“Well, I am alive, as you can see but… if you don’t mind, I’d like it if you didn’t talk to anyone about it. I may be able to walk around without much harm, but if a certain group of people find out that I’m active again then… I really don’t want to think about what would happen.” He explained it calmly and seemed completely nonchalant about it, but there was still a hint of fear in his voice.

“And please, if you could…” he began again. “Don’t tell any of that to Ran. She worries enough as it is.“ He gave Hakuba a nervous smile and continued. “It’s not as though it’s a huge deal, but she’ll take it badly, you know?”

With the level of interest that Hakuba displayed, he wouldn’t be surprised if he had investigated him a little bit already. So there would be no point in flat out lying about his situation. However, he could graze over the truth. “Our secret, okay?“

image

Investigated a little? An understatement of depressing proportions. But Hakuba wasn’t going to mention that. Not even a peep.

The foreign detective walked with Kudou toward the cafe, pace a steady clip but not overly brisk. He nodded at the appropriate times during the other detective’s explanation, and blushed, faintly at each unintentionally significant moment.

Our secret? Keep it from my childhood friend?

Hakuba looked skyward, cheeks tinted from the heat of his shy embarrassment. What did Kudou mean by that? They’d only just met; why would he trust…?  Unless he really had been reading the letters. Perhaps he couldn’t contact Hakuba because he knew that the half-Brit would stop at nothing to help and he had wanted to spare him the danger?

"A-ahh.. Yes, of course. I would never betray your trust, Kudou-san…”

That little hint of fear in his voice. The uneasy smiles and polite hesitance. So casual, so calm. Everything Hakuba had expected of the great Kudou Shinichi.

…Puzzles, yes, but usually giving them, not receiving them. Though he had to admit it was fun when it was reversed. He wasn’t sure what any of Hakuba said meant, but it was all elegant. (Technically Hakuba could tell him heist plans or insult him and he wouldn’t have a clue. It sounded good, though.)

Hard to stop, indeed. KID, meanwhile, was working on removing Hakuba’s pants as well. He licked his lips. The room was getting warm, or was that the mix of their actions and the scotch? “Yes, my dear detective.“ KID nipped just a bit on Hakuba’s shoulder, barely pressing it with his teeth.

image

The nip drew an audible gasp from the detective, who gripped at KID’s hips for a moment as he shuddered reflexively. He pressed his head against his cheek, taking just a moment to catch his breath. "God…” he muttered, dragging his hands from KID’s hips down to his thighs, shifting back to stand up off of the bed- intending to take the thief’s pants with him. His own were undone, clinging loosely at his waist and slipping.

There was no question then as far as Hakuba was concerned. He wanted his thief, whether they were on even ground or not.

Yes, that sounds like a good idea. Now, if we’re done here…

*She stands up; unconsciously stretching her legs as she stares ahead absently for a moment.*

image

Thank you for your efforts in this case, Hakuba-san. I look forward to our next meeting.

“I as well, Kirigiri-san… Thank you for taking the time to come down here to discuss the report.”

Hakuba watched her, smile faint, then stepped to the door to let her out.

“Good luck, Detective."

Yes, you’d certainly do better than me at achieving the switch… But don’t get yourself killed, of course. It would be unfortunate…

image

So waiting… Yes, I suppose I’ll take that course of action. Perhaps I’ll find something important to do in that time…

*Which included procrastinating on looking for evidence of her lost memories. She didn’t know why she even considered doing it, since it was so low on her priorities anyways. Maybe she could try and investigate some split personality-related cases as well – if she felt daring, maybe she could speak with Fukawa… or Syo. Though she could already see the chances of getting anything out of that were very low anyways…*

“It would be unfortunate for…”  Hakuba repeated her words, blinking and surprised, but ended with shrug. “Ah, yes, it would be unfortunate indeed. I shall do my best not to die while facing our potentially wayward colleague."

This said, the detective checked his watch, considering.

"It’s likely a bit late for me to try to schedule a meeting with Hattori-san today. I will try again tomorrow and keep you updated on my progress. Shall we meet again in a few days to a week, unless something happens in the interim?"

Yes, getting anyone else involved would be unfavourable… To be honest, I was wary about getting you involved with this. I wasn’t sure how you’d take this idea, having never met you before, and it felt like I was the only one who could possibly believe it. I’m not entirely fond of working with other people on a case… But thankfully it worked out. You exceeded my expectations – which is a nice change…

image

Anyways, I’m not entirely sure on how to proceed from here… I’ve already seen this other personality and already tried to corner him with the conclusion you and I ended up later agreeing on… I feel I still don’t have the evidence to get him to admit to this – and it would be even worse to confront him when he’s actually Hattori Heiji, especially when we don’t exactly know what triggers the switch. Perhaps you’d have better luck but I, as much as it displeases me to say this, feel I can only wait until he’s ready to talk to me again… Unless you can think of a better course of action I can take?

“I understand completely,” Hakuba said first, regarding the issue of trust. “I, too, prefer to work alone for much the same reason. As for Hattori-san…” He tilted his head, smirking faintly. “If there’s anyone that can accidentally trigger him into a state of homicidal maniac, it’s me.”

He chuckled, though even he had to admit the joke was a bit in poor taste. Laughter abruptly ended, he cleared his throat with a small cough into a fist.

“Ahem. I’ll make arrangements to meet with him and see what I can find out. Waiting, therefore, does sound like it is the best option for you at this time."

Hakuba relaxing so easily after that sudden tense-up was a bit of a surprise, but he was just rolling with it at this point. (He was curious, yes, but that would be something to deal with later.) The enthusiasm and warmth was returned in kind with that kiss, KID moving his hand up to Hakuba’s neck again.

‘I don’t understand a thing you’re saying, Hakuba.“ He grinned widely, giving Hakuba a mischievous look. It sounded pretty and the tone was driving him up a wall.

"Mmm… I know,” Hakuba said, keeping his voice low and smooth. Their game thus far had made it easier for the detective to get into his role. “That’s rather the point. You like puzzles though, don’t you?”

What he’d said in French wasn’t a puzzle, especially not in the context of what they were doing. He slipped his fingers to the front of KID’s pants and pulled at the fabric, searching for a belt or button to undo while his eyes stayed on Kaito’s. The way he moved his hand was confident and practiced, not at all like when he’d failed at sleight of hand previously.

Inwardly, Hakuba struggled for control of his head. If they continued much further, it would be very, very hard for him to stop. But he didn’t want to stop in the first place, so it was the thoughts that had to be banished. Why was it so hard to stop thinking? He turned to french once again, murmuring in an almost breathless whisper up against KID’s cheek.

“J’ai besoin de toi.”

Unfortunately, I don’t believe I know any… Not at the moment, at least. Thinking about it, perhaps I did know something that could lead to a solution, in the past… But not anymore…

*She trails off a bit before refocusing.*

image

My classmate is… still around. Out there. Doing the things that they do. I’ve seen activity from both personalities – both around our academy and out in the public media. That’s… all I feel I can say about the matter. I’d rather you not get involved with someone like them, to be quite honest…

“Understandably. I imagine a situation as such would be complicated at best, with far too many variables involved to be certain that you’re not simply strolling into disaster."

Hakuba flipped the pages of the report again, then pulled out the pen from his suit jacket to mark a note in the margin.

”…That said, I recommend exercising extreme caution and discretion regarding this case. If Hattori Heiji is impaired in such a way and may not even be aware of this alternate self, I do not think it wise to… involve anyone else. For his safety and reputation, as well as our own.“

The foreign detective glanced at the footnotes again, thinking once more upon the sketch of the flower as it was described by Kyouko, reading over the notes thoughtfully. Was Hattori’s darker self delivering a pointed message to Kyouko through that knowledge? Such great lengths to convey meaning, though, when simple words might have done… Unless he was unable to give them overtly for whatever reason. A threat? Or perhaps a plea… He couldn’t be sure, and chose not to say anything on the subject.

"I’m not certain how you work on your own cases, Kirigiri-san, and of course I would not presume as much to tell you how to best perform in your position. I only prefer to keep the variables within manageable conditions – less cooks in the kitchen, more control, less chance of rats from the diffusion of responsibility."

Teasing from Hakuba? Him not giving all his information up front? Certainly a surprise. This would have to be done more often.

KID let his fingers play along Hakuba’s back, noting the smooth skin and slight patches that had a difference, somewhat rougher and nearly undetectable normally. (One needed to have very sensitive fingers and ears to crack safes, after all.) He would have to check that later more closely.

Were there cases of other phantom thieves doing this sort of thing with their detectives? He would have to check that later, also. He doubted he’d dig up too much; secrecy was downright important. Still, he tried touching what he could, softly and gently, aiming for the subtlety of a dove’s wings. Back, arms thighs, waist, crotch, hips…

The detective appreciated each touch and let KID do as he pleased, Although he tensed briefly at the touch to the scars on his back, he relaxed almost immediately after. Such a careful touch… There was no joy greater than to feel wanted like this. More often indeed; Hakuba didn’t dare yet hope that this – whatever this was – could become a regular occurrence.

Certain attentions brought quiet sounds from his lips, something between a hum and a purr that left him breathless  as he pulled back from KID’s throat. Withholding information seemed to have worked quite well for play… but then, Hakuba had always known that KID was a curious one. He looked to his face, kissing the thief again with no disguise for the warmth or passion he felt. Even though the red tint of Kaito’s eyes concerned him, nagged at him, he still thought they were as alluring as ever.

Kaito hadn’t reacted earlier in a way that indicated that he knew what the foreign phrase meant, so Hakuba made use of it again.  Tu as de très beaux yeux…”  He removed the rest of his shirt and dropped it aside, both hands moving next to sit at KID’s hips, fingers teasing by hooking just underneath the hem. “Tu me rends fou. Qu’est-ce que je ferais sans toi?”

…Hakuba-san. When looking for information about the multiple personalities… try looking at the case of a certain Genocider Syo. Their murders… The evidence seems to point to other personalities in that case as well. And perhaps, after this case is done, if you’re interested, remind me to tell you more about my personal experiences and why I could think of these theories… I admittedly only told you a small part, but unlike that part, the rest has no similarities to this case.

*It didn’t matter, did it? He could probably find information about the whole mutual killing game at Hope’s Peak if he looked hard enough. From there would probably be more curiosity and he might ask her himself. Of course, maybe it was easier to just talk about it now but, she wasn’t sure whether to trust him yet.*

The male detective pulled out the little black notebook from the inner pocket of his suit jacket, followed by a pen, and took note.

“I’ll do just that. Thank you for the information and recommendations, Kirigiri-san. I’m certain that I will be following up with you on the matter.”

Hakuba snapped the notebook closed and put it, and the pen, back in their place in his suitjacket. Then, pushing a smile, he looked the girl over once again.

“Might I ask if you.. know of any sort of ‘solutions’ for this kind of psychosis? Any known cures or resolutions that you’ve seen?” A brief pause. “What happened to your classmate in the end?"

“No, that’s fine. I’m getting kind of hungry anyway and I really don’t think that Ran would mind. We might see her there actually, so be prepared to get questioned,” he chuckled, only half joking. There was actually a very good possibility that she would be wondering why they were ‘hanging out’.

It was better to just go ahead and get going. The faster they got to the cafe, the faster they could continue to talk about everything but Conan.

“I wouldn’t mind that; it’s always interesting to be interrogated by those not in our field.”  Hakuba said this with a smile, curious as he watched Kudou, even as he began walking toward the cafe.

“How have things been for you lately? I have to admit that I was almost worried you’d been killed. There were so many rumors regarding your disappearance, and no one seemed to have concrete answers.”

He decided to leave specific details about his investigation unsaid at present, in favor of letting the other detective talk. After all, he’d often wondered what it would be like to just… sit and listen to such a brilliant detective, one-on-one.
