“If it is who I think it is, it is because they’re neck deep in murder and other horrific business. They trust nobody within law enforcement circles with this information, but they cannot confide in their bloodthirsty peers, so they decided to speak to me about it. I’m a fellow criminal and there are things only fellow criminals can understand.

"All I can say is that they are trapped and forced to follow through on orders, but they do not wish to. If they fail, those most dear to them will die." Kaito sighed. That was about as much as he could tell of Janus. This was going to end poorly. “They want me to stop them.”

Because detectives don’t understand the criminal mind at all. Hakuba steeled himself as he listened, deciding not to bring up that up, though it did even his expression to something decidedly more neutral. It was tempting to step in and demand to protect and help and… all manner of those things, but he realized, again, that there was quite the divide between their worlds, wasn’t there? So in the end he nodded.

“I suppose, then, it’s none of my business in that case, but… I do need to ask. Is there any way that I can be of assistance to you?"

hannah-shikari:

Oh my gosh, I’m so sor-! I apologise for the trouble, he’s usually so well-behaved,“ quickly standing up and stopping her tongue from spitting out the apologies in English, bowing down ninety degrees after setting the panting dog on his feet. She quickly crouched down and got to untying the make-shift leash from Akio’s collar, fingers shaking just the slightest from the leftover adrenaline. As jittery as she felt, it took only a few moments to get it off.

"I’ll purchase you a new one, I’m very sorry for ruining it,” she straightened it as best she could with her hands before handing it back, making a mental note of the material, design, and colour in between mentally translating her English sentences into Japanese.

The blonde detective smiled as he watched the girl fumble, not because he was cruel but because he thought it charming. “Oh, please don’t worry about that,” Hakuba replied in English, voice light and cheerful. “It was my idea to tie it to your dog in the first place, and I’m fine with being completely responsible for that decision."

He took the tie back and looked it over, brows knitting faintly in concerned amusement. It hadn’t been his best idea, clearly, but it could be worse. Hakuba shook it off, then put it in his pocket. As much as not wearing a tie made him uncomfortable, wearing a dirty one was not really desirable either. This accomplished, he held out his hand to her.

"I’m Saguru Hakuba, by the way… May I have your name?”

Well, it was a kendou retreat that’d been the pretense of his sudden departure. Truth of the matter was he’d hardly come into contact with his team, calling sick at the last moment. He was back now, and the tourney for the junior members of the team would be in three weeks’ time. Now was the time to review competition rules and techniques—senior and junior members alike would quickly take their stances, and within moments the room was filled with shouting and footstomping and all the possible variants of bamboo hitting bamboo, or armor. As was custom in such sessions; kendou was a naturally loud sort of martial art to begin with.

image

He’d mostly be at the sides, watching forms, correcting in strict silence. Not part of the norm, but that could be blamed on recovering sickness and the unfortunate fate that he’d stick with this walking cane for a good, long time. Dammit, Heiji should be in the reins, spearheading the practices, the show of strikes, the demonstrations—not him. The agent would curse his good luck when the time of a demonstration was called for, and he reluctantly stepped onto the mock-duel ring, bokken poised, stance tense. No pressure as the shouting whittled to murmurs, and students flocked to watch. No pressure at all.

Grace of the Shintou gods, spare him the shame of accidentally killing one of these pupils.

Ah, I’m just in time.

Perhaps against his better judgement, the foreign detective slipped into the room to watch the remainder of practice. The kendou retreat had foiled his previous plans to confront the Osakan, but that was no matter. He’d had enough to worry about in the meantime, and still so much research to be done. But after confirming time tables and proposed schedules, Hakuba had decided that taking an early morning train out and get the matter over and done with.

It seemed a good place, anyway. Relatively public to diffuse tension. Physical exertion to both wear Hattori out and get rid of excess aggression. Potentially putting him in a good mood to start if he did well. Oh, and an ice-breaking talking point. It would no doubt be an impressive match, and Hakuba was watching closely to learn all that he could. Surely, there would be plenty of genuine compliments to give by the time they had an opportunity to speak.

He took a place in the back in an attempt to be as discrete as possible, which was difficult considering that he looked even more out of place in Osaka than usual. But with polite nods and a serious, business-like composure, he wasn’t bothered much. It was time to observe and gather information.

hannah-shikari:

Startled at the sudden addition to her voice ringing through the neighbourhood, she had to pause and listen to reconfirm. Certainly, that was a clearly male someone calling the name of her dog, though that didn’t quite sound like her brother. Despite the sound of blood rushing through her ears, she could hear the sound of a barking dog. Hope fluttered in her heart and it was a split-second decision to turn back and follow the sound.

Without paying any disregard to her appearance, she jogged while following the source of the sound. Sweat trailing down her face and neck, hair mused up from all the running she did without properly tying it into place, make-up probably a bit more than smudged, feet sore and probably covered with more than just a few scratches, none of it all mattered in her mind.

Turning the corner, she couldn’t help the exclamation of her canine partner’s name the moment her eyes landed on the barking beagle.

Akio! Come here, boy!“ clapping her hands a few times did the trick, it seemed, as he tugged the make-shift leash (she couldn’t quite see that far, really) free before quickly sprinting over to her open arms. Of course, being covered by dog kisses came next, which was expected as she allowed the little pup to crawl himself all over her and plant as many kisses as he wanted on her face. She was just relieved to know that she had him back. ”You silly dog, you make me so worried about you. Don’t scare me like that again.

Pleased that his idea worked, Hakuba approached the pair with an easy smile, lifting a hand in greeting.

“Good evening! I’m guessing that this pup belongs to you, then?” The detective tilted his head, coming to a stop a few feet away. “If you don’t mind, I’d love to get my tie back.”

The tie was probably a little ragged by that point, having been dragged by the dog, but it had served its newly-appointed purpose well.

“You’re welcome,” he added quickly before tensing up at the mention of his own father. He hadn’t seen either of his parents in awhile actually. Not since that little stunt his mother pulled with the handcuffs.

“My dad is… well…” It was difficult to find the correct words. Ever since his parents had left he had been hounded by many fans and reporters into telling them about him. Where he was. What he was working on now. What was he drawing inspiration on. When he would be finished. He had gotten so used to giving vague responses but no one had asked him in such a long time. Perhaps he was just out of practice.

“He and my mother are in Europe right now, I think. She calls about once a week to check up on me and everything going on here. He’s just working on a new book. They take up a lot of his time and focus so I don’t really talk to him all that much.”

In fact, he hadn’t had a serious conversation with his father in years. The man was too busy writing his novels and Shinichi was too busy trying to be better than him. It was more of a rivalry than anything.

It seemed as though neither detective, despite being notoriously egotistical, really wanted to talk about himself. Odd.

Hakuba nodded as he listened, as he usually did. “Europe! Unfortunate that I’m not there to meet them.” He chuckled after that, the sound somewhere between a playful joke and a legitimate regret. He would have loved to meet them, but just because they were in Europe in no way meant that he would be in the same area, that they would have time/interest, or that he would even have the guts to approach them.

He moved on, continuing down the sidewalk with the other detective. “How’s your caseload, if you don’t mind my asking? I remember a little while ago that you were quite prolific.”

hannah-shikari:

Silently watching the strange male tie the thing around his neck onto his collar, the little pup obediently sitting down and waiting. Of course, the only thought going through his head was probably the idea of going out for a walk from the familiar gestures. He wouldn’t deny going out for a walk, walks were fun and the little pup liked fun. Or well, walks with his owner, at least. Oh well, there’s still no reason to deny a walk and the happy pup barked in what you could say was agreement, following the stranger out. You can imagine how different the atmosphere was between the dog and the owner.

That silly dog, running out at a time like this,“ somewhat grumbling, as unlady-like as it was. She was frustrated, tired, and worried. If it helped with getting rid of the excess energy from the adrenaline, it was probably already done even if she wasn’t conscious of it.

Despite how tired she felt, she pushed on. Just a few more blocks, then maybe she would go home if she still hadn’t found him. She could only hope that the little pup was uninjured.

Hakuba took the dog down the street and around the block, on the lookout for anyone who might be looking for a dog. On the way, he talked to the pup, conversing lightly about the weather, asking questions about what kind of toys he preferred, and all manner of pet-owner nonsense.

Two blocks further and the detective wondered if he was going about this all the wrong way.

"You know, Akio, I think we’re going to have to try a different tactic. Just bear with me, all right, love?"

He gripped the makeshift leash firmly in one hand, then lifted the other to his mouth to help carry the yelling he was about to do. "Aaaakio!” he called, loudly. “Aaakio! Where are you?”

Clearly, Akio was in his possession, but if there were anyone else out there looking, they might hear the familiar call and come running, right? It seemed a safe enough tactic, anyway, as long as it didn’t too badly upset the dog. Then again, beagles were known to bay quite loudly when they wanted, so if the dog wanted to help out, it’d be all the better.

Hate Date in Osaka

“Nah, I’ve got other things ta do.” Routine patrols, heading down to the station to see if any crimes needed solving, maybe hang with Kazuha…Those sorts of things. And Hakuba was only interested in the library, not sight-seeing, so it wasn’t like there was a need to keep him company.

“S’not a problem. Ya just remember what I said, yeah?” He took Hakuba’s hand, not in a crushing grip, but still firm, and shook it. It felt good to part on better circumstances, especially considering the last time they’d seen each other. “Ya take care now, hear?“

image

After shaking Heiji’s hand, Hakuba pulled back from the contact, and offered a genuine smile. There were still so many issues that they had between them, but somehow they’d managed to get through lunch with only one major mishap. Incredible.

The foreign detective nodded his thanks again before turning to head toward the train station as directed. "I’ll remember and, thank you, Hattori-san… I hope that you’ll do the same.”

“It’s not comfortable, sitting in this blood, but I wanna get this stuff straightened out before I head off to shower. The anticipation and worry building up like that as you wait for me to reappear clean? Bad.” And Hakuba fretted enough as it was.

“But that would be a wise idea, having my other side caged up.” He gave Hakuba a smirk. “I have a pacifist reputation for a reason. I’d rather not attack people, even as the king of beasts.

"Maybe you could train my lion self over time and I could be your oversized cat? Wonderful to have for keeping warm on chilly nights, I would imagine.” Jesting there, but making jokes would probably keep Hakuba reasonably calm.

“I’m… not actually a ticking time bomb, you know… I can handle stressful situations.” Just not when they were about Kudou. Or feelings. Or half a dozen other, important topics.

“For this, I’ll recommend that you wear a harness under your clothing… loose, so that it can accommodate the lion’s form. That would at least make it easier to recapture you, should you escape. Securing your house would be another step."

The detective looked thoughtful. ”…as for training, I’ve never actually owned a cat before. I’ve got experience training dogs… Horses I’ve worked with. My hawk, of course. But a lion? How do I know you wouldn’t just eat me up?“

Hakuba smiled at this… mostly because he’d managed to follow the KID lion earlier with great success in the not getting eaten department.

“Sounds like an idea.” KID headed back in. He crawled back onto the bed and sat crosslegged on it. “So, what do you wish to know? I can’t tell you everything, as I am not sure of most of it myself and there are some secrets that aren’t prudent to reveal, either of mine or other peoples’.“

image

"That’s fine, I’m used to you not giving me much-”  Hakuba said as he closed the balcony door. “-information, I mean… But what is this riddle you’re talking about? Murders and… whatever else you were saying. I understand that you can’t turn your back on the situation, and I definitely wouldn’t advise you to, but… Well, why are people expecting you to handle death threats and murder in the first place?”

The detective was legitimately concerned about this. KID was adrift in the safe harbor that was criminal- but not exactly… dangerous per se, or rather, certainly not violent… but getting involved in murders when one was not a detective or member of the force certainly was. Being on the wrong side of justice there was certain to lead to bad ends, even if KID remained completely innocent. It would be far too easy to be in the wrong place at the wrong time… and how would Hakuba protect KID from that? He was having enough trouble trying to figure out how to prove Hattori innocent, let alone an actual criminal like the phantom thief.

hannah-shikari:

The little pup’s head raised at the somewhat familiar tongue the male was using. He wasn’t stupid, having been trained since he was small. Warily sniffing at the offered hand, the small pup decided that maybe the stranger wouldn’t hurt him. Maybe he could take a break, he had been out for a while and a bit of a petting would be nice. Jumping at the chance, he placed his front paws on the male’s knees and leaned up to lick his face in happiness as his tail wagged back and forth. It seemed as if the dog have forgotten its little ‘mission’ as well as the idea of going home just for the moment.

“Akio! Akio!” of course, it wasn’t the same for his owner. Looking over the fence to see if she might spot the little troublemaker before she would have to return home. Part of her wondered just what is it that could have made the hyperactive dog run off like that, he was usually so well-behaved at home and it worried her immensely. Deciding that thinking too much about it would only cause unnecessary worry, she quickly shoved the train of thought into the back of her mind.

Honestly, where could you go?“ tongue switching into English out of habit, finding just the tiniest bit of comfort in using the more familiar language. Now if only she could find the little troublemaker, then all her worries would disappear.

Pets were freely given to the beagle, and Hakuba couldn’t begrudge the animal for sneaking a kiss or two. That tail wag was something he’d missed from his own dogs, who were unfortunately still in London. He rubbed his hands over the shoulders and neck of the dog, with spared scratches and rubbings for the ears, and took the collar and tag in his hands. It listed the dog’s name, Akio, but nothing else. Hm.

"Well, love, it looks like you’ve got an owner, but no phone number. I can’t take you inside or Mum will come up with some kind of a scheme to get you home, so…” The detective reached to the tie around his neck and loosened it, then pulled the silk fabric from around his collar.

“I don’t think we have any spare leads, so this will have to do. Try not to bite it too awfully much, please?”  He threaded the tie around the collar and tied a secure knot. He’d have used his belt, but it was likely that it wasn’t long enough. Gripping the other end of the tie, he looped it once around his wrist, then stood up straight. It was a short lead, but about regulation size for show, and would have to do.

“Come along, Akio… let’s take a little walk and see if we can’t find your master.” Hakuba once again clicked his tongue, then headed off to leave the grounds and get out onto the neighborhood sidewalk.
