Contact him…? I could try… But, what exactly would I be saying to him…?

*She seemed she was at a bit of a loss – she much preferred to put together the entire case before confronting her suspect, but it didn’t seem like there was much else to go on…*

“I’m really not certain. Perhaps need to arrange a meeting with him… There are a few things that I would like to test and observe, personally.”

Hakuba returned to his chair and retrieved the report, going over the paperwork again.

“I may not have any further useful information at this time, I’m afraid.”

“Oh?” Letting Hakuba take charge was an interesting little change of pace. Usually he was leading, as the thief, and the detective followed, even earlier and in other circumstances. He nuzzled Hakuba, relaxing under the touches.

“Really, now?” If he were honest, he was curious about what Hakuba had come up with, but he didn’t want to ruin the moment, especially since Hakuba was stammering so much earlier. But a bit of his pride rejoiced at this. Having one of his detectives “wrapped around his finger" was a nice feeling.

He wanted them happy and safe, in spite of their chase. Easiest if they were attached to him in ways that he could protect them. And it was helpful that it was mutual feeling. (…Now he was starting to understand the logic behind that ‘jewelry box’ metaphor.)

It might have been the alcohol. It could have been the warmth and closeness and subsequent routine attached to that. Perhaps it was the higher-functioning of the detective’s brain shorting out from being fried with far too much traumatic information all at once in conjunction with having crossed a barrier with the one he was most fond of without, apparently, any negative effects. At the moment, he couldn’t comprehend any of it; not completely. So it was ignored and pushed aside for later.

Hakuba relaxed.

“Mmmmm-hmm,” he said, mouth to skin as he moved from KID’s neck to his shoulder, pressing his palm against the small of the thief’s back. The detective rolled his own shoulder, reaching up to pull at his collar, then at the sleeve, undressing himself.

“But I think I’ll make you wait… Wouldn’t want to give too much away all at once.”

Was Hakuba… teasing? The satisfied, almost predatory smirk remained on his lips, even as he closed his eyes and focused his attentions on KID’s neck, next.

*She spent a quick moment looking conflicted; unhappy about getting the choice. She decided to go with the simplest and most related explanation, as planned—*

I have a classmate who has a second personality. This second personality is also a… dangerous individual. They switch either upon a sneeze or a moment of unconsciousness – unfortunate since one faints when they see blood, which became a bit of a nuisance at times. Neither personality remembers events that occur during the other’s time active, and they seem to be at least somewhat separate minds since—

*—And she almost mentioned the mind wipe there, but quickly improvised the rest of the sentence after a short pause—*

—well, I think you understand…

That’s all.

“I can certainly see how that would correlate to the data we’ve collected on Hattori-san.”

Hakuba turned his back to the fireplace to regard the female detective, nodding his head once firmly.

“This opens up many possibilities, doesn’t it? I shall have to re-evaluate prior interactions with this theory in context, and apply it to the case files that I do have in my possession… I suppose my next step after this is to do research to narrow down actual psychological conditions and associated terms… read case studies, doctor reports…”

The detective sighed. It would be interesting and he would gain a lot of helpful information, certainly, but none of it was guaranteed to help Hattori-san. Or Kirigiri-san, for that matter.

“Do you suppose that you’ll contact him, then?”

*She unconsciously straightened herself and kept as much emotion out of her face as possible; taking a moment to consider her answer before speaking rather coldly.*

…You may ask, but I would rather not answer. If I don’t have to speak about it, then I won’t. It’s completely unrelated to this case and I don’t believe it would help in the slightest.

image

*Admittedly, it would probably help if the other detective knew where she was coming from. And she had told bits to Heiji, someone who she knew she couldn’t trust at this time… Maybe she could leave out the part about her own memory loss and get away with it…*

image

…Perhaps… I could tell you… It’s just a bit personal, and concerns people that I shouldn’t reveal secrets about.

Hakuba pursed his lips again briefly, considering, before turning away to look at the fireplace. Her reaction was one he could certainly understand. He was curious – very curious – but that curiosity came at a cost. He levied his position and potential consequences before sighing.

“I do believe it would help in this case, but I will respect your privacy if you do not wish to give the information at this time. Do know, however, that if you do trust me with the information that it will not go any further than my person.”

Well, and into his database case files, but she didn’t need to know that. No one did.

“I will understand and trust your judgment at this juncture.”

I’m starting to regret not following the cases he’s worked on up until now… Perhaps I could have known him a bit better than I do. It could be something subconscious, that it’s something he doesn’t entirely want to be involved in but is aware he can’t break away from…

image

What I know for certain is, whether he wants help or not, I am certainly going to solve this case. Not even being aware of a second personality and what they are doing… It’s incredibly dangerous. Having such memory gaps alone is enough of a cause for concern – it wouldn’t be good if one day he woke up with blood on his hands and a body before him.

image

Perhaps a good step to take would be to find out as much as we can about this other persona. The differences, who they are, the people they see and what they do, and how they came into being. All are probably difficult questions to answer but… it’s much easier to start with questions such as “who" and “what" than something as broad as “why". We assume Hattori Heiji has a more sinister personality. That personality encouraged the idea of two detectives – both well-known in their own fields – being on his case.

*She started to realize they were drifting away from the case itself, which she was hoping to avoid – at least until the fire and the murder were solved. She was sure figuring out the identity of the second personality would solve almost everything, but was there another way…? Perhaps she was grateful for this, because she probably would have done an investigation on him afterwards anyways.*

“I agree that it is dangerous, and feel that I can also agree with your logical course of action. For the time being, assume that he does, and gather more information.”

Hakuba folded his hands behind his back, still pacing in front of the fireplace.

“As for Hattori’s case files, I have a record of his history- at least as far as cases that had reports filed to the police. His private cases, however, are something that I don’t have access to other than what news clippings I have been able to gather. I shall look into what I have and let you know if I recognize any sort of pattern or relevant information.”

The detective paused, then, and looked back to the girl with an apprehensive arch of a brow.

“Might I ask what your experience is with the psychological aspect of this case? I must admit that I’m quite curious.”

KID didn’t have a clue what that meant, though the tone was indicative. The shirt slipped off easily and he took the moment to give another kiss, slipping his hands down to Hakuba’s hips.

Hunger was an apt metaphor for this. The taste of scotch was still on Hakuba’s lips and this just made KID more enthusiastic.

After the kiss, Hakuba discarded the shirt over the edge of the bed. He then took a brief moment to loosen his tie the rest of the way, slipping it from his neck with one hand. The other he placed on KID’s thigh and slid it to his hip, then around to his back. Fingers traced up KID’s back, appreciating the warm, smooth skin. Briefly, he leaned away, reaching down to assist as he kicked off his shoes.

Then it was back to the thief, lowering his head to kiss at his shoulders and collarbone.

“I had a speech prepared,” he said, voice soft between each nibbling kiss. “All about how you have your detective wrapped around your finger…"

It seemed safe enough to admit that piece of information, and although he was far more comfortable showing his desire than talking about it, he couldn’t resist the opportunity to test boundaries. That is, if they even existed at all.

Mentally keeping track of where his hand was, she laughed and said, “How kind of you to say so, but you give me far too much credit. I am but a simple girl who likes her fun.“

Keeping her violet eyes on his dark brown ones, she smiled sweetly at him. Well almost sweet; if there wasn’t a subtle, wicked and playful gleam in her eyes. Jeanne let her gloved hand slide slowly from his shoulder to just before his elbow, feeling a hint of the strength in his arm despite the many layers. Oh, nice.

"Perhaps my goal is to attract just the one?”

Vaguely, she heard the number come to an end. The orchestra conductor announced that they would be taking a break and the other dancers began to disperse around them. Well this was.. interesting.

Jeanne herself took a step away from Hakuba, just slightly out of reach. She gave him a teasing smile that was almost wistful.

“Though tonight seems not the night. The dance was lovely, and I thank you for your company. I mustn’t keep you any longer, but perhaps I could if we were to meet again.. Though I suppose one can only hope."

Such a shameless tease.  He liked that very much.

Hakuba smiled as he watched her step away, taking the hint at present, filing away all of the information he’d gathered for later.

"For both of our sake, I hope that we do meet again very soon, Miss Jeanne."

The detective bowed, sweeping and gentile, before straightening up. The smirk that he wore after was not unlike a hound who’d just discovered the trick the fox used to get into the hen house. All he had to do was bide his time. But did he really know something, or was he merely being coy?

Instead of delaying further, he nodded once, and moved to return to the outside ring of the room… path headed for the painting.

KID looked at Hakuba, noting the panting.  He frowned slightly in concern, not sure if it was because of fear from their flight or because he was hurt.  It was too dark to tell just then.

“I’m slightly insulted, Tantei-san.  But yes, I do have a plan.  We can’t afford to linger here.  Can you at least walk?"  He hadn’t removed his hand from Hakuba’s arm yet, needing to be certain of his companion’s capabilities before they could continue their escape.

"I can walk,” Hakuba assured him, moving even with Kaitou’s grasp on his arm. He limped, but he did so quickly, and after a few steps managed to smooth out his gait. His arm and his side hurt in a burning, dripping way, but the forefront of his attention was focused on his knees. They would recover, but for the moment left him with an awkward, stiff feeling.

But at least he’d caught his breath.

“What’s the plan? Move; I’ll keep up."

I think… both had said it was a good idea at some point. Though Hattori Heiji was more hoping you wouldn’t be involved and that it would be a last resort if nothing came up at the scene. The other personality actually reminded me to do it a couple times – even after we had investigated everything. I believe he was also the one to give me your phone number. I imagined he was more impatient to get rid of me than anything but… if that were the case, I don’t know how much sense it would make to direct me to another skillful detective…

“Perhaps he doesn’t think of me as ‘skillful,’” Hakuba suggested, shrugging. The expression on his face was dry and rather unamused, but after a huff, he got up from his chair and back to pacing. “I wouldn’t put it past him. But that doesn’t mean that he would do something so… dangerous, if he had something to hide. Is it a dare, perhaps? A sign of trust? Does the darker persona want our help, or–?”

The detective frowned, glancing back at Kyouko helplessly.

“My dear, I must confess that I’ve never understood Hattori Heiji under the best circumstances… and, that having been said, certainly don’t understand him any better now.”

Laughing was good. At least, that meant this wasn’t being taken so seriously that all the fun was ruined. Though he, were he asked about this, would also be confused. Going from avoidance and mockery to this was… drastic, to say the least. (Definitely would be interesting, if time travel were possible and if he were to tell his past self about this. The sheer disbelief would be hilarious.)

Again, that silver cross necklace that Hakuba had… Hakuba was so embarrassed and worried by it, for whatever reason. He gave a shrug and trailed his fingers along Hakuba’s sides. “It’s fine.“

No barbed comments, no mocking laugh. Just touch and patience. Hakuba pulled the cross free from his neck, chain hanging from his hand as he turned aside and tossed it onto the bed. Then, back to KID. He moved closer, hands once again reaching for KID’s hips and the bottom of his shirt, touch more eager, more confident.

"Sorry about that… no more interruptions.” Hakuba let out a hesitant breath, steeling himself, then leaned in to murmur against KID’s ear, pulling upward at the fabric. “J’ai envie de toi.”

Somehow, switching to French made it so much easier to think. He had no idea if KID spoke the language or not, but there were no lists of pros and cons, no entrenched drama, just that hunger.
