Waiting Pleasantries

”It’s nice t’ know someone people are still willin’ t’ help a stranger out.” She was rather open and nosy herself, but was beginning to realize that not everyone liked to socialize and offer their help as willing as she was. It always made her wonder if she approached people too strongly, or if she made others uncomfortable.

Giving her head a small shake and brushing her hair behind her ear, she huddled up inside her coat before answering.

”T’ my hotel. Was takin’ in th’ sites and I lost track of time.” She leaned forward, a glint of curiosity in her eyes, “Do ya mind me bein’ nosy an’ askin’ ya what it’s like bein’ a detective?”

“It’s my pleasure,” Hakuba said at first in regards to the chivalry, inclining his head with smile widening just a touch more. “And I’d be glad to. Alas, most of my work is reading through case files and researching, but it’s interesting nonetheless. Cross-referencing reports and statements…”

The detective gave a sheepish laugh and rubbed the side of his neck, glancing down the road for the bus that still had a few minutes left to arrive. “Sorry, that probably sounds very boring, doesn’t it? There are chases and dramatic arrests from time to time, but it really is mostly paperwork. What do you do?”

”Yer a detective?” She brought her bare hands up to her face and blew into them hotly, the tips of her fingers curling into her palms. She didn’t hate the cold, but she didn’t appreciate it when it nipped at the parts of her that she had forgotten to cover.

”Madison Grey,” she cast a small smile over the tops of her hands, “It’s nice t’ meet’cha. M’sorry for approachin’ ya the way I did, but I ain’t used t’ th’ area.”

“Yes, I am… and really, it’s not a problem at all, Miss Grey.” Hakuba laughed, a sort of soft, rolling sound. “The bus schedules can be quite tricky to manage in a city like this; it’s easy to get turned around. I’m just pleased that I had the opportunity to help you in some way.”

Always trying to be the charmer, the tall blond quirked his smile so that it slanted crookedly on his face, showing just a little bit of teeth. “Do you mind if I get terribly nosy and ask where you’re headed? I have such a difficult time with my curiosity, being who I am and all."

”Phew, good.” Heaving a heavy sigh, Madison sat herself on the nearest bench and allowed herself a moment to breath. She had jogged the entire way in hopes that she hadn’t missed the bus, and was glad to find that she hadn’t.

Glancing back up, “Yer awfully accurate.”

At the comment, Hakuba laughed and shrugged, tucking the watch back into his pocket. “Well, I should hope so… I’m a detective; the gathering and assessment of accurate data is essential for doing what I do."

He slipped both hands into the pockets of his suit jacket, glancing to the stop marker, then looked back at the girl. "I’m… Saguru Hakuba, by the way. May I ask your name, miss?”

Aggravated and cold, she tugged the sleeve of the nearest person and grumbled behind her scarf. “Did I miss th’ bus…?”

Hakuba pulled out his pocket watch and checked the time, then verified it with the time on his wrist. “No; it’s still another seven minutes, thirty-four seconds, and…”  he paused, thinking better of mentioning the rest, and offered a smile. “Well, that’s all approximate."
