The thief arched a brow of his own at the lack of reaction, but he easily hid any disappointment behind a well trained pokerface and merely offered the detective a grin and a bow.

And then he took that final step over the edge and disappeared from view.

With practiced motions that he didn’t even need to think about anymore, KID released his glider and shot a brief glance back towards the roof. With no one nearby to see his face, he let his expression drop into a frown as a disappointed sigh left his lips, before he turned his attention straight ahead again, concentrating on letting the wind take him home.

And here he’d hoped he’d be able to relieve at least some of his boredom. But, apparently, lady Luck wasn’t on his side tonight.

At least not yet.

Hakuba turned from the thief to return to the scene of the crime, offering reports and statements and all of that bureaucratic nonsense necessary to absolve himself of responsibility for the unsuccessful evening. At least, it all looked good on paper, which is really all the administrations wanted. The detective himself, however, and the good officers around him, all felt that same bitter defeat even so.

Well, almost.

When the work was done, Hakuba went home and packed a duffel bag, and convinced Baaya to give him a ride.

“I’d rather not drive when I’m this distraught, Baaya.”

“…Are you sure you wouldn’t just rather stay home and sleep, young master?”

“Yes, I’m sure. I don’t think I could sleep. Besides, I promised Kuroba-kun that I’d help him with his studies. I’m not going to be made into a liar just because that bastard thief managed to get away again.”

“If you’re certain…”

And that is how Hakuba ended up on the walk in front of the Kuroba household, bag over his shoulder, expression determined and grim. All that was left was to get through the door.

He waited until Baaya drove away before walking straight up to it and knocking, then waited. Although his stoic expression hid it well, the detective could not wait to see Kaito’s reaction to this new and dastardly tactic of attack.

She trotted after him, curious now. She used rejuvenation every so often as she walked, producing vegetation in some of the bare patches near the path. Given the smell, it was likely people brought their dogs around here on occasion.

Though her curiosity was now piqued even more. He didn’t go to the shrines? Yet he had that smell of some purified object with him. Curious. Still, he reminded her of Waka, between the odd accent that didn’t match anything else she’d heard before and the blond hair.

It was a little further up the trail that Hakuba finally decided to stop.  There was a grassy incline with large stones, warmed from the filtered heat of the sun, perfect for perching upon. He crossed over the red-stained wooden trail marker on the side and climbed up to the rock, sitting down with the briefcase in his lap.

Then he paused, glancing back. Something white? A dog, perhaps, further down the trail. Hakuba couldn’t be sure. He only hoped that the animal wasn’t lost. Still watching, he took a sip from the coffee cup and winced. Still too hot.

A hum passed his lips and he cocked his head to the side, slightly, as if actually considering the request – but anyone who knew the thief would know he was merely teasing and, a few moments later, that familiar, toothy smirk settled on his lips. “I’m afraid I won’t be able to comply with that. My most sincerest apologies.“

Kaitou lowered his arm, the sapphire easily slipping into his pocket. And then he began to move, backing towards the edge of the roof with his gaze still locked on Hakuba and one hand raised in a casual wave. “Until next time, detective?”

It was not a good night to tease the foreign detective, and he raised an incredulous brow at Kaitou to show it. But he didn’t move, standing his ground, watching the thief with clenched fists.

“…yes, until next time, monsieur voleur.

Which would be soon, as Hakuba knew where Kuroba Kaito lived.

“Yeah, tell that to my hospital bill…” Kaito sat on the bed, shirtless. And, yeah, seemed like everything lately was going to hell, wasn’t it? He’d have a meltdown if he knew even more about that Bell Tree train mess or about Sazerac.

Hands behind his head, Kaito got up and followed Hakuba. What was with Hakuba lately and drinking? Not that he was tactless, but it was bothering him.

Hakuba plucked his suit jacket from the couch and unlocked the balcony, using his shoulder to push the sliding glass door open afterward. He knew that Kaito was following him, but he didn’t bother to argue. Kaito was stubborn, as himself and as KID, and probably wouldn’t listen anyway.

Out onto the balcony, Hakuba leaned against the concrete balcony rail, taking a swig of scotch straight from the bottle before setting it down on the ledge. Then, after a grimace and sharp exhale from the alcohol, he rummaged through his suit jacket and produced a pack of cigarettes – only to hesitate and push them back in their place. This was a non-smoking section of hotel. So instead he brought out the silver lighter and flicked it on and off uselessly. Brooding.

“Detective. What a surprise. If you’re here for the Lotus sapphire, I’m afraid you might be, ah…” A grin curled at his lips as he rolled the small gem between his fingers with practiced ease. “…A little too late.”

God, not this again.

Hakuba took in a calming breath, then let it out wearily, watching the thief. “As usual, yes, I understand that. However, my punctuality is not the issue here-” well, it had bothered him that he, yet again, hadn’t managed to figure out all of the clues and leaps in logic ahead of time to be there EARLY, but “- it’s the matter of your criminal antics. I know you’re simply going to return the gem anyway, so if you could kindly hand it over now we can get all of this nonsense over and done with.”

Yes, return the gem, not capture the thief. That would go over well.

A costume shop?  Perfect.  KID allowed himself a smile at the shop.  “That should do nicely.  Let’s hurry; I don’t know how much time we have before they find us.  It’s better to not find out.“

KID took Hakuba’s wrist and started in that direction, now more sure of where they were going.  Luckily as his hang-glider was abandoned, he didn’t have a cape trailing behind them to give them away.  Only the sounds of their shoes on the pavement, though that would’ve been easily muffled by any passing cars had there been any.  Still, they were out in the open, and KID didn’t like that at all.

Hakuba tried to avoid showing his irritation at being dragged through the city, but it was very, very difficult. He kept up, quickly losing steam, though his stubborn determination kept his legs moving. "Just look for the bicycle shop,” he said, huffing. “The stairs will be right next to it."

Further down the street, the edge of said repair shop was visible just around a block corner. They would have to cross an open street to get there, but it was in sight.

“I’m being serious. You have enough on your plate already between Pandora and the ravens and everything else. Making up stories about dragons would be in bad form, to say the least.”

He noted the scars down Hakuba’s back. Those weren’t any pattern he’d seen before, certainly not something caused by garden variety detective work. He got up and started getting dressed as well. It would be wisest if Hakuba weren’t irritated when asking about that.

image

“Dragons aren’t real."

Hakuba stood up and snatched his shirt from the nightstand, slipping his arms into the sleeves. His efforts stop there, and he looks back over his shoulder to Kaito. ”The world is getting knackered all around me and I haven’t figured out where I fit. Go back to bed. I’m not leaving. I just need… some fresh air, all right?“

He walked toward the balcony, brushing past the coffee table en route to take the half-empty bottle of scotch with him.

How do you hide your fear?

“The secret is to be afraid all of the time.”

“Prioritizing objectives by breaking less than ideal situations down into basic tasks with clear and manageable objectives. Then, it’s simply a matter of completing each task. Fear is easily defeated with a thorough to-do list.”

That man with the pure smell of having a blessed object? Amaterasu grinned about as much as a wolf could, her tail wagging.

She hadn’t really seen many humans who had that smell. Those that did were usually those exiting some local shrines (she wasn’t allowed to enter; they shooed her away). As she tried following up on them, though, most of them didn’t keep the smell for long.

Poor wolf. If only she knew.

The man in question, a detective by the name of Hakuba Saguru, walked on a path next to the river. It was late afternoon and the forest floor was splotched in shades of ambient yellows from the sun in the leaves. In one hand he carried a briefcase, in the other a cup of coffee. He was alone and looked tired. It was an unfortunate drawback to having so much casework to do on top of his schooling, which meant using weeknights and weekends studying files and reviewing court papers. This left little time for sleep or, heaven forbid, relaxing.

But the managed woods offered a reprieve from the story, at least, and the walking path was orderly enough. Hakuba passed by several small, informal shrines along the way and stopped at each one to regard them respectfully before continuing onward, looking for a comfortable place to sit and work.

Thus far, he hadn’t noticed any sort of wildlife except for the calls of the local birds.

“Thank you,” he sighed, relief washing over him. Maybe he had expected Hakuba to question it or even to disagree with the terms. His open understanding of the idea was the best outcome possible.

Though he couldn’t say that he was fully trustworthy just yet, he did know that Hakuba was an honorable guy and an exceptional detective despite his one-track-mind. And who knew? Perhaps Hakuba had gotten past his flaws since the last time they met. Everyone had the ability to advance.

Look at how far Hattori had come.

Regardless, Shinichi smiled at him with gratitude. Even though he seemed nervous, he figured that it was probably Hakuba’s curiosity. He had wanted to talk to him after all.

“I appreciate your silence,” he added. “It’ll make it a lot easier if we run into anyone.“

Hakuba, the detective with no flaws whatsoever, nodded at the other, likewise flawless, detective, and continued onward sheepishly. No, the foreigner wasn’t sinister, just a helpless fanboy.

"Of course,” he said again, agreeing, which he hoped would not come off too strongly. “I have to admit that I’m intensely curious, but I won’t press. Ah, that said, might I ask if you intend to officially join the force when you’re finished with studies, or will you be opening your own agency?”

Kind of a leap there, but okay.
