“Something amiss, Hakuba-kun?”
“No, no, sensei… things are fine. Thank you for your concern, however. It means a great deal to have your support.”

“I demand that you stop these wild accusations at once! My agent will have a melt down if he finds out that people have been calling me, Hakuba Saguru, a nerd!”
Subaru stored the enthusiasm Hakuba had for talking about KID in his mental notes. Close indeed. So his Robin was Batman in that regard…
“Oh? Perhaps he’ll visit some time and stay for stew. Though it’d be wise not to let Conan know, if he’s coming for a visit. After that whole mess with the train, I’d rather he didn’t go blackmailing anyone again anytime soon.”
“Ah, yes, I think it would be best to leave our dear little friend out of it where KID is involved. Darling little kohai-and-senpai though he is, he’s, ah, even more aggressive than Hattori is toward me, which is saying something of unsettling levels.”
A sigh.
“I wonder if he’d come over…”
“I demand that you stop these wild accusations at once! My agent will have a melt down if he finds out that people have been calling me, Hakuba Saguru, a nerd!”
“Doesn’t change that you would be considered a nerd, along with many of the other detectives running about. I’m uncertain of the phantom thief, though.”
“Kaitou-san? Of course he’s a nerd. The most excellent nerd. You’ve seen his uniform, yes? And how much dedication he puts into planning his heists~? The riddles and so on? It’s amazing and adorable. Wonderful.”
“Client, actually, but that’s neither here nor there at this point. Haibara-chan, this is a very serious problem. He has the rifle under my authorization, and it is for his own personal protection and nothing else. This shouldn’t even be an issue. In fact, Yamashita-chan’s tampering with his personal property is a much more disturbing crime than his possession of the weapon in question. Her divulging this sensitive information to you only exacerbates the problem further.
"Please let her know that she has nothing to worry about regarding the weapon, unless she chooses to endanger his life by spreading this sensitive information around. Frankly, I’m surprised and disappointed in her conduct as a detective. Information is our trade; the fact that she is dispersing it so freely without regard to the people that it effects is… grossly inappropriate at best."
“Didn’t anyone ever tell you that Conan Doyle hated the Sherlock Holmes series and thought it was badly written?”
“You always know just what to say."
A knock at the door woke him from his half-sleep. He got up and opened it to find Hakuba at the door. Grabbing the tub, he walked in and gestured for Hakuba to follow. Now to determine this matter for the moment at hand… He set it down in the kitchen and headed back to Hakuba.
“Open your mouth.” He was being gruff, but he wasn’t the most pleasant person when he just woke up. It took a bit for the niceties and politeness to work their way into his act.
“Pardon?” Hakuba asked, surprised at the blunt question, particularly after going through all of that effort on his errand. He frowned, wondering why in the world Subaru-san would even want- “Oh, to check my teeth?"
The detective did as was requested, revealing nothing more than a normal – but very clean, healthy, and well maintained! – set of human teeth. Although he still considered this rude, at least it didn’t seem to be anything underhanded.
"By all accounts,” he said nervously after a moment, “I feel fairly normal. Just tired. Which, really, is likewise normal. We should get the blood packs in the freezer, however. I would be ashamed if any spoiled from simple negligence.”
“Bye.” After Hakuba left, Shuichi flapped his wings and, albeit clumsily, made it from the table to the ground. Once there, he forced himself to concentrate. Once back to his human form, he got back into his clothing, wig, and glasses. He sat down at his spot, frowning.
Now was a waiting game and he was worried about if Hakuba would transform or not. That wasn’t his expectation, as that would mean that vampires would have to artificially keep their numbers low in spite of needing a meal by either killing their victims or killing each other off. Otherwise, they’d soon outpace the amount of humans in an area and start starving to death and killing off what few humans would then be left. Even then, he could be wrong. Pre-Dracula lore had the vampires kill their victims instead of spare them.
Regardless, Hakuba would be his responsibility, vampire or not, with the information Hakuba now knew.
Two hours, forty three minutes, twelve seconds, and several phone calls later, Hakuba returned to the Kudou estate with a large cooler. Once he was parked, he jogged to the trunk and gazed down at it with a certain sense of longing. If only these were wine coolers, he thought to himself, taking the handles on either side, and I were on my way to the beach…
With effort, he hefted the heavy tub from the car and balanced it awkwardly between his knee and the back bumper, shifting the weight to close the car afterward. Then it was a matter of getting it to the door – which he did – and getting it inside. He knocked on the side door, and waited.
“I see. He and you are close, then, it seems. That is not a matter that has relevance to the matter, but it is useful to know who is connected to who and to what degree. Just be mindful the police don’t hear, as KID is your quarry, correct?
"As for the matter of the crows, I wish to ask you just what you know. They are, alas, hard to pin down and they have been involved in the United States as well. I heard the FBI was about, investigating them, though there are a few who are merely here on vacation.” He needed to cover some of his bases. Still, he would need to give a bit of information to receive it, even if it meant giving another puzzle piece to Hakuba.
Hakuba had found out that information about Kudou because of what? Subaru would have to be a bit careful with this. “So you heard about the matter of his… condition? From whom, dare I ask? I understand he’s being sloppy as of late, but he’s still maintaining appearances for the most part.”
“My interactions with Edogawa-kun have been, rather unfortunately, seldom and brief. I recognized that he was different, certainly, but assumed that he was a brilliant child in need of someone to take him seriously… so I didn’t bother with interrogations which I deemed might seem patronizing."
Hakuba set his spoon down, instead turning to his drink. Being under lock down was awful; it left him inactive and waiting. And while he was typically a patient sort of person, there was so much that he needed to do outside of the Hakuba estate’s walls that it was particularly frustrating. But at least he had did have company.
"No, what filled me in was KID himself. Quarry though he may be, he was kind enough to provide me with a few pieces of information in order to protect myself as, I’m assuming, you would understand well.”
“Thank you and I appreciate the offer.” That would indeed be helpful.
“As I passed out because the vampire in question was near-starving, from what I could tell, I can only give you a maximum approximation. About four hours at most.”
Shuichi stretched, as much as he could for being a tiny bat and not wanting to fall on his face. He would change back soon, after Hakuba left. Showing up naked in front of his student would probably break his brain more than it already was broken. [And the age gap was really uncomfortable for him, all in all.]
“Four hours…” Hakuba tapped his chin with his index finger, then nodded and carefully moved to stand. Wobbly at best, it took him a moment or two to get his bearings, frown firmly fixed on his face. “Four hours, minus the fifteen to twenty minutes I’ve been sitting here, recovering… should be enough if I pull a few strings…”
The words trailed off in a mumble as the detective paced back and forth in front of the couch, steps slow, head clearing. Then he stopped, fist in hand, resolute and determined.
“Right then. I will return momentarily. Enjoy your little transformation. Try not to bite anyone else in the meantime, please.”
This said, he left straightway for the door to let himself out.
“…Hospital. May I ask why you’re asking me that?” He scratched an ear with a wing. If it was what he thought it was, then that could be useful. Wouldn’t have to go out attacking people, at least…
“I’d like to provide you with a ready supply in order to keep you from repeating your earlier faux pas. It could come in handy for myself, as well, depending…” He pulled the ice pack from his neck and set it aside, adjusting the collar of his dress shirt in an attempt to hide the bandage.
Said attempt was unsuccessful, so he turned his efforts to loosening his tie. "How long was it between your being bitten and having turned? All that I feel thus far is light-headed.“
