It was far easier to play the adorable, helpful child around those he hadn’t spent a lot of time around, or those that didn’t know his true identity. While Hakuba seemed capable on his own, he hoped that he wouldn’t become another that figured his secret.

”What’s the dog’s name, and how’d it get out?” Conan wanted to asked what it was the owner wanted from the canine’s collar, but would wiggle his way into that question later.

“Her name is Mikki, and the current theory is that she somehow got out of my client’s car while it was parked at an office building, just two miles from here…”  Hakuba glanced in the direction of the building – north east – then back down to Conan with a sort of helpless frown.

“They think she just got out through the window, but I wonder if, perhaps, someone broke in to let her out. There were little scratches on the door next to the window, and it’s so terribly easy to break into those older cars. Here, I’ll show you a photo."

The taller detective pulled out his phone to scroll through the evidence that he’d captured earlier that morning, and held it out to him. Sure enough, the black car had tiny scratches in the paint, indicative of a metal object and several false starts to get between the door and the pane of glass.

"I have to admit that I’m more than a little upset at my client for leaving their dog in their parked car, but I suppose that can’t be helped now…"

”Eheh…” Damn, he had a point. Conan wasn’t going to suddenly change his opinion on that alone, lest he encounter a true phantom, but he knew he was being a smidge close-minded about the whole thing. Still, he couldn’t help but to snicker————

”I’d love to see Megure’s face if a ghost became a murderer.”

Hakuba couldn’t really blame the young detective for being skeptical, but all the same he felt somehow triumphant at the lack of a rebuttal. Deciding it was enough of a victory, he smirked, nodding in agreement at the sentiment.

“God, wouldn’t that be quite the thing? How would we even process the paperwork for that? Nevermind the trial and punishment… Vastly more complicated than it’s worth, really.” He laughed. “We’d have to get an entirely different division involved."

”Oi, not you, too!” Everyone’s lost their damn minds.

“I’m just saying that while there isn’t enough evidence to prove their existence, there also isn’t enough to disprove it, either. Science is constantly making new discoveries, changing the rules on this, that, and the other thing… things that were thought to be fact becoming untrue when new details come to light, things that were thought to be false turning out to legitimately be the case…

"As a detective, we must always be seeking the truth with an open mind, otherwise our deductions will be biased. Surely, you haven’t forgotten that lesson from Holmes, have you~?

"Sometimes, Occam’s Razor really is the answer.”

“Hmm… Munneko-chan originally studied animation at university, but switched to double majoring in English (emphasis in creative writing) and Illustration a year into the program. She suddenly dropped out with only one and a half years left due to illness, however. I know she intends to go back and finish eventually…”

”I don’t know about a water source, but there’s an alley where a bunch of strays gather.” He wasn’t about to admit that he had sneaked into the alley more than once just to pet the homeless hounds — he couldn’t help it, he was just as much of a sucker for dogs as Hakuba was.

Skipping back a few steps, he tugged at the taller detective’s sleeve.

”Come on. It’s this way. If it’s not there, we can look at the park.”

Oh, god, Edogawa-kun was cute.

Hakuba’s smile only broadened as he nodded, allowing the boy to lead him wherever he wanted to take him. “That sounds like the perfect place to begin looking, yes… brilliant idea, Conan-kun! It’s no wonder that you’re so well-spoken of. I imagine we’ll have this mystery solved in no time at all.”

To say that this was one of the foreign detective’s dreams would be an understatement; he could think of nothing better than to spend the afternoon with such a bright and helpful young detective.

”A dog?” He didn’t recall seeing one — not one of that description, anyway. Had he seen one without an owner, he would have made it a point to remember. “No, not around here. Is it yours?”

He wouldn’t have pegged Hakuba as the dog type, but — then again — he hardly knew anything about him.

“Oh, I wish! I love goldies, though the dogs I have are both back in London.” Hakuba smirked, thinking fondly back to the aforementioned canines, but then shook his head. “No, this is a client’s dog – it has something attached to its collar that they’d like back. Unfortunate that you haven’t seen her, though…”

He glanced up and down the street, then back, smile fading. “Any idea where a dog-sized water source might be around here?”
