Alice nodded. ” sure ” She tried to recall the questions the detective asked her and her answers. She didn’t want to incriminate herself any more by giving extra information.

” My name is Alice. I came to Japan to visit some relatives of mine.” So far she was telling the truth. ” I called the police yesterday as an anonymous informer. I told them about the location of six buried corpses.” She subconsciously told him an extra information. She didn’t inform them of the number of corpses in the previous statement. Her inner desire to help was taking over her subconscious. She didn’t seem to notice her tongue slip.

” They tracked me down and brought me for questioning. Apparently, the corpses were killed same way as some other cases they were working on. It seems to be work of a serial killer.” That was what she understood from the detective so far.

” As for my acquaintance I can’t real reveal their identity. anything else I could help you with?” It was almost midnight and she needed to get some sleep.

“Fair enough,” he said, looking up from the notebook with which he’d been taking down the occasional note. He would have to go over the file more in depth later, but so far, it seemed like an interesting case. Serial killers often were. “Any information that you can supply would be of great help, Miss Alice…

"So, tell me; was it your acquaintance that told you about the bodies, or did you discover them yourself? Precisely how did you come to find yourself in the position to call? Was there something about the bodies, their locations, or otherwise… that led you to believe that something was amiss, and that they weren’t simply poorly buried?"

musing-asylum:

She really wanted to help them catch the real murder. She doubted they would believe her if she told them about source of her information. The detective earlier kept asking her about the source of her information, but she couldn’t tell him that her source were a bunch of dead people.

Alice waited for the detective to come back. Two minutes later,He came back, but he wasn’t alone. He was accompanied by a teenage boy. He looked to be same age as her or maybe a little older.  Were detectives usually this young or he was just an exception? She had a feeling it was the latter.

She nodded at his greeting and hesitated before shaking his hand. She wasn’t in the mood to return the smile beside she wasn’t the most sociable person.

” No, thanks.” She responded with a sigh.Unlike the teenage boy her accent was quite different. It clearly gave away that she was an American.

She glanced at her previous interrogator with a frown. Couldn’t he just let her go? At first she denied being the mysterious informal but  unfortunately they had a very clear recording of her voice. She kept trying to dodge the questions until she decided to remain silent altogether.

”  I already said what I know. ” Her voice was tired. ”  my source wish to remain anonymous and I would like to keep that way.” Her source was already six feet under so it would be of no use to them.

She seemed too sure of herself for a murder suspect. She had extra information that she decided to keep hidden from the police. It would only serve to incriminate her.

She knew how long these corpses were buried. The victims were killed one month ago. She had a pretty solid alibi  so she didn’t feel nervous. One month ago, she was half way across the world and she doubted they could incriminate her with such an alibi. She will just have to wait until they discover the time of death of victims.

“Hm,” was all that Hakuba said at first before taking a seat on the other side of the desk. He looked to his accompanying officers, brows furrowing, then looked back at the girl in question. “Perhaps I could have a moment or two alone with her? Just to get things calmed a bit…”

The officers rolled their eyes, but what else could they do? The language barrier had everyone in tatters, and if anyone was able to get a motive out of a foreigner, it’d be that damned blond.

Hakuba waited for them to leave before turning his attention back to the girl and the paperwork in front of him. “Apologies for that, miss… Sometimes things just get lost in translation, and… anyway, if you could just humor me and start from the beginning, it’d be greatly appreciated, and then we can get you out of here and on your way. I understand you must be very frustrated and tired by now, but please believe that I am here to help you. All right?”

Alice was used to strange things happening in her life, but she never expected she would end up in being a suspect in a murder case.

It all stared when she sensed an ominous presence in an old temple.  She went to investigate it out of curiosity and found at least five violent ghosts. All of the ghost were murdered in same way. She decided to inform the police about the bodies. she never expect them to track her down and arrest her.

She sat in the interrogation room with the detective who arrested her. They have been asking her all sort of questions and she remained silence. Her Japanese was crappy but she was able to tell that the detective was getting frustrated with her.

Tell me the truth” The detective asked her in heavily accented English but she didn’t reply. There was no use telling him the truth. He wouldn’t believe her anyway. She was so sure they had nothing solid against her so she decided to wait for her release.  The detective mumbled something to his partner about calling for help of a high school detective or something. Did she hear that right ? or was her Japanese really that bad ?

Fortunately for the hapless girl, she was absolutely correct. Also fortunate was the fact that said teenager was in the station at that very moment. True, he was just dropping off reports on his way to rummage through the cold case files again to stave off post-exam boredom, but Hakuba found that those moments were invaluable for networking. There was always some sort of problem that could he shoved off on him by the senior officers, and the blond was happy to help.

…mostly because it let him show his superiority through action, proving that he belonged just as much as any of the rest of them, nepotism be damned. So he didn’t have his degree yet, let alone the full academy training. It was only a matter of time, and he had proved his salt again and again through the cases he’d solved. Still, there was no end of satisfaction when they crawled to him for help, and likewise no end of frustration when they forgot all about it moments later.

He wondered what the result would be for the particular case that he was approached with just as he was getting the filing cabinet open in the cold archive room.

“Come on, Hakuba-kun…” The officer pleaded with no disguise for his reluctance. “We need you to translate.”

There was a period of 4.332 seconds in which Hakuba bit his lip, considering the option to torture the policeman, but in the end he decided that it wasn’t worth it. Clearly, having to ask him had been torture enough. So the half-brit put on a polite smile and closed the filing drawer with a satisfying click. “Fine, fine, lead the way.”

Unfortunately, there wasn’t really time to read over the file that was thrust into his hands on the way, but Hakuba did his best to at least glance over it. At the door to the interrogation room, he adjusted his tie, nodded to the other officer, and stepped in with a much more charming grin, stepping over to the girl with an extended hand.

“Good afternoon,” the teenager said in English with a cheerful British accent. “My name is Detective Hakuba. Apologies for the confusion; I’d be happy to assist in getting your statements. Would you like some water or anything like that before I get started?”
