Are you awake?

Gunter wasn’t exactly used to people coming backstage to see him after a show. Not without prior notice, in any case. So while he’d told the few stage workers who lingered afterward to take care of anything that still had to be done that he would be resting in his prep room before leaving himself, the illusionist hadn’t put anything outside the door to say not to disturb him.

And overall, he actually hadn’t meant to fall asleep completely, either. Just relax and close his eyes for a little while. Unfortunately, that hadn’t panned out as planned. To the point where the other coming in didn’t even disturb him too much, just shifting and tilting his head more towards his chest.

“Detective?” The sleep-heavy voice was slightly muffled by the arm Gunter was using for a pillow, but the words were clear enough. And a small smirk tugged up on one corner of his mouth, though not for too long.

“Trying so hard to catch an illusion… as usual…”

The man shifted a little more and hummed, then settled and fell silent, aside from his steady breathing.

“As much experience as you’ve had, detective, I get the feeling you can guess that yourself.”

His voice was dripping with sarcasm. If that wasn’t enough of an answer in and of itself, the small tilt of a mocking grin might be.

"I’ll take that as a yes, then,” the teenager said with a tilt of his head. He wanted to challenge the assassin, rile him, get him to recognize that he was, in fact, a threat. Or, at the very least, not afraid of him.

…even though he was terrified.

The detective shrugged, turning his back to the other with a derisive laugh, flippant and perhaps a touch overly confident. “You might be the Spider, but even spiders are prey… and sometimes detectives like to let their prey run free for a while. It makes the hunt all that more… interesting.”

Whisper

While being armed was not uncommon for the detective these days, it was incredibly unlikely for him to actually pull the gun out at any time. Just as his parents, Hakuba was a pacifist to a fault, but everyone, he supposed, had their limits.

His happened to be assassins with which he had a personal grudge against.

Even then, the weapon was meant to be more of an intimidating tactic than anything. Hakuba wanted Spider to know that he was serious, and that he was more than capable of transcending the apparent typical high school detective convention where necessary. And, now that it was after a heist, and he’d tracked Spider to a place he imagined the assassin thought was safe, it was time to show that he meant business, coming up behind him to press the barrel of the gun against Spider’s back.

“I can be cruel if I have to,” he whispered, smirk tugging at his lips.

He would be Spider’s Sherlock yet.

“…My sympathies go to your hearing, detective. The thief may be irritating, but at least he keeps people’s senses intact… I would help out, if only to spare myself from…. that…. However…”

image

[…Yeah, he’s not allowed to throw needles directly at people at random. Even if he would probably just be using tranquilizers… Sorry ‘bout Kai’s encouragement, Hakuba *nods head in a slight bow before retreating, because sensitive cat ears*]

image

"Pardon?! What did you say, Spider?! I can’t hear you over all of this BLOODY NOISE!”

image

“Ne ne, Hakuba, I stopped singing a while ago.”

image

“Huh?! SPEAK UP!”

I guess I’m louder than I thought…

“…What do you think’s worse, a tone-deaf kid who sometimes gets taunted into torturing people’s ears, or a too cheerful thief who constantly sings every song that comes to mind? Mostly Disney songs. Over and over, even when the other people in the headspace and even the mun at times are ready to strangle him…”

“Aww, c’mon… You need to learn to let it go~♪

"…Frozen especially…

I know that song!

"I’m afraid that I’m going to have to side with the assassin on this one, Kaitou-san… look what you’ve done!”

thenightmarebyyourside:

“Oh? Is that why you have such an odd catchphrase? Because it’s a bit strange for a detective to trap others, and then ask why they committed their crimes…” The assassin chuckled some and brought his arms down to cross over his chest.

“Feel free to try and find reasons and motivations all you like. Telling, however, would be making your job too easy, detective. Not exactly something I’d like to do.”

“I assumed not,” Hakuba said, tilting his head at the man with a sort of pensive hesitation. “But I do always like to ask. After all, a lie or even a refusal to answer is more data for me to collect and analyze, and one cannot draw any sort of useful conclusion without that.”

He shrugged, then, looking content as he turned his head away, smile smug as if he’d already won some sort of game. “I must ask if you truly feel trapped by me, however. You can give me that at the very least, can’t you?"

thenightmarebyyourside:

…So serious all of the sudden. Hmm… Not what he’d been expecting the other to say, but it did make him pause the taunts.

“…I’m not one much for guessing motivations. That’s more up your alley, detective.”

He raised a hand to his face, leaning his head on a couple of fingers, slight frown forming. Not that he didn’t get curious from time to time, the assassin just didn’t particularly care, since knowing them didn’t change much.

"So, pray tell, if you really do believe you have enough to successfully arrest, haven’t you?”

Not that he was really expecting an answer. If the detective was trying to get him to guess, it was more likely he wouldn’t anyway.

"It’s really quite simple, Mr. Goldberg…” The detective regarded him with an even expression, though the glint in his eyes was challenging if nothing else. “When given the choice, I won’t turn my quarry over until I’ve learned the whole truth. Without understanding your modus operandi, it is impossible for me to feel truly satisfied with the case.”

Hakuba touched a hand to his lips before tapping his chin, gaze darkening the longer he watched him. “But I don’t suppose you’d favor me in telling such a thrilling secret, would you? Those motivations are what I’m after, more than anything.”

Amaranth, begonia, lily, zinnia, dill, sycamore

thenightmarebyyourside:

AMARANTH:Broken-hearted
BEGONIA:Warning
LILY (ORANGE):Hatred
ZINNIA:Memories
DILL:Lust
SYCAMORE:Curiosity

Okay, cue a small frown at the sudden presentation of flowers. Though he felt a vague curiosity himself as to the lack of lavender, but the inclusion of amaranth and mildly at zinnia. The rest he wasn’t too surprised at… well aside from the dill.

“…Thank you for the… unexpected bouquet, detective.”

…Okay, he does have to take out the amaranth and raise a questioning brow.

“…I don’t suppose you’d be willing to explain why these particular choices, hmm?”

“I’m afraid that I’ll have to leave you in the dark, Spider… But I hope you enjoy the mystery.”
