Happy Valentine\u2019s Day! \u2665<\/p>\n

In all honesty I\u2019m not a very conventionally romantic person. I don\u2019t hate Valentine\u2019s, but I don\u2019t particularly have much of an opinion of it either. That said I think it\u2019s never a bad thing to celebrate love in all its forms, whether on a special occasion like today or just because.<\/p>\n

So this post aims to do just that. Let\u2019s count down to one! (I\u2019ll just put this caveat upfront that it\u2019s almost all either SouRin or MakoHaru so you can look away if you don\u2019t enjoy either ship\u2026)\u00a0<\/p>\n

bonus: SouRin\u2019s \u201cI want to be your friend!\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Ok I lied, actually there are six moments. I love this scene. It\u2019s genuine, and emotional, and perhaps the most truth that we see from Sousuke all season.<\/p>\n

But why I want to talk about it is because of what gets lost in translation. Here\u2019s what Sousuke is saying in Japanese.<\/p>\n

\n\u300c\u4ffa\u306f\u6c34\u6cf3\u3092\u6b62\u3081\u308d\u3002\u3051\u3069\u3001\u6700\u5f8c\u306b\u3001\u304a\u524d\u3068\u672c\u5f53\u306e\u4ef2\u9593\u306b\u306a\u308a\u305f\u3044\u3002\u51db\u3001\u304a\u524d\u3068\uff01\u300d<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And this is what I would translate it as, quite literally. The subs are not wrong<\/i>, but I don\u2019t think they fully convey Sousuke\u2019s meaning either.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m going to stop swimming. But, at this final moment, I want to become true friends with you. Rin – with you.”<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

See the slight difference? The subs highlight it by putting the your<\/i>\u00a0in italics in the last screencap, but Sousuke doesn\u2019t actually even say the word \u201cfriend\u201d in that statement. The emphasis is entirely on the with you<\/i>. It\u2019s really, really sweet, and Rin-centric, and you can feel all of Sousuke\u2019s love for Rin spilling out right here.<\/p>\n
