Rain, Rain, Go Away

Her smile twitched just the slightest. Names and identities, right. She had to try and remember what name she had been using for the past while, needing to make a split second decision on if it was safe to use the same alias or pick a new one. There was never really any guarantee that the stranger wouldn’t connect the dots.

The somewhat short pause was covered as she pulled on the seatbelt. Pretending to be unable to multi-task was something she had picked up over the last few months.

“Izumi would be the name, pleasure to meet you,” a split second decision to use a name she hadn’t used in a long time, coupled with a smile that hopefully seemed friendly enough. “Ah, there is an apartment complex a little ways from here. That’s where I’m headed, if you don’t mind.”

“Not at all, Izumi-san. Really, it’s my pleasure to be of assistance. Dreadful business, being caught in the rain."

Hakuba was speaking in circles, but he hadn’t exactly prepared for this meeting, or the decidedly off feeling that it had about it… Not that he could really place what was strange; it just was.

Regardless, once seat belts were securely fastened, he pulled away from the curb and into the rain, driving down the street at a reasonable speed.

"So, ah…”  he struggled for pleasant small chat topics to cover the silence. “Which school do you attend?” This was typically a safe question to ask; if she were willing to give the information, it would enable him to get a ballpark age range for her. If not, he’d know not to ask any further personal questions at all.

With the door opened, she hesitated only for one second before making a half-jog over as to not slip and fall and look like an idiot. She really could just make her way home while evaporating the water around her, but that wasn’t exactly what she should be doing when she had to keep on the down low in front of the humans. As the human did say, catching her death out in the middle of a shower in the human world wasn’t something she wanted to happen. It would top the stupid ways of dying for a non-human.

“I truly do appreciate this, kind stranger,” closing the door right behind her the second all her limbs were in, she easily settled into the act of the grateful little girl. She wasn’t sure how this would progress into the future, a human did have the tendency to meddle into her business right when she didn’t need them to. The fact that they didn’t have such long lifespans was probably the only good thing to counter that meddling trait of theirs. “You have my gratitude, all of it, truly.”

“Not to worry one bit, miss. It’s really no trouble at all.” Hakuba offered a nod and a smile to her, making sure with a glance at the car’s digital dashboard that the doors were all closed before he pulled out of park.

“Seatbelt, please. Oh, and ah, I should introduce myself! my name is Hakuba Saguru. May I have yours?”  The detective kept his eyes on the rains swept road up ahead, easing his way back into traffic. “Oh, and I suppose I need to get directions to your home or wherever it is you were travelling, too."

Of all things, she just had to get stuck in the rain when she wasn’t at her hundred percent. Having just finished one of the jobs she was given, the idea of relaxing at home in front of a lit fireplace sounded like heaven. Getting caught in the middle of a torrent of water wasn’t exactly what she wanted to deal with as using her abilities in front of the humans would only bring unnecessary attention.

More than anything, the lack of heat in the immediate area only caused her healing to slow. She should have been more careful, retaliation from the target was supposed to be expected. Retaliation from the target in the form of a young non-human wasn’t exactly common though, which caused the injury on her side. It wasn’t too bad, stealing the heat from the immediate area as she walked home had healed it somewhat. Though she was stuck at a standstill as she took shelter under an awning.

At the very least, the jacket she wore hid the injury from prying eyes. Hopefully, she could be on her way soon and be away from the humans. Truly, the privacy of her home and not needing to think of keeping a human-acceptable form would help her heal much faster. She resolved to wait for another five minutes. If the rain hadn’t stopped by then, she would just have to grit her teeth and deal with being drenched.

It was truly dreadful weather to be outside, much less stranded. And while Hakuba had managed to forget his jacket and umbrella, he at least had his car. Top up, the detective made his way through the veritable curtains of rain and cold, driving much less quickly than he would have preferred. But, alas, with the roads in this condition, there wasn’t much else of a choice.

This, however, presented the potentially positive opportunity to assist someone. Had he been going any faster, he might not have seen the girl in the awning. As it was, he wasn’t entirely sure if she really was there or if it had been his imagination. Nevertheless, he slowed his vehicle and came to a stop just a few yards past the girl.

While the idea of leaping from the car to fetch the girl had been somewhat appealing for a few reasons, Hakuba decided it much safer to call from the window, which he leaned over to call to her.

“Ah, excuse me, miss?” Hakuba asked, hoping that his voice reached through the rain. “Do you need a ride?"

He knew that many would not accept the offer from a stranger, but he needed to be sure that he’d done his part and helped if there had been a need.
