Oh but it’s true. Do you want to know how he begged for it? How much he said he wanted it? How he laid down and took all of it like an obedient pet? That he screamed and sobbed like a little brat because he bit off more than he could chew.

It wasn’t the first time that he’d heard of the incident… but while he originally dismissed it, further research proved far more troubling than he’d anticipated. Hakuba pulled out his mobile to send a text while he scrolled through the forums, brows furrowed. Dread and horror filled him slowly, ache like the gnawing cold of rising flood water.

[text] Just checking in. Hullo!

He’d seen Kaito just recently, hadn’t he? Or spoken to him, at the very least. Really, the detective had been so busy since returning from his trip to London that the past week and a half had been little more than a blur. Still, though, this sort of thing didn’t happen to Kaitou Kid. It just didn’t. …did they?

[text] Would you like to do something later?

Hakuba stretched, leaning back in his chair as the information sunk in. From the video clips that had been posted, it was a simple enough task to determine the approximate location of the scandal, but even with that, it was difficult to ascertain if any of it was legitimate or not. Sex tapes and snuff films were popular among a particular crowd, and many adopted celebrity or character personas to draw in a larger audience. It was a disgusting practice, but unfortunately one of the things that a detective had to deal with from time to time.

[text] Are you still asleep~?

As the seconds ticked by – which Hakuba verified via pocket watch – his anxiety deepened. To act or not? If it really was his Kuroba Kaito, he needed to be there immediately. If it wasn’t, did he risk revealing that he had a particular and personal interest in the thief’s wellbeing? While it was true that he hadn’t made the claim that they were enemies recently, and he was one of the forefront members of the Kaitou Kid task force, there was easily cause for concern that he could become emotionally compromised without due cause, betraying his secret. Both of their secrets.

[text] Kuroba, I really need to know that you’re all right

What to do? He’d need to proceed with caution, regardless. Sighing, he set to work drafting a reply to one of the forum threads.

leprofessorholmes posted:

Has anyone been able to confirm this yet? Or, more importantly, has anyone reported the incident to the authorities?

That was all that he really felt he could discuss openly on the matter; it all upset him too much. Kuroba or not, those who took photos, recorded video, or stared instead of immediately informing the police were nothing but cruel abusers, themselves. And, had it been staged, it was at the very least a matter of public indecency. How did this sort of thing happen? So many had died simply because the available people had chosen to be spectators instead of heroes. He knew that all too well. Paparazzi was such a dirty word.

…and why the personal messages? A trap, perhaps. After all, Hakuba had made many enemies in his profession, so it wasn’t completely unlikely. He picked up his phone again, this time attempting to call his classmate, but was met with voicemail. After a brief ‘please get back to me as soon as possible,’ he hung up and began dialing the station to see if there had been any reports made.

But before he could hit the ‘call’ button, another call came in.

“Hakuba Saguru speaking.”

“Hakuba. Where are you right now?”

“Conan-kun?” Hakuba frowned, surprised at the tone and aggressiveness with which the normally sweet boy addressed him. “I’m at my father’s estate in Ekoda. What can I do for you?”

“How fast can you get to Akihabara?”

The blond closed his eyes, taking in a breath while he calculated, again, the ETA for travel time. “Approximately twenty six minutes, though I may be able to shave it to seventeen and a half, dependant on traffic and parking. Why do you ask?” Though he already knew.

You’re the so-called expert on Kaitou Kid. I’m calling you in.”

That was all the confirmation that Hakuba needed, and was out the door and jogging down the hall in an instant.

“Understood. I’m on my way.”

“Heeyy Haakuubbaa,” Kado called, knocking on the detective’s bedroom door, having already let himself in. After a minute of unanswered silence he pushed it open with a hint of irritation. “What was it you wanted to talk abou-” He huffed when he found the detective asleep, going over to shake him awake. “Did you forget you asked me to come ov…” A yelp escaped him followed by him tripping on nothing as the detective rolled over to reveal himself naked. “Itt-ai,” Kado whined with a crimson face.

Kado wasn’t the only one to color. It took less than two heartbeats for the blond detective to wake, realize what had happened, and for the tint to race across his cheeks. “Ah- oh, K-Kado!”

Hakuba sat up quickly – a little bit too quickly – and gathered the blankets around himself with a grimace. Had he forgotten…? Why had he come? Oh, god, right, the meeting.

“Apologies… I… think I may have gone a little overboard with the scotch while I waited for our appointment…"

He swallowed hard, taking a moment to take in the surroundings. Hakuba remembered the hotel room well enough, but when had he gotten undressed? Where had the bottle of scotch gone? And why… why were the balcony doors open? Oh, god, what a headache.

"If you’ll wait, just… a moment, I can get dressed. So sorry, Kado. Thank you for coming."

Send me a ❖ and my muse will kiss yours

Kado bounced up to Hakuba with a grin, bending forward and planting a light kiss on the detective’s lips before jumping back and throwing his hands out. “Tada!”

“…well you’re in a chipper mood, aren’t you~?” Hakuba laughed, shaking his head. “It’s great to see you again, Kado."

Hakuba, Hakuba tell us about Kaito. What do you think about his magic? What do you think about his thievery and his dangerous lifestyle? And his pranks in class? And how many times he’s almost gotten killed? Tell us how you find him utterly precious <3

image

“Kuroba Kaito… is, for the most part, an arrogant arse who enjoys laughing at the expense of others. He’s disruptive in class, inappropriate with the ladies, disrespectful to authority and to his classmates, and insanely stubborn. Despite the evidence that I’ve supplied, he has continued his vehement denial, both in reference to his thinly veiled alter ego and to my trustworthiness.

"The thievery, being a crime, is an unfortunate blemish on his otherwise spotless record. As frustrating and annoying as he is, the pranks that he plays are not something that could be written up except through the school administration, which is hardly something to worry about. I do hope, in fact, that his being a minor and, with the record he has for being a class clown, will help him attain a lighter sentence overall if he is ever arrested for his moonlighting.

"It seems that he realizes, at least in part, just how dangerous the work is, and how serious his crimes are. He’s careful not to be caught, to avoid leaving any traces, and to distance himself from others. In fact, even those who might be his allies are held at arm’s length, sacrificing whatever emotional refuge he might have for this… goal of his, whatever that might be. Clearly, whatever he is seeking is important enough to risk his life and well-being, which he does every single day, not just on his heists.

"The heists themselves are terrifying. I say this as both a spectator and a detective involved in attempting his capture. Although he has tried to put countermeasures into place to reduce risk of injury to all participants, people can and do get hurt. As I’ve pulled back from the chasing, my focus has shifted to scouting the perimeter, watching for would-be assassins. Every heist brings out suspicious characters, some armed, some not, and it’s difficult to tell in the mass of shouting fans who the professionals are.

"Someone such as Spider, for instance, would know precisely when and where to strike. Others, like Delon, only needed a badge to gain clearance, which allowed him to open fire on Kaitou Kid, despite Japan’s strict gun control laws. Kaito plans for many things, but he can’t control everyone. There are far too many variables in play for him to guarantee the safety of anyone. And with Conan-kun and his little friends deeply entrenched in proving themselves with his arrest… God, I’m just grateful that he’s as good as he is. So far, he’s managed. I can only pray that his luck continues to hold out.

"As for the matter of his being ‘precious’… Well, of course, no one can deny that the young man is certainly quite attractive, and his passion for what he does pushes those qualities even further. His dedication is, in a word, enchanting. Spend one afternoon observing him and anyone would be hard pressed to not to be taken by him.

"The smile, the laughter; it’s infectious. And although the pranks he pulls are unnecessary and, honestly, selfish and inconsiderate, the technical skill he employs to pull them off is impressive. That skill he would not have attained without countless hours of focused practice which, I believe, is driven by the love and admiration that he has for his father. It’s difficult to stay mad at someone for demonstrating that, even if it involves turning one’s hair ghastly shades of fluorescent pink.

He exemplifies the order, ‘Keep Calm and Carry On.’ He does his best not to let it show how worn he is by what he does. He’s proud and stubborn, but continues to radiate light despite all of the darkness in this wretched world. I could go on and on about his keen senses, his intelligence, his generosity, and the pointed naivety, but I think it’s suffice to say that I admire him. He may be the one case that proved not to be as simple or open and shut as I previously thought, but I do hope that he continues to surprise me.

"I need him to stay alive and free for that. Life wouldn’t be the same without him. That’s why I’m to protect him, even if he will never believe that to be the case.”
