Any thoughts on the new movie coming out?

“It seems to me that it would be prudent to reserve judgment for the moment; trailers are intended to incite hype and interest, not to reveal the film’s story. As we’ve seen in many trailers in the past, particularly for the Detective Conan franchise, they tend to be, ah… very misleading in terms of the actual events. Premise, perhaps— it seems that Kaitou KID is going after a painting, which is something that I can certainly see him doing — but as for who or what is behind the explosions, I really cannot say.

"Although the ‘rule’ of "No One Gets Hurt” has been proven to be nothing more than fanon, the spirit of said rule does seem to fit the thief’s profile. As he’s matured, it does appear that he’s moved away from the more crude techniques (using a wrench to knock someone out in the past vs sleeping gas) and onto the more sophisticated (cleverer tricks that don’t necessitate anyone being unconscious). Still, in the end, he does what must be done to get the job done.

“Unfortunately, in KID’s case, this sometimes comes with dangerous, even deadly, situations… As we saw with the Nightmare case, KID was blackmailed into breaking his own modus operandi, and while he pulled through in the end, someone still lost their life. Not that it was KID’s fault, mind… that sort of thing rarely is. It just comes with the territory of being an internationally wanted criminal with various assassins on your heels.

"Regardless, at his core, Kaitou KID is a good person. For a thief, I mean.”

“My guess is that the trailer has completely misled us with footage that has been cut in a way to suggest that Kaitou KID has completely lost his mind and is out to destroy everything… but is really not the culprit at all. It’s entirely possible that he is just as much a victim as everyone else in the scenes. I have to assume that someone else is causing the explosions, that KID is likewise trapped or coming to save them. OR, that those scenes don’t even exist in the first place? Many times these things are more symbolic than concrete in terms of their existence.

"If we remember movie number 13, The Raven Chaser, the trailer made a promise of Conan vs Gin. And while we did get a confrontation of sorts, it was not at all what they hinted at.

"The same happened in the most recent Conan vs Lupin III film, with hints of Kaitou KID, though, again, what we received was not what was "promised,” but since the promise was only perceived, there was nothing truly lost. Many fans were simply disappointed for having been tricked. Again.

“Frankly speaking, the idea that Kaitou KID becomes truly villainous character in this next film is far too interesting for it to be plausible. Detective Conan movies consistently underdeliver, and there’s a large chance that he’ll only be in and our of the movie as he has been in all others… in the background, the shadows, showing up for cameos, saving the day as he is prone to do despite not being the hero of the series. Especially considering that he is Gosho’s favorite character (and often thought of as self-insert), I doubt that he would be allowed to cross any unforgivable lines.

"There’s always the chance that we’ll be pleasantly surprised in the end, but I am not holding my breath. As with all teasers, you must expect that you are being intentionally misled by the editors, and that there’s no guarantee that material shown in a teaser will even be in the final film.

"It’s being effective in its design in that  it is getting the fans to feel things and discuss them with others— this is one of the best ways to drive audience members to the theaters, bring up numbers, and set up the franchise for support in future years.

"In the end, it is what it is: a commercial used to sell, and nothing more. In short, we’ll have to wait and see. We have nearly a year to wait, so don’t fret too much in the meantime or you may burn out.”

Hakuba stepped off of the curb and into the street, barely acknowledging the bus as it sped past him, leaving his long coat to flutter in its wake behind him. He gave a cursory glance to the left, then right, then continued through the traffic without so much as a flinch. His gaze was trained on one thing from that point; the brown paper package in the exact center of the six lane road. Rush hour. The blaring horns and screeching tires did little to deter him from continuing his pursuit. Indeed, if this was a test of his bravery, determination, or stupidity, he would pass with flying colors. He would not show fear, not for this Moriarty or any other to come.

The stern and reserved expression did not betray his wildly beating heart or sweaty palms as he bent to retrieve the package, though he paled somewhat at its weight. It could contain anything. But he did not have time to examine it now, turning to make his way through skidding cars to the other side of the busy street.

“no wonder” she chuckled.

She raised an eyebrow at the smirk he showed and realized she didn’t put on the seat belt until he mentioned. “oh yea” Shizune did as told and something was telling her that well…something was gonna happen.

Fortunately, that something was likely a smooth, trouble-free ride to the Hakuba Estate. Hakuba was a good driver, even though he… pushed the speed limit here and there. Just a tad. Or a lot. Either way, he made small chat along the way, elbow out the window, hand casually on the wheel.

“So I suppose we’ve never had you over… unfortunate, really. My father loves entertaining guests when he has the chance… but no one will be there today except for Baaya.”

He shrugged.

“It’ll be nice to have company. And the pie is very quick and easy…”

“Himura-kun,” Hakuba hissed, pulling her back against the wall. “Are you entirely certain that this place is… well, what I mean to say is, there’s something off about it, isn’t there?”

Of course there was. He wouldn’t have been invited to come if there hadn’t been something out of the ordinary with it. The large, metal corridor made him nervous. They were investigating something that he’d never even heard of before, but she seemed confident. How and why they’d broken into the facility he still wasn’t certain, but it seemed as though they were about to find out…

□ Our muses to be enemies

Being that you’re a THIEF I don’t think that will be a problem whatsoever! Hakuba just happens to interact with thieves as if they were somehow enemies. I’m not sure why, but I think it might have to do with him being a detective. Hmm hmm. Though be warned: if you’re anything like a certain Jeanne d’Arc, he may get distracted by the challenge  and try to seduce you, instead. Oops.

“I’ve no interest in petty thieves… though, you do seem to have a rather fine sense of taste. Such lovely paintings in your gallery, miss… I’m quite interested to see what else you might have in your little… collection.
