It was far easier to play the adorable, helpful child around those he hadn’t spent a lot of time around, or those that didn’t know his true identity. While Hakuba seemed capable on his own, he hoped that he wouldn’t become another that figured his secret.

”What’s the dog’s name, and how’d it get out?” Conan wanted to asked what it was the owner wanted from the canine’s collar, but would wiggle his way into that question later.

“Her name is Mikki, and the current theory is that she somehow got out of my client’s car while it was parked at an office building, just two miles from here…”  Hakuba glanced in the direction of the building – north east – then back down to Conan with a sort of helpless frown.

“They think she just got out through the window, but I wonder if, perhaps, someone broke in to let her out. There were little scratches on the door next to the window, and it’s so terribly easy to break into those older cars. Here, I’ll show you a photo."

The taller detective pulled out his phone to scroll through the evidence that he’d captured earlier that morning, and held it out to him. Sure enough, the black car had tiny scratches in the paint, indicative of a metal object and several false starts to get between the door and the pane of glass.

"I have to admit that I’m more than a little upset at my client for leaving their dog in their parked car, but I suppose that can’t be helped now…"

“Th’ day after tomorrow good wi’ y’?”

“Yes,” Hakuba said, grimacing a little at the obvious little quirk in the woman. He hadn’t meant to insult her, really. Or, perhaps he had, but he hadn’t meant to do it quite so overtly. He was going to try a lot harder if he was going to avoid stirring Kazuha’s ire any more than he already had. “Yes, that day will be perfect. I’ll pick you up at six.”

It would either turn out quite well or simply awful. Hakuba wasn’t sure which, but it’d be an experience either way.

As much as he wanted to glare at the other detective, he could not bring himself to actually be angry. He had already caught him in a lie but his skepticism would only go so far. Especially when the blond was nearly wagging his tail. Shinichi’s brain just wasn’t built for the kind of paranoia he should have been experiencing. Haibara was right to say that it would probably get him killed one day.

Hopefully that day would not be today.

“I suppose it is,” he offered almost quietly, trailing after him with stiff shoulders. “Usually the only people who get nervous around me are criminals.” It was only a small hint of his suspicion but he assumed that Hakuba would take it. Though, now he was the nervous one.

“Yes, I have been to London. Why do you ask?” What an odd question under the circumstances… Or maybe it was just odd to him because he was suddenly so jumpy.

“I’m struggling to find an easy topic for discussion, that’s all.” Hakuba laughed, wincing at his own awkwardness. Then, again, he shook his head and offered a helpless shrug. “God, it’s not like me to get so starstruck. My apologies.”

Hakuba cleared his throat with a little cough into his fist, walking further into the cafe with a glance over his shoulder at the other detective.

“On the subject of London. Did you have the chance to see the sights, or were you stuck working business? I do hope that you got the chance to visit museum Baker Street, if nothing else.”
