Honestly, it put the young journalist on cloud nine to see the little ploy he’d come up with, and he’d even chosen a clear, efficient model. (Hers wasn’t much different in all actuality, she’d just bought extra lenses and a slight upgrade). The manner in which he’d leapt almost jauntily to chauffeur her in to the car only expanded her beaming smile, and earned another spring of light, bell-like laughter.

“And they say that chivalry is dead— thank you, Hakuba-sama. You look rather dashing yourself, to nobody’s genuine surprise." Sure it was easier for someone to have the attention on her, but she was hardly the kind of girl who’d been doted over in the past, so no matter how comfortably she settled into the conversation, it seemed the colour in her cheeks wouldn’t die off easily.

"I’ll not keep it waiting any longer, good sir." She returned in a half-lofty, half-laughing tone, moving past him with a mock curtsy, before nestling securely into her seat. And a real swell chariot it is, yowzah. She thought admiringly while she awaited his return to the driver’s seat, before turning her smile back his way, "Is destination one to be a surprise, or am I allowed a courtesy hint to puzzle over on the way”

(Unlike most occasions, she hadn’t any discomfort or want to complain about being in a car. Go figure.)

Once her door was closed, quiet and firm, Hakuba moved back to the other side of the car, reaching in to pick up his camera, first.

“Hmm… Well, if we’re playing role-reversal here, you ought to be the detective, I think.” He took another photo, then lowered the camera to show a broad-grinned lip bite. “Of course, I’ll give you some clues, first."

He let himself into the car, buckled his seat belt, and put the lens cap back on the camera, safely stowing it in a compartment just under the gear shifts. "The clues I’ll give you are as follows: bones, but not grave; flora, but not floral; plane, but not airport, and… ancient, but not outdated."

Hakuba started the car, which revved with a delicious purr, and pulled away from the curb, en route to their first stop.

The game was on. Or rather, games. The sandy-haired detective seemed to be interested in another sort of playing, if that smug look was a signal, if not sounding alarm of the intention. Decidedly smooth, the amusement seen in his butterscotch eyes along with his well-bred air completed the effect. The dear detective wanted to challenge her.

The outreached hand seemed to be reaching towards the thief’s competitive side, if not just for her hand. It couldn’t be seen in her eyes, but the fire inside her flared spiritedly.

Oh, he wants to play. Let’s not disappoint, shall we?

Thank goodness she decided to forgo the gloves for tonight’s outfit. Not that she was planning this.. Ahem.

Slipping her left, or wrong hand into his, Jeanne stepped close to him before he could make a move. The other hand, she let hold the right side of his face in a gentle caress. Tiptoeing slightly despite her heels, she kissed the knuckles of her own hand that held his face.

But she wasn’t done yet. Not even close.

Moving slightly further towards him, she spoke in his ear softly.

“A little different, but this is a bit more interesting than the usual knuckle-kissing, no?”

Moving back so her face was almost close enough to his to kiss but not quite, the wickedly playful look in her eyes could be clearly seen. Violet eyes seeming to tease him as they peered unabashed in his. And yet her smile remained as gracious as if she was receiving him for tea.

“And interesting is the least I could do for my dear detective.”

If there was to be a loser in this risky game, it would not be her.

Uhm.

For a brief moment, the surprise was evident on Hakuba’s face. He didn’t move, not wishing to pull himself away, not daring to steal a kiss. He knew that he was likely to be denied and made a fool with either move, so he stayed where he was, staring right back at her as he regained his composure. Quickly, yes, but with someone that sharp, it was sure to be noticed.

“Interesting yes, I wholeheartedly agree. Thank you for that.”

Indeed, the detective was grateful. That display of wicked confidence not only made her the most desirable woman in the room, but also put her at the very top of his suspect list.  No one out for a night of mock romance was that intense. No, no; someone of that sharp intelligence was manipulative and calculating… was figuring out how to use him instead of the other way around.

His free hand moved to cradle the small of her back, but did nothing more than rest ever so gently. Barely there at all. It was a risky and dangerous game, yes, but Hakuba wanted to play. He very badly wanted to play and to win. At least, in a manner of speaking.

“Are you here with someone tonight, mon ange?”

phantom-thief-kid said: KID, meanwhile, was patrolling about in his new form, slinking around. Seeing a lion, though, out and in a field of grass did confuse him. He carefully crept up to get a closer look.

Upon hearing the approaching snow leopard, Hakuba lazily looked over, then went back to resting. Big scary lions aren’t afraid of anything right? Plus… stomach… so full of grass…

She deserved that…

“Your prevarication is pointless, Hakuba-kun. I did not ask you to sit with me so that I could listen to you complain,” she snapped, crossing one leg over the other and placing her hands delicately in her lap. “You know very well that I did not request your company to ridicule you so I would ask that you do me the same courtesy.“

She didn’t mean to bark at him but he was acting very unlike himself, or perhaps it had really just been that long since they had seen each other. People could change their attitudes so quickly some times.

Leaning back against the chair, she tilted her chin down to look up at him, more defensive than offensive. Maybe that would get him to relax a little. She had no use for a puffed up detective. He would probably just sit there in his bubble of rage for the rest of the visit.

"If we can come to a cordial agreement then perhaps we can get somewhere with this conversation. Otherwise, you can be on your way,” she remarked, allowing just a hint of irritation into her voice. “I’m sure you have so much shopping to do. A new outfit to impress, perhaps. You always looked good in red.“ She was rambling casually, trying to get him to calm down, though it was true. He looked handsome in red and white and she sort of missed giving him little bits of advice like that.

Hakuba managed to have a somewhat placid, neutral expression on his face for most of Akako’s chiding. But the flirting… and the irritation… It was almost too much. The detective sighed with a huff and leaned back in his chair, arms folding across his chest.

"All right, all right. I apologize. I’m certain you can’t blame me for being… defensive.” But even with those words, he was laying back the bristled quills. Reluctantly, but doing so regardless. “No need for shameless flattery, I believe we both know where we stand on the issue of attraction…”  Namely that, at one time, he’d thought of her as quite beautiful and had made that absolutely clear. And, he thought, she had liked him well enough, as well.

He didn’t manage to force a smile at first, but the scowl faded, at least. “What do I owe the pleasure of your company this afternoon, Koizumi-san? I… do hope that it’s not only fashion advice, because you very well know that I prefer the color blue.”  It was a tease. And with it, did come an uneasy half-smile. Hesitant, half-hearted, but an effort nonetheless.

“Relax, Hakuba. It will be okay. If need be, I could mimic you and make it look like you went on a trip or another and will be away for how long you’re stuck like this.”

If the goat could, he might have made a face much like this:

But since he was a goat, he continued to look as he had been, only with a tilt of his head and ears perking forward.

He did not really want KID living in his house and being in his bedroom unattended. There were secrets there. Lots of secrets. But then, KID said that he could talk about going away… and he did, often, leave for a couple of days for case work…

So the goat nodded and frowned as best as a goat can.

Error Margins/Big Mistakes

I just did something that was incredibly illegal. More illegal than underage drinking, certainly. Ah…

Perhaps I should explain that I have been having a lot of very vivid dreams lately. I believe they may be due to the sleep deprivation or stress that I’ve been experiencing, or perhaps the extra drink here and there I’ve picked up, but regardless, dreams. Sometimes I’m being chased, tracked down, and brutally murdered. Other times I’m having relationship issues with six different versions of Kaitou KID and his alter-ego.

And then, ah, sometimes, I’m having tea with an incredibly perceptive woman who gives me advice about… cases and my concerns regarding justice and law, moral quandaries…

Those documents that I discovered while investigating my colleague… The ones that had been scrubbed clean to the point of blatant and obvious tampering… they have been driving me absolutely bonkers. I couldn’t stop thinking about them. How anyone who went through so much effort to obtain, rewrite, and replace these documents with as much care, would be so… so careless in the end. It’s maddening to me. It’s as if they want him to be discovered and for everything to fall apart.

Which would destroy him.

It… it wasn’t difficult at all to add the information. It didn’t take very long. The numbers were very easy to fabricate. I’ve spent so much time looking for mistakes in others’ work that it was such a simple matter to create it…

Perhaps I should warn him when I see him… that whoever it is that’s ‘helping’ him is not exactly doing their job. Then again, I probably shouldn’t be helping with something as… as ghastly as this whole affair.

Yet I couldn’t let it go, either.

It might be time to reevaluate my drinking habits, perhaps… and sleep schedule. And appetite? I should probably have one… at least some of the time.

What am I doing?

[Hakuba Bastard, why did you decide to show up?]

“Then who is on top of your list, Hakuba? While I may not be the most…deadly of your rivals, I’m certainly the funnest, and you my dear detective need some fun in your life. I’d hate to see your talents go to waste on a lesser criminal than me.

Hmm, nope… Our little detective of the east is currently my favorite. He keeps me busy enough without you here. Unless you’re willing to change that? I propose a game for my second favorite detective of all time. I don’t want your skills to weaken after your time overseas, it’ll do you good. If you’re interested?

"Now, now, I’m not about to give away my list of targets… Rest-assured, you are one of my favorite criminals to chase, but I’m not sure how interested I am in catching you. Believe it or not, it’s kind of entertaining to watch my little kohai chase you.”

“…though I’ll admit that I’m hurt that I’m only your second favorite detective. If you have something in mind for me to redeem myself, I’m all ears and very interested.”

Confirmations

Ticket to Paris confirmed. Hotel reservation confirmed. Car rental confirmed. I’ll be going alone, but at least I won’t be here.

I’m planning to take a side trip to Germany while overseas… and fly back from London so that I can take Watson with me.

Maybe that will help, somehow…

[Hakuba Bastard, why did you decide to show up?]

“Shouldn’t you spend some time with your other criminals, Hakuba dearest? I’m beginning to think that you’re becoming obsessed with me."

image

"Obsessed? Really. Whatever gave you that idea? You ought to know that I divide my attention equally among the criminals I chase, at least proportionally speaking according to priority, severeness of crime, level of obnoxiousness, and time sensitivity… Which means that you are not nearly at the top of my list. So no, not obsessed. Just curious.”

“…Unless you want me to be obsessed for some reason. Did you miss me, dear thief? I know I’ve been overseas for a while…”
