Currently writing the to-do/packing list for the con that we’re supposed to be leaving for in a couple of hours. Sabakon in Las Vegas, Nevada! Is anyone else going? Besides bear and zed I mean. 🙂
…yeah, okay, I should have been packed last night, but I got prints made yesterday and stayed up super late cutting out the sheets for the big buttons. Will probably cut out the smaller ones on the 6ish hour drive to Vegas… and assemble some new button stock tonight at the hotel – riveting fun, right?
I still haven’t completely unpacked from Confuzzled. My suitcase still has lots of the UK in it. Sob. I MISS IIITTTTTTtt T-T; <3
Free!, as described by it’s creators, is a “swimming story about friendship and bonds.” Unlike most hot-blooded sports series where the sport is the crux of the plot, in Free! swimming serves merely as a back drop for a classic coming of age story.
Like everyone else, I started watching Free! for the hot bodies and swimming… but as the story progressed, I became engrossed in the narrative structure of the series. This is a literary analysis and trope driven deconstruction of Haruka’s progress throughout the story.
In short, the Hero’s Journey is an archetypal pattern that supports the narrative of many stories, usually epic quests like Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings.
So, that being said… how does Haruka Nanase’s story, as the protagonist of a slice-of-life sports anime, compare to that of epic heroes like Harry Potter and Luke Skywalker?

That is one of the mascots for Anime Vegas that I designed. He was on the staff t-shirts last year. 🙂 He’s, uh, basically Conan as a white tiger cub, but you didn’t hear that from me… Anyway, I call him Rampo.
I have no idea what they’re doing this year, though. I don’t appear to be on staff anymore… and I can’t go, anyway. o_o
