Kita started to think of all the things that she liked to do for fun. “Well I enjoy reading, shopping, texting and talking on my phone with my friends, and working on cases.” Kita explained and blushed slightly.

“You must think I’m really weird that someone like me would be doing girly activities.” Kita said, embarrassed about telling Hakuba her hobbies.

“Not at all; those activities seem perfectly fitting for a female high school student.” Though he smiled, Hakuba couldn’t resist the faint crease of his brow.

“You’re not embarrassed about showing feminine characteristics, are you? I think it’s a fine quality, and something that we could use more of our in our field.”

Kita looked down on the ground. She was not a violent person. She only got angry if anybody was ever mean to her or the people around her.

“I don’t want to hurt Kid. I only took martial arts to protect myself from people like kidnappers and perverts. Anyway, Hakuba-kun, what do you like to do for fun when you are not working on cases?” Kita said as she placed her book in her lap.

Hakuba tilted his head just so, regarding Kita in surprise for a moment. Were kidnappers and perverts so rampant a problem in Japan? He supposed that he hadn’t read the census or statistics lately, though even that was hardly accurate. Still, something he ought to think about.

The change in topic was a welcome distraction from yet more work, and the male detective chuckled, raising a curious brow.

“Why, Yamashita-chan, are you interrogating me? I suppose it’s been a while since I’ve done an interview, however, so I will oblige.” Closing the book on his own lap, he straightened up and offered a smile.

“When not working on cases, or attending classes and dealing with the subsequent study, I enjoy reading, playing tennis, and…” he paused, considering. Lately, most of his waking hours had been devoted to case work. What did he enjoy doing? He thought back to the more recent magazine articles that were rife with just these questions, and pulled another hobby from the pre-approved list. “…hunting. And yourself?”

Kita clenched her fist at the mention of Kid’s name. “Well, that thief tried to flirt his way out of escape with me, but that don’t work on me. If he tries to kiss me, he will get a tae kwon do kick to the head!

Kita sighed to calm herself down. "When I woke up, he left a note in my pocket with a rose attached to it. I have the note to remind me of my mistake and the rose is in a vase at my home.” Then she blushed a bit.

“It’s not that I like him, I can’t let a good flower go to waste. Do you know any martial arts, Hakuba-kun?” Kita asked after the blush disappeared from her face and she quickly changed the subject.

The detective blinked once or twice at the novice girl’s enthusiasm, faint smile twitching at the corner of his mouth. Just how many detectives did Kaitou KID have wrapped around his finger, anyway? Hakuba shook his head, turning the page with the new topic.

“Alas, I do not. I’ve considered taking some kind of class to remedy that, but have not yet had the time.” Hakuba glanced over at her after that, lifting a brow. “I do hope that if you don’t really intend to enact violence on that phantom thief, Yamashita-chan… Not only are his crimes not the type to merit such punishment, but that sort of behavior is rather unbecoming of a young lady like yourself.”

Kita smiled when Hakuba asked her. “Yes. I have only solved about 20 cases so far. And you want to capture Kaito Kid? I want to capture him too, but he is always escaping.” Kita said with a sigh.

She then remembered the last time she faced Kid. “During the last heist, I was really close to catching Kid. I grabbed his cape when I chased him and he tried flirting with me to let go. When I refused, that thief sprayed sleeping gas in my face. When I woke up, Nakamori-keibu yelled at me for letting him get away.” Kita complained as she talked about her encounter with Kid. She looked at Hakuba. “Have you ever had an encounter with that thief?” Kita asked the half-brit, hoping if he had the same exact encounter with Kid.

Hakuba had to look away at the question, wincing smile on his face. “Oh, I’ve had several encounters with Kaitou Kid, yes. God, I’ve been thwarted by him on several occasions. He’s always got another trick up his sleeve, another way to wriggle out of your grasp.”

The detective sighed, then, expression almost fond as he turned to the book in his hands. It was a Doyle book, of all things. Chuckling, he opened it up to a random page and glanced at its contents.

“Don’t take it too hard, or too personally, He’s outfoxed even the best of our colleagues. I think that’s rather the point. But don’t give in; he does love a good chase."

Kita smiled once he handed her the novel. “Thank you, Hakuba-kun. I am a big mystery fan. Nancy Drew has been an inspiration for me to be a detective.” the high school girl explained.

She sat down in a chair in the mystery section and offered a chair to Hakuba. “So your name is Hakuba Saguru. I heard about you from the newspapers when you solve a case in Japan. What are you doing back in Japan even though you live in England?” Kita asked the half-brit.

The offer was taken, and Hakuba took the suggested seat – but only after selecting a random book on the shelf for himself. Once he was settled, one leg crossed over the other – ankle on his knee, he glanced back at the girl, nodding. Hm. So she had heard of him… and was a detective? Interesting.

“Ah, always a pleasure to meet someone who knows of my work. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. To ah, answer your question…” Hakuba paused for a moment, thoughtfully. “I’ve had several interesting cases that caught my interest – among them Kaitou KID – and since my father lives here…” He shrugged. “I was long overdue spending some time with him. So, ah, are you a detective then?”

The girl glared at being called short, even though she was only 6 inches shorter than him.

“I am trying to reach for the Nancy Drew novel. My name is Kita Yamashita. And you are?” Kita asked after she introduced herself to the young man.

“Hakuba Saguru,” the half-brit replied, smile turning to a faint wince at the glare. “Interesting choice, Nancy Drew. I must confess that it’s been a number of years since I’ve read any of them."

Hakuba turned his attention back to the shelf and plucked the requested novel from the shelf. He turned it over in his hand as he lowered it, glancing at the title, then offered it to her.

"Mystery fan?”

It was a sunny day at the public library in Tokyo. A high school girl with black hair was in the mystery section. She was trying to get a book that she wanted, but it was too high for her to reach. She tried standing on her toes to get the book, but that failed.

“Damn it! Why must the good books always be on the high shelf?”

“Perhaps so that those who are on the shorter end of the spectrum…” The voice came from behind her, belonging to a young man in suit and tie. He reached up, his own height allowing him reasonably easy reach to to the entire shelf. “..have a chance to meet those on the taller end? Hah. Which book are you looking for, miss…?”

He turned toward her with a smile, waiting for a name and further instruction.
