“Oh?”

The thief arched a brow, his attention caught and, even though he knew it would definitely be in his own best interests to not rise to the bait, he couldn’t help but allow himself to return the tease.

“So,” he began, head cocking to the side and grin widening just the slightest hint. “You’re saying if I had asked first, you would have…given it to me yourself?“

The detective, feeling some degree of success at having successfully pushed the conversation, canted his head to the other side, mirroring Kid with a determined smirk.

"Oh, that might be what I’m saying… really, there’s only one way to know. Why don’t you try it, Kaitou-san?” Hakuba glanced around at the empty room around them, shrugging his shoulders casually. “This seems like a good time and a fine location. Go ahead. Ask me."

The magician heaved a mental sigh of relief when Hakuba didn’t say anything about his choice in movie and flashed a small grin in return as he took the case, popped it open and showed the disk into the DVD-player in front of him.

“Of course I did. What, you don’t trust me?” It’s said in a mostly teasing tone, but there’s a hint of seriousness there that he couldn’t quite get rid of. As…surprisingly nice the little visit had been so far, Kaito still couldn’t help but feel slightly antsy – almost waiting for the usual tense atmosphere and arguments about him being KID or not and the accusations that came with them. And then there was the simple fact that they were at his house…

He shook his head.

Hakuba hadn’t done anything so far and they were having a, if not good, then at least decent time together and he had no desire to ruin that.

“Don’t worry,” Kaito said, getting to his feet. “I’m pretty sure your rootbeer and the pizzas are gonna be here any second.“

The detective gave a sigh of relief himself, though this was audible and somewhat exaggerated. "I hope so. As much as I’d love to trust you as far as I can throw you – which might be a surprising distance considering how squirrely you are – I’m rather anxious to try it."

Truthfully, Hakuba did want to bring up the Kid business. It seemed ridiculous that they were forced into such an awkward standing with each other.  Hakuba had figured out the secret and still hadn’t turned Kaito in, so why was it such a big deal? Why the constant denial and forced, arbitrary degree of separation?

Maybe it was not knowing the answer to that question that bothered him most of all.

Getting comfortable, Hakuba pulled the silver pocket watch out and looked at the time, comparing it to the watch on his wrist, then flipped it closed with a little snap.

"When is your mother expected back? Er, if I can ask…”

“Hakuba and the others belong in there. I, on the other hand, do not.

Hakuba belongs in the list of people who makes me look like a midget

Shattering your hopes and dreams but

Nope, you /do/ belong there. You’re the most perfect one in that position 8D

"It’s nice to see that the Kids are properly taking care of Hannah in shifts… My, you’ve been busy this morning, haven’t you?”

“B-BAAYAAA! I NEED YOU! HELP!”

“Young Master, what in –  WHAT IN THE BLOODY BLUE BLAZES DID YOU DO?!”

I didn’t do ANYTHING.”

“…you look a bit like one of those… Japanese anime characters now.”

“Baaya. Please. You are not helping and I specifically requested help.”

“Yes, yes, of course… We definitely don’t want your father to see.”

So much shuddering.

“I know you’re supposed to be a detective and all, but slow down on the questions, would you?” he snorted, unable to help but grin lightly. “Yeah, it’s good. And obviously. Why would I take it out if I didn’t want to watch it? Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti and Jessica Biel’s in it and it’s, ah…" Trailing off, a hint of embarrassment flashed across Kaito’s face, but he averted his gaze before Hakuba would be able to notice.

“…It’s kind of a mystery love story, I guess. About a magician using his skills to try to get the woman he loves, who’s far above his own social standing.”

Hakaba turned the dvd case over to look through the various features and information presented. “Mystery love story,” he repeated, then looked back at Kaito. “Okay, sure. That sounds good."

The detective offered it back with a grin. Had he noticed any nervousness or embarrassment? If he had, he didn’t show it, almost as if he were too busy feeling contentment at having been allowed to stay in the first place.

He checked his watch. "And you made sure to order rootbeer, right?”

“A marshmallow?” The thief couldn’t help but laugh, lightly and quietly, at that, despite the flash of embarrassment the question brought back with it. “I suppose I might be. Sometimes.“

He hadn’t forgotten about their previous conversation though, but it seemed Hakuba had no further desire to continue it and as concerned as it really did make him, KID wasn’t about to put further pressure on him.

From the looks of it, that was far from what the detective needed.

So instead, he – a little reluctantly, because as well as he hid it, it was rather embarrassing. In a lot more ways than one – went along with the change in subject, lips quirking into a small, teasing grin. “But a thief is a thief and as much as that was a delivery, I did steal something too, didn’t I?”

Hakuba was greatly relieved that the change in topic had been accepted, and he smirked faintly at the question. “Steal something? I suppose that you did, yes… but I wonder if that’s only because you didn’t ask first.”

The detective wondered briefly if he was tempting fate. It would be so easy for KID to reject even that little tease. But then, the thief had broken into his bedroom in the middle of the night. And, under pretense of a delivery or not, that probably said something. Hakuba wanted to know what.

Of course Hakuba would say something like that. It didn’t surprise the thief in the slightest nor did it do anything to stop another flash of concern from flickering across his face.

“So you say. But I would advise you to not underestimate the power of nightmares, detective,” he said quietly, fixing a serious look on the taller teen. “Or lack of sleep.“

He knew perfectly well the risks of working too hard and not having time for sleep and, he assumed, what with Hakuba’s own occupation, the same kind of dangers applied to him as well. Being unfocused and losing concentration – especially during a critical point in a risky situation – and more was not something to underestimate.

…He looked exhausted.

"Have you tried sleeping pills? They might at least keep the dreams away for a while.”

Hakuba frowned. He’d said too much. The last thing he wanted was for KID to worry about him. Actually, that wasn’t true, but he certainly didn’t want to burden the thief with unnecessary drama.

“Mm. I’ll, ah, try that. Thank you."

The detective stifled a yawn and hesitated. Kaitou was concerned, or at least was doing a good job of making it seem like he was. So he laughed, tired but amused.

"Since when do you take delivery requests? I thought stealing was your modus operandi. Don’t tell me that you’re really just a marshmallow under all of that fine silk.”
