I spent the evening working on commissions (instead of the comic, sorry!) and now I’m so dizzy that I’m gonna go pass out now. Doctor’s appointment in the morning – wish me luck!
I’ve seen very little talk about hyper empathy so here’s some examples of it:
it can feel like the emotions of others are permeating a space and/or spilling into you causing high anxiety even when they’re not directed towards you/you’re not expected to react to them.
some people experience it by not being able to handle world tragedies or negative news reports because they feel a highly personal connection to the pain in those people with no way to help them.
this is something that a lot of autistic people deal with, so it makes me sad that I’ve seen basically no information about it in the communities on here
I would write a lot about this right now but I don’t have the right words stored in my brain yet. But this is definitely a thing and I’ve been writing about it for years. It can be part of being ‘sensing’ which Donna Williams wrote a whole book about. It can also be part of other things. The writing is out there, it’s just hard to find unless you know where to look.
…Oh, wow, I had no idea some of these things were a hyper-empathy thing.
I often end up experiencing a feeling similar to sensory overload when I overhear people yelling angrily at each other. Or even, in some cases, when seeing angry back-and-forth conversations on Tumblr. Somehow I never managed to connect this to hyper-empathy, but it totally makes sense in retrospect.
When I was a kid whenever I broke pencil lead I had to rub the tip of the pencil to make it feel better. I still do this, but I’ve also gotten much better at not breaking the lead.

I totally got hit on while waiting for the train this morning. It was awkward. And the second someone else sat near us, the guy got up and left.
I wanted to share what I wrote for this morning’s word war (I won, btw):
Limerick gave me a pointed look. I frowned. “What?” “You’re doing it again.” I looked at my hand. It was resting on the back of Limerick’s shoulders. “What, this?” His yellow eyes narrowed to thin lines of gold in a sea of black. “What do you think?” I petted him again, fingers dipping into the thick fur between his shoulder blades. “Cats usually like being petted, don’t they?” “You have no idea about cats, do you?” I actually didn’t know, since Mom never let me have a pet before, but shrugged. “You’re purring, anyway.” He blinked, eyes going from gibbous to full moon in surprise. “I – what?” And then he stopped to listen to himself, and there it was: a deep, rumbling purr in his chest. Limerick’s eyes went half-moon and glared up at me. “Stop. Stop this at once.” “You like it!” I stroked down the line of his spine. “Doesn’t your master ever pet you?” “No, of course not. Have a sense of propriety; I’m a Familiar, not a normal house cat!” “Sorry,” I said, but kept petting anyway. He didn’t move. Soon, he settled into a loaf next to my leg, eyes completely closed. “You’re a terrible person, Salmon Coal,” Limerick said. “Yeah, I’m the worst.” I moved up to scratching behind his ears, then down to his neck, rubbing the loose skin over muscle. “Ah, yes, scratch right at my neck there – thank you.” “You’re welcome.”

Telling a fat person that they are disgusting doesn’t help.
Telling a fat person who has no problem with how they are that they are gross and unacceptable is like air lifting them to a pedestal in the middle of a vast, lonely ocean and leaving them there to sit and think about how “naughty and bad” they’re being.
Telling a fat person who’s already dieting and exercising that they are unhealthy and killing themselves upon judging them without knowing them is like cutting the rope they’re using to climb a mountain that’s already so steep.
Telling a depressed fat person that all their worries and insecurities will melt away when they shed the kilos is like putting foundation over a scar and saying it isn’t there anymore.
Telling a fat person they have no right to love themselves ,whether they plan to lose their weight or not, is telling them they have no right to live a happy life.
Telling that little girl that she has to lose weight to be like her classmates and be loved as much as them doesn’t make her want to lose her weight, it makes her put on more.
So no, Nicole, Shaming doesn’t help people. It never will.
