I believe the “Akira” he’s talking about with the pill refers back to the movie Akira where they used pills to become psychic

I think it’s more because Kaneda has a very iconic pill on the back of his jacket. Because he’s totally badass and awesome. 

Which, incidentally, is rad because I just happened to pick up the blueray of Akira yesterday. Finally. Now I have the triad – original VHS, DVD, AND the blueray with all three audio tracks *___*; <3

Kaneda was one of my very first anime crushes. Second only to Goku, I think.
