Conan waited until the door clicked closed before turning back to the briefcase that had been left behind. Either Hakuba was really upset or he’d meant to leave it behind. Regardless, if he knew that much about the burglaries, there was sure to be some useful information inside. He crept over to it, tested the latches, and frowned to find that it was, in fact, locked.
Had he known then that Hakuba would never be returning for the briefcase, he might not have waited to open it. Instead of hiding it behind the filing cabinet for later sneaking, Conan might have discovered that Hakuba had been very busy investigating the burglaries and the syndicate involved. He’d also have found the death threat addressed to the foreign that had been delivered to the station earlier that morning.
But he didn’t know. And so, Conan tucked the briefcase away and went about his evening, completely unaware that he was one of the very last people to see Hakuba alive.
i’ve read a bunch of sherlock holmes but it was a while ago so i’m not getting quite what they mean by all the references but holmes’ references are exactly how shinichi and hakuba would communicate so good job
