It was the sound of the door that drew Hakuba’s attention first – he normally kept his bedroom door locked, but it must have slipped his mind last night. That meant that he’d likely overslept and Baaya had come looking for him. Of course, it only took approximately 3.44~ seconds for the young british detective to realize that he had been very wrong in his assumptions.
It wasn’t his governess, it was the Toyama girl, and he hadn’t overslept. Nor had he, Hakuba realized with several degrees of mortification, managed to change from the previous evening’s formal wear into something suitable for sleep, but had passed out wearing nothing at all. Which was, of course, an unfortunately little detail that Kazuha now knew as well.
For a few seconds, all that Hakuba could do was stare right back at her.
Then, without taking his gaze from her face, he reached for the down comforter piled around him and pulled it over himself, very slowly, very deliberately.
“Ah, the… the ah, guest rooms are down the hall, Toyama-chan… Did you get lost?” He was still quite tired, and it came through in his voice though his mind was quite alert and more than a little embarrassed at the sudden turn of events.
