“Yes, detective?” He was curious. Hakuba gave him such a guilty look earlier and now he’d pulled away. There were several possibilities in his mind, including Hakuba thinking that this was a ploy of some kind, having issues with sexual orientation, or that he was worried about how this would affect their constant cat and mouse game now.

A subtle shift and KID was now a bit worried that Hakuba would put some cuffs on him. It wasn’t enough to make him move, though. He was enjoying this and Hakuba relaxing, even for a bit, was an interesting sight to behold. “If you wish to go to a more private location, I completely understand.”

How could Kaitou remain so calm? Hakuba swallowed at his anxiety and tilted his head at the thief, eyeing him with some skepticism. Yet, Kaitou appeared so genuine. For being a phantom thief and a stubborn liar, he was anything if not truly authentic. The detective realized that made very little sense, but somehow did. At least where it was important.

“…Perhaps relocating would, indeed, be for the best. I think I’d like that very much."

It was the safe answer to give for the time being. Of course, being alone in a private place also made for opportunities that could increase the stakes ten fold. Then again, if Kaitou were on the prowl, as it were, and interested in casual affairs, then why shouldn’t he indulge? Hadn’t that been his rule?

Regardless, moving seemed the fastest and easiest reprieve, even if it was only momentarily.

"Do you drink at all, Kaitou-san?"

“It is fine and I thank you for your concern, though you do not need to worry about me.” If Hakuba didn’t show any, then KID would’ve actually been worried.

KID was rather pleased by the turn of events after and how Hakuba had taken the reins a bit. As they kissed, he nibbled slowly at Hakuba’s lower lip. Just a bit, careful not to hurt him. He slid his hands, putting one on the back of Hakuba’s neck and the other on Hakuba’s back. Being on cloud nine for him was a rare occurrence, but this was one of those times.

It was dangerous, feeling like this. Hakuba kept his gaze on KID’s face, eyes half closed, dividing his attention between the physical and the emotional. He liked what KID was doing; the hands on his body, the teasing of his lip. He didn’t want it to stop, which is what worried him more than anything else. The detective knew that he was going to get attached, and he couldn’t have that. Couldn’t have Kaitou, or Kaito.

And yet, he wanted to. He knew that he did. There was a pull of desperation that brought the kiss deeper, open-mouthed and-

Hakuba pulled away, honey-colored eyes full of apprehension and hesitation. He tried to catch his breath.

“Kaitou-san…” The detective tried to express what the thesis of his heart was, but no words came. Not a single one.

How was KID so good at leaving him speechless?

“What do you mean by safe?” Okay, that guilty expression was worrying him. “If you wish to retire somewhere more private, I understand the sentiment, but I do not understand what you mean otherwise.”

There was also how KID was aware of his similarities to Lupin and how they ran much deeper than most people realized. So, yes, this was a foolhardy venture and KID knew it. He’d be damned, though, if he didn’t occasionally throw caution to the wind.

Hakuba looked at KID. Really looked at him. Biting his own lip, tilting his head ever so slightly, evaluating what he saw as he worked through the complicated mess of practical thought and feelings in his head. Kaitou, apparently, wasn’t worried, and didn’t seem to be aware of the inherent implications of the choice given to him. Which… perhaps meant that Hakuba was taking it far too seriously.

It was only a kiss. Nothing more.

Right?

The detective sighed and offered a sheepish, half-hearted smile. “My apologies… I.. just don’t want to see you get hurt, Kaitou-san. It appears that my mouth has run away with me yet again… when, indeed, I should just leave my lips in your care.”

He turned his head and, if not stopped, moved in to take the kiss for himself. Harmless flirting was something he’d done countless times before. Kisses were given shamelessly in the right atmosphere. What difference was it if, for once, he actually cared about the person he was giving the attention to?

“I may be a thief, but I have standards.” Technically, he did a lot of things that were questionable putting it mildly, but he was doing them less and less now. (One could argue either he was maturing or the gentleman act really was starting to wear off on him.)

“So, do you wish to or not?” He kept his grin, noting the blush. For once, as it wasn’t due to the gentleman act, he was pleased with it.

Hakuba hated questions like this. They left him vulnerable, and there was no way to win. Unless Kaitou really intended to kiss him if he said yes, which he found highly suspect, no matter what the detective said would lead to heartache. He debated the answer. So far, he’d not made his feels about Kuroba Kaito too obvious, or so he hoped, and whatever was said now put that in jeopardy.

He wanted to. He wanted Kaitou to. Kaitou or Kaito. It didn’t matter. But that would open or close doors, potentially permanently. What to do? What to do?!

“I… do,” he said softly, looking away. Guilt was in his expression. “Of course I do. But… is that… even safe for you?”

Why do you have to ask? Why can’t you just take it? Why make me decide?

phantom-thief-kid:

KID grinned widely. “I was considering kissing you, but I don’t wish to force myself upon you. Do you want that, detective?” He added a light purr at the title.

“K-kissing me?”

Hakuba’s blush deepened, ears tinting pink. That purr. It was almost overwhelming. He took a steadying breath, swallowing hard, and calmed himself. He wanted to ask the thief why. Why he would want to kiss him. Why now? Why here? All of these questions flooded his mind, as well as the warnings. Red flag after red flag.

And yet…

As he looked at Kaitou, he had to admit that he had often admired that face. Had so many times looked into his eyes and longed for… for something. He wasn’t sure what.

In an attempt to hide his embarrassment, the detective uttered a faint, amused chuckle.

“And here I thought you just took whatever you wanted.”

KID turned slightly and brought himself almost chest to chest with Hakuba. He whispered in Hakuba’s ear, “Why don’t I make it worth your while, Saguru?” Very, very tempting indeed.

Hakuba blinked.

Wait. What was going on? The use of his first name caught him off guard. He looked sideways at Kaitou, not moving, eyes widening as he considered the possibilities. It could be something sinister for all he knew. But Kid wouldn’t… and Kuroba certainly wouldn’t…

A faint blush crept onto the half-Brit’s cheeks. What if…?

“…What did you have in mind?” He asked, voice dropping to a whisper of his own.

“I imagine it would count, yes.” KID listened to the list. Famous places that reminded him of other places he’d been to? Interesting. And the slight slip-up with using his real name was noted. There would be hell to pay if that became a regular occurrence and the press got wind of it.

“…I suppose that is a problem here. ‘The nail that stands out gets hammered down’ and all that. But I suppose I simply do not care for that. After all, a thief, especially one who defies the conventions of thieving, is not one to talk of the merits of conforming to the norm.”

“But I will say this. Belonging is what you make of it.” KID licked his lips. Very tempting… He moved just a bit closer to Hakuba.

Kuroba had a point. Or, he supposed Kaitou KID did, at any rate. Hakuba let out a slow, hesitant sigh. Unaware of what the thief’s current predicament was, the detective turned to look at Kaitou again, offering the faintest of smiles.

“I… will try to keep that in mind, Kaitou KID-san. My apologies for being so downcast on such a lovely night.” The smile broadened. “And after all that trouble to make me climb up here, too.”

phantom-thief-kid:

“Well, I prefer up over there.” KID pointed to the northeast. “The gliding there is excellent many nights and there’s quite a lot of shady places during the day.”

He scratched the back of his head. Of course, now his debonair act starts breaking (even if just a bit) when he actually is interested in the person… “But what about you? Any favorite spots? I understand you’re not from around here and I’m not sure if you enjoy this place, but I am curious.”

“I’ve at least spent the culmination of six or seven years here, total over the span of my life… That ought to count for something by now, shouldn’t it?"

Hakuba thought about it, gaze moving over the city contemplatively, standing still, but anxious, next to the thief.

"Tokyo tower looks remarkably like the Eiffel tower…”

But that said nothing of Japan’s own merits. He tried harder.  He pointed, stiffly.

“Rainbow Bridge is almost like the London Tower bridge.”

…but Rainbow Bridge was far, far off in the distance, and still, Hakuba wasn’t really helping anything. He frowned, and lowered his hand.

“There are plenty of lovely places here, Kaito…u-san…” He stammered the words awkwardly. “I suppose, though, when I look out at everything… I’m just reminded of how I don’t belong… if I’m to be honest about it.”

phantom-thief-kid:

“…I apologize. I’ve never been and this was a bit on the fly.” KID maintained his pokerface, but internally facepalmed himself. That’s right, that’s where Hakuba was calling from during the Chat Noir case instead of joining in the hunt.

Ah… perhaps he’d been a little too cold.  Hakuba frowned, looking down at the city after that, chiding himself. Kaitou was trying. “No, no; no apologies necessary. It’s… nice, actually, taking in the sights with someone else for once."

The detective steeled himself, then looked back at the thief with a hesitant smile.

"I see your point… Thank you for bringing me here. Ah, what is your favorite part? Of the city, I mean."

“Haven’t you ever stopped to look at the city at night? Just stopping for a bit, instead of running about, and enjoying it?” KID was on the ledge, looking out to the city. “Nice, isn’t it?”

Hakuba raised a brow, watching the thief. The city at night was nothing new to him. He’d often brought himself to places like this in the dead of night to think, to be alone. But Kaitou wouldn’t know that, would he? The detective wet his lips with his tongue, then approached, gaze steady on KID instead.

“It’s something,” he said softly, noncommittally. Hakuba glanced briefly at the view when he was closer, then back at Kaitou. “But it’s not Paris.”
