International Adversaries || worldsgreatestthieves

It was frustrating to work so hard, for so long, to still have the majority of his work with the police be relegated to the third division – theft. Hakuba wanted to be with the first, as homicide cases always offered something far more interesting than the greed and shortsightedness of most thieves. But, no. He was good at solving cases involving theft of all sorts, and his antics chasing Kaitou Kid had left a permanent scar on his curriculum vitae – he’d been type cast, and no amount of resolved murders would ever let him get past it.

This was why the young detective was hesitant when one of his contacts sent him a lead on the one and only Lupin; a thief far more menacing and experienced than Kaitou Kid. Not because it was a challenge, but because it would cement his fate with absolute certainty should he succeed. Was any accolade worth separating himself from where his interests truly lay? He doubted it, but took the lead, anyway.

After all, what kind of detective would he be if he just chose to ignore an international criminal simply because he was a thief?

So he leaned against a column in the museum’s lobby, sipping coffee that had far too much sugar and cream to be healthy, and waited. How his contact had come across the information, he’d never know, but in theory, Lupin’s associates had been seen investigating an embezzlement coverup using imported artifacts, which meant that there was quite a bit of difficult-to-trace capital just waiting to be stolen.

Yet it was all speculation. Would Lupin be coming? And, if so, were the alleged artifacts even the target? Was he just wasting his time?

It was a very high possibility. But at least he had his coffee.

Oh but it’s true. Do you want to know how he begged for it? How much he said he wanted it? How he laid down and took all of it like an obedient pet? That he screamed and sobbed like a little brat because he bit off more than he could chew.

It wasn’t the first time that he’d heard of the incident… but while he originally dismissed it, further research proved far more troubling than he’d anticipated. Hakuba pulled out his mobile to send a text while he scrolled through the forums, brows furrowed. Dread and horror filled him slowly, ache like the gnawing cold of rising flood water.

[text] Just checking in. Hullo!

He’d seen Kaito just recently, hadn’t he? Or spoken to him, at the very least. Really, the detective had been so busy since returning from his trip to London that the past week and a half had been little more than a blur. Still, though, this sort of thing didn’t happen to Kaitou Kid. It just didn’t. …did they?

[text] Would you like to do something later?

Hakuba stretched, leaning back in his chair as the information sunk in. From the video clips that had been posted, it was a simple enough task to determine the approximate location of the scandal, but even with that, it was difficult to ascertain if any of it was legitimate or not. Sex tapes and snuff films were popular among a particular crowd, and many adopted celebrity or character personas to draw in a larger audience. It was a disgusting practice, but unfortunately one of the things that a detective had to deal with from time to time.

[text] Are you still asleep~?

As the seconds ticked by – which Hakuba verified via pocket watch – his anxiety deepened. To act or not? If it really was his Kuroba Kaito, he needed to be there immediately. If it wasn’t, did he risk revealing that he had a particular and personal interest in the thief’s wellbeing? While it was true that he hadn’t made the claim that they were enemies recently, and he was one of the forefront members of the Kaitou Kid task force, there was easily cause for concern that he could become emotionally compromised without due cause, betraying his secret. Both of their secrets.

[text] Kuroba, I really need to know that you’re all right

What to do? He’d need to proceed with caution, regardless. Sighing, he set to work drafting a reply to one of the forum threads.

leprofessorholmes posted:

Has anyone been able to confirm this yet? Or, more importantly, has anyone reported the incident to the authorities?

That was all that he really felt he could discuss openly on the matter; it all upset him too much. Kuroba or not, those who took photos, recorded video, or stared instead of immediately informing the police were nothing but cruel abusers, themselves. And, had it been staged, it was at the very least a matter of public indecency. How did this sort of thing happen? So many had died simply because the available people had chosen to be spectators instead of heroes. He knew that all too well. Paparazzi was such a dirty word.

…and why the personal messages? A trap, perhaps. After all, Hakuba had made many enemies in his profession, so it wasn’t completely unlikely. He picked up his phone again, this time attempting to call his classmate, but was met with voicemail. After a brief ‘please get back to me as soon as possible,’ he hung up and began dialing the station to see if there had been any reports made.

But before he could hit the ‘call’ button, another call came in.

“Hakuba Saguru speaking.”

“Hakuba. Where are you right now?”

“Conan-kun?” Hakuba frowned, surprised at the tone and aggressiveness with which the normally sweet boy addressed him. “I’m at my father’s estate in Ekoda. What can I do for you?”

“How fast can you get to Akihabara?”

The blond closed his eyes, taking in a breath while he calculated, again, the ETA for travel time. “Approximately twenty six minutes, though I may be able to shave it to seventeen and a half, dependant on traffic and parking. Why do you ask?” Though he already knew.

You’re the so-called expert on Kaitou Kid. I’m calling you in.”

That was all the confirmation that Hakuba needed, and was out the door and jogging down the hall in an instant.

“Understood. I’m on my way.”

kuroba-k reblogged your post and added:

It was amusing how Hakuba instantly took to a somehow defensive attitude, openly showing his scepticism. Kaito kept on smiling, neither hiding that he was expecting such a reply.

“Maybe I’m bored of the sometimes subtle and sometimes less subtle rivalry we’ve been having since you joined our class. You do behave a little aloof in general and it really annoys me to be accused as KID, but I actually think that there’s a nice guy behind all that behaviour. You keep informing me about that German illusionist as if he is dangerous and I should know what he does. I know you’re sending it because you think I’m KID and you’re trying to warn KID. But that proves it even more, you’re warning a criminal to watch out, you care for people.”

Agrin flashed across his face. “And yes, I’m well aware that I called KID a criminal. I know stealing is against the law. Doesn’t make him less cool though. He’s never hurt anyone and his magic is good.”

Were it not for the final sentiment in Kaito’s response, Hakuba might have found the entire exchange all too pleasant. This would have been suspicious, which would have given the poor detective far more work to do in order to maintain the conversation. Fortunately, with the additive about Kid, Hakuba relaxed. It was still Kuroba Kaito, and yes, he was still an ass.

But, for the moment, an amiable one.

“Well. It is true that I do care for people, and while you could make the claim that Kaitou Kid is something of an unusual commodity, I wouldn’t go as far as to say that he’s ‘cool.’ Granted, in my position, it’s a little difficult to avoid bias, but… that is just how it goes, I suppose.”

The blond shrugged his shoulders, attempting to convey a posture of casual nonchalance. He didn’t particularly enjoy being analyzed, let alone by one of his classmates, and especially not when quite so accurate.

“Regardless of all that, though… you wish for us to become friends, then?” It baffled him, but on the whole, he was… oddly pleased at the idea.

”What are you doing here?” The older detective would have, no doubt, preferred a proper greeting, but Conan was too curious for his own good.

“Ah, Conan-kun! It’s a pleasure to see you this afternoon. I’m actually looking for something…”  The foreign detective brought a hand to his chin, eyes narrowing as he scanned the area. “I don’t suppose that you’ve seen a dog running around this area, have you? Large, sandy-colored golden retriever?”

“If I had the opportunity to replace all your liquor with tea, I would do it in a HEARTBEAT.”

She’s sat down at a table in the library, teaset splayed out. No tigers in sight except for the one sleeping beside her in the Greek-styled sofa.

“Oh, come now, I’m not that bad, Miss Knox. Am I?” He sighed. “I know that I go overboard from time to time, but honestly, liquor will never be more important to me than tea.”

A Message I Really Think Needs to be Heard

dear-indies:

I want to take a minute to talk about a serious issue in the RPing community.  It’s an issue that many I don’t think even realize exists. Abusive online relationships. They do happen in the rping community and there are several signs to show when someone might be one you want to look out for. It is a personal issue close to my heart as I know several people who have dealt with it, myself included.

So to try to help those in the future and to keep people wary of those types of people I have made a list of warning signs that you may see in those people who often turn out to be abusive.

First thing is first, not all abuse is physical. So that doesn’t mean that abuse can’t happen in an online setting. There is also emotional abuse and it can be just as damaging to an individual. It is often a form of cyberbullying and it is something that I think needs to be addressed.

So I have compiled a list of warning signs, things that these people often do that you should look out for.

          1.      Telling you that you can only RP with them, or only with their character. Or generally telling you not to RP with someone.

This would be a sign of them being too possessive. Not willing to let you do what you want with your account. Generally RPing is supposed to be fun and about what you want. If you want to have only one of each character or only a few RP partners, that is up to you. But you should never let someone tell you who to RP with or who you can’t RP with. It is not up to them and don’t let them think it is.

          2.      Getting mad or upset with you for not answering them right away or getting upset that you are replying to others and not them.

It’s your character and your account. That is something you should always remember. If your character wants to focus on one or two people. That’s okay. Nobody should make you feel bad for not being able to reply to them at the time for any reason. Whether it is being busy with life or just not feeling up to replying to those threads. Most people will understand and usually don’t pressure you. It’s a bad sign if someone does.

          3.      Being told on a regular basis through messages and in public posts that nobody cares and that everyone in the end always leaves or something along those lines

It is often a sign of someone trying to guilt people into staying or doing things with them. Often times it doesn’t matter if that person receives lots of love or has a lot of threads. They will still make it known that they are feeling upset and that nobody cares. They want people to feel guilty if they think about leaving and it is usually a bad sign. Though some people may make a post like that every once in a while. If you are seeing it often or being constantly reminded personally then be cautious. It is a tactic to guilt people into staying.

          4.      Being threatened or told that if you leave or don’t/do something that they will delete, harm themselves, or something similar.

Another tactic to guilt you into staying. They want you to think that you leaving or doing something they don’t like will harm them, sometimes in physical ways and it is a way to manipulate you into doing what they want. Most of the time they are not being serious and it is a sign that they themselves need help.  Help that you will not be able to provide to them no matter how much you may want to.

          5.      Telling you that you are not any good or that you stopped being good after doing something they told you not to.

They want you to think that you are not good enough to find other RP partners. Bringing you down and making you feel miserable because they are is a tactic often used by these types of people. If you don’t think you are any good then you won’t go seeking other partners for fear that they will think that as well. This is an especially damaging tactic and can cause you to feel worthless and unwanted even after a person is gone.

          6.      Getting yelled at, being attacked, or them being mean for what appears to be no real reason, then a while later apologizing. This will likely happen over and over again.

Most of the time there might not be a real reason for it. Something as simple as you talking to someone they don’t like or you not sending them enough memes or replying. They end up being mean and outright yelling at times. Then they apologize and you might think that you should give them another chance, maybe they changed, and maybe it won’t happen again. But it usually does. Many times and if it continuously happens, there is a point where you need to ask yourself is it really worth it. Because in the end, it is not anything you have done wrong and you don’t need to let yourself be attacked just because they apologize after. One of the biggest signs of abuse.

          7.      Getting annoyed with you for RPing the way you do. (whether it is because you RP with a lot of people or only a few)

If they get mad at you for you RPing how you want to, it is usually a good sign that you should steer clear of them. People like this will try to give you the idea that you are wrong and that you shouldn’t do that. In the end you RP how you want and there is no wrong way to do it. Whether you want to stick to only a few threads or you want 200 and like plotting for more. It’s about what you like. And those that enjoy RPing with you, will be patient and stick with you no matter how you want to do it.

          8.      Being attacked or called names for RPing with other people, and/or attacking your RP partners for RPing with you.

If someone outright attacks you are starts calling you names simply because you RP with others. That is a clear sign that you should avoid that person. This is supposed to be fun and there is no need to be rude to you or others for how you RP. It is especially a red flag if they also attack your RP partners. That means they are being far too possessive and avoiding and blocking would probably be the best idea in that instance.

          9.      (An, its gone too far sign) They make you overly anxious every time you see them or feeling as if you are going to panic if they message you.

If it has gotten so bad that their very presence makes you a big ball of stress or have an anxiety attack, dropping them would be the best option. Nobody should make you feel stressed and anxious when on. If the idea of them messaging you, because you are afraid of what it might say, gives you extreme anxiety. That is the time to drop, block, and do not interact or look for them in any way. It is not okay for someone to cause this.

In general, RPing is supposed to be about fun, you enjoying RPing as your muse and doing what you like to do. It is never going to be okay for others to make you think you are doing it wrong. In the end, there is no wrong way to RP. So don’t let anyone make you think that there is. If someone doesn’t like the way you RP then it is best for them to find someone else. And you should never feel bad if you think you need to drop a RP partner because they are causing you anxiety or anything of the sort. If a RP partner is causing you stress, avoid them. Stress is bad enough in real life, there is no need for people to add to it in RP.

The people that do this, honestly, might not even realize they are being abusive to someone. Maybe they have had their own issues in life and it has molded them into the way they are, but in the end, they need help, but not from you. And there is no way you are going to be able to help them. In the end, they need to realize it themselves and seek help.

These kinds of situations can have long lasting effects on the person who has dealt with it, lingering anxiety or depression, being self-conscious about everything they do, feeling they are not good enough, wanting to avoid their RP account. This is not okay and for those who suffer these issues, you are not alone. Sometimes talking about it can help, whether with a fellow RP partner you trust, or seeking out a friend in real life. Don’t keep it to yourself, because it can make the feelings worse. And even if there are those abusive RP partners out there, there are also those that are very caring and will be willing to listen.

So keep the warning signs in mind and don’t let someone treat you like this. It’s about fun not about them.

Distance closing again, an ever tightening hold, honeyed words.

She was falling. Falling deeper into those eyes and in.. No, that sentence won’t be finished. It can’t. What was she doing? Getting herself caught? If she was, the thief was doing a mighty fine job of it. The detective was intoxicatingly close, he had a hold of her, and “darling”? Well, she won’t complain about that. No, wait, yes she would! Fervently. And loudly.

Yet somehow, the complaints seemed to get softer and someone’s heartbeats louder as the detective came even closer. Ah, the continuation of the kiss.. Again, the blonde’s eyelids drooped treacherously. Where was the usual detachment with which she conducted these “romances”?

Anyways, how much would a kiss hurt?

.. won’t be happening. A lot. Quite a lot. I am the fantastic, the marvelous, phantom thief Jeanne. It won’t do to let him steal ANYTHING from me, be it a kiss or my heart anymore time.

Once again, the determined vixen brought a finger to the ever nearing lips to halt the detective’s progress. Oh, it was almost a shame. Fortunately, Jeanne had enough denial in her to believe that.

Eyes wide with her trademark mischief, she smiled. Let’s bring this closer. Indeed, as in mocking of his attempt to return her kiss, she leaned even further in hold, her lips brushing the finger separating them from a kiss as she spoke.

“Careful, someone might think you fancy me a little too much.”

With practiced ease, the blonde gently slid his hand from her back with her other hand. And no, she did not miss its warmth. Really.

Moving back, she let the finger she had held to his lips to trail down his face and the fabric of his tie. As the thief did this, her eyes followed the progress of her finger. When she finally reached the end of the clothing article, Jeanne looked back at him and placed the taunting finger on her bottom lip.

image

“It’s been fun, love."

Hopefully not. Yes, hopefully. No, definitely is better. Definitely never again. Yes. Did I just say “love”? It.. it was definitely just in reply to his “darling”!

With that, she turned away and left to join a social circle with eligible young men. All the thief had to do now, certain the detective’s attention was on her, was to snare some unsuspecting young master with no honor. She’d knock him out, send him home in a taxi — the unconscious would wake up at home with a note saying she had stayed with him until a certain time but he’d not woken up (with the help of a sleeping pill) so she left. The time would cover the amount the heist needed. And with that, her alibi would be complete.

Taking a champagne from a passing waiter, she brought it up to her lips and pretended to listen to the conversation. Jeanne wouldn’t dare look back at the detective.

She was afraid she wouldn’t be able to look away this time.

Every movement, every word had been so carefully timed, so precisely executed, that Hakuba felt almost foolish as she left his side. She wasn’t a normal socialite; this was confirmed. She was a player, but not of the usual game; no, she played her part well, but she was too good at it.

Most women that he considered ‘conquests’ thought of themselves as femme fatales, despite having very little life experience beyond the marbled halls and limitless charge cards. There was a certain arrogance that they displayed that was almost charmingly naive, but Jeanne lacked this little nuance. As much as she tried to pull off the mysterious rich girl, that bit of chess playing set her apart. She was, in fact, the real deal, and very dangerous.

Which was likely why the young detective found himself standing in the moving crowd, staring after her, only just remembering to breathe. That kiss… those eyes… and those fingers trailing down his silk tie…

He managed a sigh before a hand clapped his shoulder, drawing his attention abruptly away from the stirring jealousy of seeing those others with the woman. Hakuba blinked once, then glanced at his employer, who made quick work of complimenting his style and grace, leading into the age-old question of – "Do you know who it is, yet?”

To this, Hakuba offered a slanted smile, head tilting just so. Confident, professional. He may have shown too much of himself to Jeanne in those moments of close musing, but he would not do the same with his client.

“I have a list, sir; not to worry. You’ve stated that you have non-uniformed officers mixed in, correct? As long as we continue to monitor the entrances and exits as we have, and keep an eye out, I’m certain we’ll be able to draw the culprit out long before the painting is in jeopardy.”

The man, though he wore a smile that ached with concern, nodded with some relief. “I’ll leave it to you, then, tantei-san…”

“Thank you, sir.”

“Oh, incidentally, who was that girl you were dancing with? You two make a stunning pair.”

Hakuba quirked a brow at that, smirking. “Ah, you think so? Unfortunately, I didn’t quite catch her name…” A lie, to be certain. But he didn’t need to know that. “Quite the fascinating woman, though. I may have to ask her out at this rate – after the event, of course.”

“Of course.” The man wasn’t convinced, but he could hardly expect anything else from a teenager. “Just make sure that the painting is safe.”

“Even if I have to attach myself to it, sir.”

“Excellent.”

Once he was gone, Hakuba set about patrolling again, back to work. Mostly looking for the mysterious woman, but also building profiles on the other guests though, really, none were nearly as interesting. This was going to be a very long night.

Lost Keys || Open

Hakuba was nearly unconscious by the time he got to his car. The world shifted around him, twisting the pavement beneath his feet. Still, somehow, he found the study metal frame of the rental car and pressed against it, breaths ragged. The young detective steadied himself, then reached into his pocket for the keys which… were not there. Frantic, he overturned each of his pockets, scattering their contents to the ground.

Cell phone, pocket watch, wallet, loose change, half-empty pack of cigarettes, lighter, another pocket watch, handkerchief, pen, detective notebook, and a mint tin found themselves scattered at his feet. Still no keys. Hakuba tried the handle of the car in desperation but, being locked, didn’t budge. He coughed, pulling back to try breaking the window in, which only left him with a sore elbow and a frustrated sigh.

The others were still after him. He had his sample; he needed to get out of there and the keys had to be recovered. The particular key ring that had been lost would grant access to not only the car, but also the house, his gym locker, filing cabinet drawers, bedroom, safety deposit box, and so on. This wouldn’t do…

But even as he leaned back against the car, he was having trouble thinking clearly. Something about the lack of sleep, the mysterious strain he’d tested, and the blood loss made it difficulty for him to stand much longer, too. His vision blurred, the world tilted sideways and Hakuba found himself face first against the ground. He wasn’t sure who’d turned out the stars, but everything was getting dark.

Taiyaki Search || grumpylucario

It had been a long and exhausting day, and the late afternoon sun was only barely beginning to move toward the horizon. Hakuba stretched as he made his way through the city, new tie in bag in one hand, book bag under his arm, and shifted each to his other arm to give himself a bit of reprieve. There was only one other thing left on his long to-do list before meeting his father for dinner, and that was to find vanilla custard taiyaki as a sort of personal reward for accomplishing so much on so little sleep.

Really, it was the only thing he could think of that would make the day a little less troublesome without taking up too much time.

So carry on he did. Most of the crowd had dissipated by now; hurried off toward home for dinner, cram school, homework, travel… which made wandering this part of Tokyo somewhat ideal for the young, foreign detective. Easier to take notice of all of the little shops and restaurants, to memorize street signs, and identify unmarked locations with reference to his gps. He knew that he’d get the hang of Japan one of these days, hopefully in time to come of use before he went back home to London…

Hold up. What was…?

Hakuba tilted his head at a glimpse of blue that he caught in the distance. Large, pointed ears. Tapered muzzle. Bipedal. Was that a…? No. Certainly not. Well, it might have been, but it was likely some kind of promotion. Did they have an Animate store in this part of the city? Odd. Very odd. But he couldn’t resist…

After all, Pokemon was one of his favorite games growing up.
