Karin gazed at him as he bashfully continued speaking, rambling a bit in his nervousness. When he finished his explanation of his behavior off with a question directed at her, she answered by leaning forward and kissing his cheek with an affectionate smile.<\/p>\n

“Hakuba-kun,” she began, her tone laced in fondness, “I\u2019m going to be fine. I would tell you if it were something life-threatening. I trust you, it\u2019s just\u2026ah, it\u2019s nothing. I don\u2019t know. I\u2019m sure you and your fabulous detective-ing skills could deduce it, but I\u2019ll have to ask you not to. It\u2019s not even a big enough deal for me to be in the hospital in the first place,” she visibly lied through her teeth. “My father is just overly concerned. Enough about that, though, tell me about you, your day. Cheer me up.”<\/p>\n

Satisfied that she\u2019d sated his curiosity, the little fragile thing of a baker laid back against her pillows and threaded the fingers on one hand through his absentmindedly, apparently fearing he\u2019d leave now that he had some information.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“I’m loathe to deny the request of a lady, particularly one who needs the aforementioned cheer. I’ll stay out of it. As for my day, well, I went to several meetings this morning concerning a rash of new cases regarding gang activity,” he wet his lips, considering, \u00a0"…and spent two or three hours in court to provide testimonies for some others. At least I can say that I’ve only had to do one short pile of paperwork thus far, though I know that there’s more waiting for me at the office…“\u00a0<\/p>\n

He smiled for her, glancing away from their entwined fingers to watch her face. If he had a pony for every time someone asked him to\u00a0not<\/em> investigate their secrets (which only served to make them more interesting), he would have far too many ponies than was reasonably safe or zoned for his father’s estate. Though, honestly, he wondered if even the acres of land at his mother’s home in England would be enough. Alas, such was the life of a detective.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
