“Don’t even start, you ruddy thief.”
The thief had let himself in again, as expected. Though, not as expected, the detective wasn’t there. Hadn’t come back from the heist yet, maybe? Or possibly in another room… But while he was comfortable enough dropping into Hakuba’s room, not so keen on walking around the rest of the house after sneaking in…
…At least, not like this. And not after a heist, if the yawn was any indication of how well that would go.
Hmm… Kid could just leave a rose or note and leave. It’d be enough for the other to not worry, at least…
…Not that there was any need to rush home though. No one was waiting for him or anything.
He glanced out the window he’d come through, staring up at the moon for a moment before looking back down. Then, he moved over to sit along the seat beneath the window, taking off his shoes before turning to lean against the narrow bit of wall, drawing his cape around himself and crossing him arms, letting one of his legs stretch out while keeping the other bent slightly.
And he just stayed like that, watching the door a couple of times, but mostly just looking out past the glass next to him. The thief wasn’t even fully aware when his eyelids started to droop, until, eventually, his head fell to the side, the brim of his hat bending against the pane. He didn’t wake when the detective did come in.
“Th’ p’nguin flew… o’er t’ th’ next b’lding… Got ‘way… Stup’d ‘brella…” he muttered before moving to try and bury himself in the cranny more.
“Hello, Kaitou-san…”

So absorbed was Hakuba in his book that he did not notice the thief’s entrance until he had returned to the window bench, the white of his cape and top hat catching the light from the fire just right to pull him from the pages of A Christmas Carol. He blinked once, then again, head tilting as he slowly, carefully straightened up in the plush arm chair recliner, and stared at him.
“Kaitou-san…” he said, voice soft and tentative. “It’s a pleasure to see you tonight… on Christmas, of all days. Does this mean that I’ve made it off of your naughty-list~?”
…Well now he does…
“…I don’t exactly look into all the days that people give out sweets, I just hear about them and go along with it. I doubt you ever question why people give out cookies or cake and claim it’s just because it’s their respective days. How was I supposed to know this was any different? Or more important?
But, yeah, I get the point now. Thanks. I’ll remember that for next time.”
"On the contrary… with how many attempts there’ve been on my life, I always question. But then again, I understand that I’m more paranoid than most. At any rate, I doubt that anyone took you too seriously with how giddy you were… they were likely just pleased that you took them and enjoyed them. Particularly as you didn’t give them up in the face of Koizumi-san…"
"This next year will be better, I’m certain of it.”
“…They’re classmates. And I know every one of them by name. Why should I worry about getting chocolate from them? I wasn’t the only one, so I don’t see any real reason to get suspicious of getting something sweet.”
“I’d have thought that everyone behaving very much out of the ordinary would have struck you as odd, Kuroba-kun… after all, this was something that was clearly pre-planned that you weren’t involved in. Does this happen often to you? You seem the sort to need to be abreast of every new development and the center of attention for every event.
"Regardless, I’ll end your suffering now. February 14th, the day that the girls (and a handful of boys) brought chocolate is known as Valentine’s Day. In the Western world, this is the day when people of all ages celebrate their relationships with others… It’s typically reserved for romantic and/or intimate love, but many choose to likewise show appreciation for their friends and family members, as well. In many ways, it’s similar to how the Japanese celebrate Christmas – as a holiday for couples and the hopeful lovers.”
“But while anyone can give a Valentine gift (flowers, cards, chocolates, stuffed animals, etc) to anyone else in the west, the custom in Japan (and some other Asian countries) is for the girls to give tribute to the person that they like in hopes that their love will be accepted and returned on White Day – March 14th. This is usually in the form of a gift of some sort… white chocolate, cookies, and marshmallows are popular choices among students, jewelry, white lingerie, and so on for adults.
"So you see, for the romantic, Valentine’s Day is the question – will you please be mine? – and White Day is the answer – yes or no respectively, with appropriate gift or horribly crushing silence.
"That said, like Valentine’s Day elsewhere, it is not strictly for lovers, particularly in modern day. "Courtesy chocolate” can be given to anyone, and is common among friends, colleagues, associates, etcetera.“
"You’ve now been informed about Valentine’s Day, Kuroba-kun, and the subsequent implications therein. I hope that you take it to heart; it’s not something that should be treated so lightly. After all, it’s likely that many of the chocolates that you were given were hand-made by those lovely young ladies, and if they never received anything from you on White Day, well… I’m certain you can guess what that means.”
Hakuba keeps wondering why Kaito never bothered to gOOGLE it. LOL. “It would take you thirty seconds to learn everything if you’d just LOOK IT UP!”(If people want to give him chocolate one day at random, he’s not going to question it. So, I guess more than wondering about what it is, I should say no one’s ever bothered to mention it being a special day to begin with. They just randomly hand him chocolate, and he is very much happy with that. I feel bad for them if they expect White Day gifts, though…
…Though, I somehow think everyone is very well aware Kaito is just a happy idiot about it…
But look at that face~ I wouldn’t blame them if they were fine with just making him all happy like that.)
“I don’t think that I’ll ever understand him…”
Kid glanced at the detective after being given permission to look again before actually turning to face him, giving the other a smirk of his own as he got to his feet briefly and stretched. Then a hand fell to the brim of the top hat as he considered it.
“Actually, it’s not too bad, but yeah, not the best for a ‘laying down’ type of rest. And you know how much I like playing with assumptions, tantei-san~”
A swift pull of the cape and the thief was obscured for a brief moment, falling away to show him in a far less showy black outfit. Just simple elastic waist pants, long sleeved shirt, and a black cap, monocle still glinting under the brim. Some folding, and a quick flick of the wrist and the cape was gone as well, just leaving him a shadow of the walking target he normally was.
He lightly hopped up to sit next to Hakuba, leaning back slightly and stretching his legs for a moment as he relaxed, then loosely crossed his arms over his chest and tilted his head, satisfied grin playing on his lips. No one ever said he had to keep the full uniform on. So long as his face was mostly obscured in some way, this was fine.
“It’s almost as if you’re a gentleman ninja now, Kaitou-san…” He chuckled, shaking his head, and stretched to get a little more comfortable under the sheets and goose down comforter. “I’ll never quite understand how you change so quickly, or where you keep your superfluous disguises, but… I suppose that doesn’t really matter.”
Hakuba yawned, and lifted a hand to cover it, stretching again with the tiniest moan before rolling onto his side, getting nice and comfortable.
“…still can’t believe that you agreed to stay, either…"
(Kai and Spider both agree they were… interesting. XD )
I’ll give you hugs for the embarrassment. And water and aspirin for the hangover.
“Well, if it was really that entertaining for you all, perhaps I’ll have to go on another pub crawl for Christmas or New Years, hm? God, it would be such a mistake…”
“I know, I know. It was reckless, you would have probably been fine, I might have wasted your efforts at trying to allow me to escape by coming back. He can’t actually kill you, unless he just wants to ask for trouble… But damn it, tantei-san, you shouldn’t just casually push me off the building to make sure I leave, even if I do have the glider… Even if you didn’t want me to have to deal with Spider…”
Kid paused his worried pacing to glance over at the detective, whose eyes were closed and breathing was even. He was fine. They both were fine. The thief hadn’t known if imitating Nakamori’s voice to pretend the task force was coming would work, but it seemed it had. The assassin hadn’t been there when he stepped out… but Hakuba sat slumped against the wall, immediately drawing the thief’s attention as he rushed over to check for signs that the other was okay. No bleeding and still had a heartbeat, thank god. He’d waited a few moments before taking the radio out of the teen’s pocket and making an actual announcement, in his own voice, that the detective had met with some trouble on the roof and might need help.
And then, instead of rushing off, he’d waited, walking back and forth, muttering to himself. He wanted to be sure they actually did come.
Kid stared a minute before walking back to the teen and kneeling down. They should get here soon, so he might as well actually get out of sight now…
"…Sorry I came back after that…” A pause and he leaned in to give a gentle hug to the detective, voice falling into a whisper, “But I loved you too much.”
