“A stupid pack of wolves is beyond. They would find a white horse like yourself wonderful prey if they get you in their sights. Thus it would be wise if you avoided following a silly old dog like me down that path. Even then, though, it would change your activities drastically.”

“I’m considerably intrigued but continue to feel concerned. I thought that, perhaps, I could be of use to you. Or that you might have some sage advice to help me on my path to be a champion of justice. Something about me being a danger to myself and others without the proper knowledge…”

“Which do you wish to work on first, Hakuba? I guarantee some of these will not be so easy, particularly if you travel down the rabbit’s hole.”

“Ah. you’re… Shuu-senpai Shuu-sensei Subaru-san, and, ah, so I…will defer to your judgement? Though, the expression that you’re wearing is filling me with some concern…”

Though Hakuba

For the one who’s a ‘white knight’

Dude, I can’t believe you’d throw me to the sharks adsfjhkgqewrpiuadf

“I wasn’t throwing you to the sharks! I wanted you to stay here with us where we can protect you! Safety in numbers! It’s always the one who goes off on their own that dies first!"

Subaru entered Hakuba’s number, then gave his own. “You may prefer that, but I am very secretive about my email. I prefer some measure of privacy.”

And he didn’t have an e-mail associated with this identity. Well, aside from one involving his college, but that was strictly for school. (That was something he needed to remedy, but it had slipped his mind, what with all the things going on recently.)

Hakuba hesitated after he put the number in, slowly lifting his gaze to look over at Okiya again. “Ah, of course… I completely understand.” He hit the save function on his phone, then slipped it back into his pocket, sheepish. This man was definitely not a typical engineer; he was far too cautious for that. Most people that he talked to willingly surrendered mountains of information as if they wanted to be taken advantage of. It always surprised him. But not this man.

The detective decided that he did, indeed, like Okiya Subaru. And that made him quite pleased.

“Thank you, once again… It’s been a pleasure, Okiya-san.”

Subaru nodded and pulled out his newly-found phone. Here was to hoping Masumi didn’t get herself involved in another case during teatime. Luckily not. (It seemed lately that she was feeling more unsteady in her deductions and he was worried about the reason why. Usually she was much sharper and more reliable than this.)

“Yes, we could.” And he sincerely hoped Hakuba would call him if he were in danger.

With how few contacts Hakuba actually had in Japan that weren’t just friends of his father, he just might. The detective read his own number out to Okiya while making an entry for his newfound friend.

“Ah, and could I have your email address, as well? I like to have as much information for my contacts as possible.”

“That sounds like a pleasant idea. Yes, I am interested.” Subaru, meanwhile, was contemplating just how to get this kid to avoid getting himself killed, because it was very likely he’d end up snooping around where he shouldn’t.

(If Hakuba were cautious, maybe he wouldn’t have to intervene, but Hakuba didn’t really sound like he was, given the way he was talking earlier. Subaru also made a note to look up the cases this one was involved in.)

Just because Hakuba outright said that you should ignore danger to have fun doesn’t make him irresponsible and reckless, does it? Oh, wait.

Hakuba nodded with enthusiasm at the willingness of his newly found tea companion. “Excellent! I really ought to head out now, however… I need to track down a book store before closing time. Ah- could we exchange mobile numbers, perhaps?”

The teenager pulled out his phone and brought up a list of contacts. At least he wasn’t one to just hand his phone over.
