“August 29th. And, about the tea, I’ll bring over a nice selection of English teas, all right?”

“Are you feeling ok, Hakuba-kun?” the female detective asked as she was feeling concerned about her friend. Kita noticed Hakuba was looking a little down in the dumps so she had to make an attempt to cheer him up. “Hey! Want to go have a cup of tea together and discuss the cases that we have solved?” she suggested as her attempt to make him happy.
“Yes, actually. I’m quite fine. But, Yamashita-chan, you realize that heists can be dangerous, yes? For everyone involved. Kaitou KID, the police, we detectives, the audience…. I wonder if you’re really prepared for this sort of thing. I know that you’e been training, but… whatever you do, please do be careful. And mindful of those around you.”
“It would be great to see you actually help out Conan-kun! He is a child after all so he still needs adult supervision. And you know what they say, the more, the merrier and strength comes in numbers.” Kita said with a smile.
“That’s actually not necessarily true, Yamashita-chan… the more people you have involved, the more the responsibility is diffused. This is often a problem that Nakamori-keibu’s police force has; too many, not enough accountability. It’s just too difficult to keep track.
”…further, Edogawa-kun has plenty of adult supervision. Heists are typically overrun with adults that refuse to listen or take any alternative ideas into consideration. Thus, despite the fact that we try our best, Kaitou KID will always best us in the end.“

“I can handle whatever investigative style that you got. And what do you mean by a passive approach? He is a thief and you are a detective. It is a detective’s job to catch the bad guys, right?” Kita asked as she looked at the British detective.
“Well… of course, Yamashita-chan, to… to an extent. After all, I’m more or less a private consultant, not officially part of the force. The ones actually in charge of arresting are the police and…” Was this a losing battle? He wasn’t certain how much of the police procedural would sink in or what would go over her head. Or how much of his lie that she’d catch on to. Hakuba bit his lip.
“Lately, I’ve been doing more observation than chasing. Nakamori-keibu and his team seem to have everything… more or less well in hand with Edogawa-kun running about, and with the addition of Hattori-san and others, well…”
“…it gets a little crowded."
“We can work together on that heist to catch Kid! A cute female detective and a handsome British detective is the perfect tag team!”
“Ah…"
Well, on the one hand, if he teamed up with her, he could ensure that she stayed out of trouble and out of the way. Honestly, he doubted that anyone was going to ever catch KID, let alone a novice like Kita, but she could cause a lot of headaches with her antics. Hm.
"Well… If I’m able to attend the heist, I might consider teaming up, I guess.. though you may not enjoy my particular investigative style, honestly. I’ve started to take a more, ah… passive approach to KID heists these days…”

“Thank you so much, Hakuba-kun! And are you going to go to Kaitou Kid’s next heist? I know I’m going.”
“Ah… I’ll need to see how my workload is going at the time. It’s a tricky thing, figuring out the heist note date/location in time to rearrange other plans, particularly travel… but I hope to be there…"
“Would you also like to bring Earl Grey tea for something to drink? We can make the dinner at my house feel multicultural. Having Japanese food with British tea. Doesn’t that sound delightful?”
“I’m not certain how well they would go together, but I’ll bring the supplies for tea, yes. Perhaps a nice green tea with dinner and Earl Grey later on in the evening with dessert. If you haven’t already planned for it, I would be happy to provide.”

“Saturday night. I have no school and no cases. How about you?”
“I always have something that I should be working on, but provided that I don’t get called into the station for any disasters, I should be able to come by for a couple of hours, at least…?”
“Hey Hakuba-kun! When do you want to come to dinner at my place? My mother still wants to meet you.”
“…Oh, well, I suppose if your mum will be there… Ah, perhaps we could arrange something. What night were you thinking, Yamashita-chan?”

Hakuba hates it when people go through his things without asking. Touching his books, looking through his case files, borrowing his pen, without asking, drives him absolutely nuts. The worst is when he has to have someone come over… like into his bedroom? And they start opening filing cabinet drawers or poking around the liquor cabinet… Or opening the cupboads in his kitchen, browsing… He’ll try to suffer through it with clenched fists and a tight jaw, but he will not be happy about it.

Back when things were happier, Hakuba, his parents, and (sometimes) Baaya would take a holiday to France every year, usually in August. They’d spend a week in Paris, go out to the country to a beautiful vacation home in Lyon for a week or so, and then back to France for a day or two before heading home. It was mostly exploring and shopping, but some of Hakuba’s most treasured memories are from those times.
Even after the separation, Hakuba Sr flew down to by with Marion and Hakuba, until he was 13. Then it was just Hakuba and his mother. And then just Hakuba. He only stays about a week, sometimes less, these days… and only travels as far as Paris… but he likes to get back there when he can, hoping to hold on to some of those good feelings just a little longer.

Hakuba’s favorite thing in the bible are parables, and he finds the fact that Christ used them in his teachings as incredibly significant. He hasn’t explained to me exactly why, but has mentioned that it ties into his beliefs about detectives and their work.
