… if that isn’t enough, there’s an entire community for the Sylvanian Family/Calico Critters, which has a forum for DIY, and lots more fun projects that you can explore, right here: http://sylvanianfamiliesforum.co.za/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=13

Please go and enjoy! They’re all very friendly and wonderful. 🙂

Let me know if you have any more questions after reading these and I’ll do my best to help… and please share photos when you’re done! I’d love to see what you do!

Happy customing!

Oh wait, the rest of the scale weapons came in. I think I’m going to need to get my bounty hunters another trunk.

…And tons of tiny beer cans.

My “baby Heiji” got here in the mail yesterday and he’s STILL TOO BIG. The original child bear is on the left, with new “baby” in the middle, and an actual Calico Critters baby on the right.

I know that he’s a giant for a Japanese teenager, but he was smol as a child so we’re trying again…

One of these will become… BABY HEIJIKINS.

….I have also won ebay auctions for a calico critter version of Akira and a Heiji (used, CHEAP), and have sourced where I can get a Hakuba and a Kaito in the same set. From Australia (new).

I also found a person that makes custom outfits for them… so I can get all of the Space AU gear commissioned. T~T This is going to be a long-term project.

All that’s left is to find me a Shinichi, and I THINK I can pick him up at most retailers here, so in the next few weeks, I will just go to Toys R Us or Target and pick up a set. Hopscotch bunnies + a lot of black acrylic paint GO.

I would not be surprised if I end up making baby versions of everyone, too. >_>;;;; ugh my life. Aaron says it’s perfectly fine to like to collect toys but man I feel silly. But I guess I don’t have kids to buy toys for….
