He’d seen it the night before on the rooftop, just that little glint of silver peeking out from under his sleeve, but it hadn’t surprised him. Confronting the assassin Spider always had that effect, and he had come to accept it. It had done the same for several dangerous people that he’d gone up against, so much so that he almost wasn’t even worried about it anymore. At least he’d managed to save Kaitou KID from the same fate.

For one more heist, anyway.

The next morning was his first day at Ekoda High School, and though the young detective was tired, he was relieved to get back to a sort of normal routine. Summer had been filled with cold cases and moving back to Japan for the year abroad, and while he knew that it would take some adjustments to get used to the Japanese school system again, he felt fairly confident that he could handle it. Introductions went well, and he sidled past the gawking fangirls and territorial young men to take his place at the desk designated by the teacher.

Typical. He was prepared for anything.

That was, of course, until the break between homeroom and the rest of his classes, when a pair of students wandered over to his desk to introduce themselves. Nakamori Aoko, who he recognized as the inspector’s daughter, and… Kuroba Kaito… who, upon making eye contact, brought on that same, searing pain in his wrist that Spider had.

Hakuba sucked in a breath, mind flicking through the information that he’d had stored away for various profiles, and leaned back in his desk uncomfortably. “A pleasure to meet you both,” he muttered, and searched for his pocket watch to deal with the sudden wave of anxiety that crushed his insides like a serpent coiled around a helpless rodent. “If you’ll excuse me, though, I really need to get my homework organized… thank you…”

When they had left, the blond snuck a peek at his wrist, hiding it under his desk. Sure enough, the mark was glowing again, bright and vivid. But who was Kuroba? And why would he kill him…?

It was the policy of the police to give a mark 24 hours to cease activity before taking a person in, so Hakuba didn’t feel particularly pressured as he slid into the darkened room with the other man. No one could blame him for following protocol, even if the mark burned, hidden under his sleeve.

He’d known that it would eventually come to it, anyway; murder in the form of a psychotic individual that would somehow manage to get under his skin. How else would anyone get close enough? There had been inklings before, little glimmers, little pricks of pain when they made love before, when they discussed the complex politics of differing kingdoms. Saphir wasn’t stable, and he knew that.

In fact, he was counting on it. After all, what was the fun in being murdered if it couldn’t be through a close an intimate affair?

He’d known that the Koushien could be dangerous, mostly because there was so much about it that had been so off from the very beginning, but Hakuba hadn’t expected this. The detective was good at feeling out motive and intent on any typical day, but there was nothing that presented such clarity as the mark on the back of his wrist.

It was mostly covered by the watch that he wore, and he dutifully checked throughout the day just in case, as he’d seen it happen far too many times. Marks glowing, people dying. Murder was everywhere. Being a detective, he always knew that it would eventually happen to him, too, but… a teenager? A fellow detective?

Hakuba adjusted his suit jacket so that the sleeve covered the mark a little better, hoping that the soon-to-be-killer hadn’t seen it.

“I see” he said, continuing on with what he’d been saying before it had caught his attention. “So you’re Hattori Heiji-kun… My father speaks well of you.”
