Goodbye

“God damn you can’t even answer your phone, Hattori?!" Hakuba’s voice, clearly frustrated, strained. “What would you like me to do now?

Silence on the line, aside from the detective’s breathing, before he was answered with a gruff and muffled male voice.

“Proceed.”

"Ha… certainly.” Bitter, hard. Angry. “Hattori, I’m to tell you to pass a message along to my dear daddy and the rest of the boys on the for- ah, fine, FINE, stop-”

Muffled clatter. A ragged, broken gasp from the detective.

Silence. One… two…. three…

“Hattori.” Quieter, calmer. Broken. “The Superintendent General needs to know that if he wants to see me again that he’s to wait next to Hachikō…” He coughed, then released a shuddering breath. And then, in English, quickly. “Don’t let him leave the house. They’re going to intercept at- ahgh!”

The definitive sound of gunfire. Four shots in total. More muffled, shifting sounds. The thud of something heavy hitting the ground.

"Tomorrow evening…” The previous male voice said into the phone. “Seven o’clock sharp. If he wants the body in one piece.”

Click.

Goodbye

“Ah, Takagi-keiji, I just wanted to let you know that the situation is now under control… We were able to disarm the bomb successfully and the gunmen have been subdued. Although we’re still hoping for some backup to deal with the ‘pickup’ for down town, we’ve changed the status of the hostage situation from ‘at will’ to ‘stand down.’ This means that you can tell my father – if you’re still at the office – that yes, I will be there for lunch. Thanks, Takagi-keiji… we’ll get coffee again soon, ne?"

(It’s too soon to say) Goodbye… Saguru-kun.

“Emi… I don’t have a lot of time. Find Kid. Tell him ‘Ballarat’ is the answer. Tell him that-” the strangled sound of a choking, muffled sob. “-that I love him. Don’t tell him that I love you. That I wanted to grow old with you. God, I… Emi… I… I’m so, so sorry. I’m not getting through this one. Tell Kid the box in… the safe is for you. And only you. I love you. I love you. I have to go. I can’t let them trace this.”

Click.

“goodbye” (Dont go…)

“Camie-chan, I need you to listen very carefully… there’s something important that must be done and I can’t…  Well, I…”

A frustrated sigh. “I need you to get a code to Kaitou Kid. Do it however you have to, but make sure that he’s the only one who hears it. The code is ‘Ballarat’ – please do it as soon as you can, don’t tell anyone else. This is so, so important. Please. Thank you… thank you, if I get the chance to make it up to you I will, but if I don’t, I- ah.”

There was another pause, this one nothing but silence, and then a whispered, “They’re here…”  before the voice message ends.

Goodbye

“This is an apology… Kaito-kun, for all of the times that I made you doubt, made you wonder. When I told you that I… well, I know you don’t believe me. I blame myself for that. For pushing too hard, for not pushing hard enough. You won’t hear from me again. I won’t interrupt your happiness. I’m…"A pause, hesitating, then a sigh and a halfhearted laugh. "I’m glad for you, actually. Really glad. I just can’t do it anymore. Even now, I can’t make myself say the words that I should have so long ago. I’m sorry. Goodbye.”
