Oh but it’s true. Do you want to know how he begged for it? How much he said he wanted it? How he laid down and took all of it like an obedient pet? That he screamed and sobbed like a little brat because he bit off more than he could chew.

It wasn’t the first time that he’d heard of the incident… but while he originally dismissed it, further research proved far more troubling than he’d anticipated. Hakuba pulled out his mobile to send a text while he scrolled through the forums, brows furrowed. Dread and horror filled him slowly, ache like the gnawing cold of rising flood water.

[text] Just checking in. Hullo!

He’d seen Kaito just recently, hadn’t he? Or spoken to him, at the very least. Really, the detective had been so busy since returning from his trip to London that the past week and a half had been little more than a blur. Still, though, this sort of thing didn’t happen to Kaitou Kid. It just didn’t. …did they?

[text] Would you like to do something later?

Hakuba stretched, leaning back in his chair as the information sunk in. From the video clips that had been posted, it was a simple enough task to determine the approximate location of the scandal, but even with that, it was difficult to ascertain if any of it was legitimate or not. Sex tapes and snuff films were popular among a particular crowd, and many adopted celebrity or character personas to draw in a larger audience. It was a disgusting practice, but unfortunately one of the things that a detective had to deal with from time to time.

[text] Are you still asleep~?

As the seconds ticked by – which Hakuba verified via pocket watch – his anxiety deepened. To act or not? If it really was his Kuroba Kaito, he needed to be there immediately. If it wasn’t, did he risk revealing that he had a particular and personal interest in the thief’s wellbeing? While it was true that he hadn’t made the claim that they were enemies recently, and he was one of the forefront members of the Kaitou Kid task force, there was easily cause for concern that he could become emotionally compromised without due cause, betraying his secret. Both of their secrets.

[text] Kuroba, I really need to know that you’re all right

What to do? He’d need to proceed with caution, regardless. Sighing, he set to work drafting a reply to one of the forum threads.

Has anyone been able to confirm this yet? Or, more importantly, has anyone reported the incident to the authorities?

That was all that he really felt he could discuss openly on the matter; it all upset him too much. Kuroba or not, those who took photos, recorded video, or stared instead of immediately informing the police were nothing but cruel abusers, themselves. And, had it been staged, it was at the very least a matter of public indecency. How did this sort of thing happen? So many had died simply because the available people had chosen to be spectators instead of heroes. He knew that all too well. Paparazzi was such a dirty word.

…and why the personal messages? A trap, perhaps. After all, Hakuba had made many enemies in his profession, so it wasn’t completely unlikely. He picked up his phone again, this time attempting to call his classmate, but was met with voicemail. After a brief ‘please get back to me as soon as possible,’ he hung up and began dialing the station to see if there had been any reports made.

But before he could hit the ‘call’ button, another call came in.

“Hakuba Saguru speaking.”

“Hakuba. Where are you right now?”

“Conan-kun?” Hakuba frowned, surprised at the tone and aggressiveness with which the normally sweet boy addressed him. “I’m at my father’s estate in Ekoda. What can I do for you?”

“How fast can you get to Akihabara?”

The blond closed his eyes, taking in a breath while he calculated, again, the ETA for travel time. “Approximately twenty six minutes, though I may be able to shave it to seventeen and a half, dependant on traffic and parking. Why do you ask?” Though he already knew.

You’re the so-called expert on Kaitou Kid. I’m calling you in.”

That was all the confirmation that Hakuba needed, and was out the door and jogging down the hall in an instant.

“Understood. I’m on my way.”

kuroba-k reblogged your post and added:

It was amusing how Hakuba instantly took to a somehow defensive attitude, openly showing his scepticism. Kaito kept on smiling, neither hiding that he was expecting such a reply.

“Maybe I’m bored of the sometimes subtle and sometimes less subtle rivalry we’ve been having since you joined our class. You do behave a little aloof in general and it really annoys me to be accused as KID, but I actually think that there’s a nice guy behind all that behaviour. You keep informing me about that German illusionist as if he is dangerous and I should know what he does. I know you’re sending it because you think I’m KID and you’re trying to warn KID. But that proves it even more, you’re warning a criminal to watch out, you care for people.”

Agrin flashed across his face. “And yes, I’m well aware that I called KID a criminal. I know stealing is against the law. Doesn’t make him less cool though. He’s never hurt anyone and his magic is good.”

Were it not for the final sentiment in Kaito’s response, Hakuba might have found the entire exchange all too pleasant. This would have been suspicious, which would have given the poor detective far more work to do in order to maintain the conversation. Fortunately, with the additive about Kid, Hakuba relaxed. It was still Kuroba Kaito, and yes, he was still an ass.

But, for the moment, an amiable one.

“Well. It is true that I do care for people, and while you could make the claim that Kaitou Kid is something of an unusual commodity, I wouldn’t go as far as to say that he’s ‘cool.’ Granted, in my position, it’s a little difficult to avoid bias, but… that is just how it goes, I suppose.”

The blond shrugged his shoulders, attempting to convey a posture of casual nonchalance. He didn’t particularly enjoy being analyzed, let alone by one of his classmates, and especially not when quite so accurate.

“Regardless of all that, though… you wish for us to become friends, then?” It baffled him, but on the whole, he was… oddly pleased at the idea.

”What are you doing here?” The older detective would have, no doubt, preferred a proper greeting, but Conan was too curious for his own good.

“Ah, Conan-kun! It’s a pleasure to see you this afternoon. I’m actually looking for something…”  The foreign detective brought a hand to his chin, eyes narrowing as he scanned the area. “I don’t suppose that you’ve seen a dog running around this area, have you? Large, sandy-colored golden retriever?”

“If I had the opportunity to replace all your liquor with tea, I would do it in a HEARTBEAT.”

She’s sat down at a table in the library, teaset splayed out. No tigers in sight except for the one sleeping beside her in the Greek-styled sofa.

“Oh, come now, I’m not that bad, Miss Knox. Am I?” He sighed. “I know that I go overboard from time to time, but honestly, liquor will never be more important to me than tea.”

Hakuba, what was your favourite activity to do in gym class? Do you have a favourite memory of that one as well?

image

“I’ve always enjoyed swimming, but not so much with my classmates for obvious reasons, and though I was part of the track team for three years, I didn’t particularly enjoy that in class, either. It was always tennis that I liked best. Not many stood a chance against me, as it’s been a habit to go to the country club any weekend I can get away to play.”

image

"Now, favorite memory…? The exam for our tennis unit in grade 10 involved combining the all-male class with the all-female class for a tournament. Boys against girls. Of course, we all wore our standard gym attire, but many of the girls hadn’t seen just how short our shorts were.

"Thus began the teasing and taunting on both sides, even though it was all rubbish because as nice and short as they were, the baggy t-shirts we were forced to wear left much to be desired as far as attractive sportswear was concerned.

"…regardless, our team lost by a narrow margin. Most of the blokes on my team really did not care for the sport or participation in general, anyway, so it wasn’t a surprise. But, I did receive several compliments from the girls on my legs. Again, track team. Ah, blessed tennis shorts."

Hakuba, have you had a case that involved a suspect that was around your age? How did that go down?

image

“Several times, actually. Some of whom involved close, personal friends. It’s always thoroughly disappointing to see young people throw their lives away. Granted, I do have the young Ripper blokes to thank for inadvertently introducing me to my Moriarty, but even so… half of their gang is now dead, thanks to their illegal activities.”

Hakuba, would you like to have more friends? So if what kind of friends would you like to have? I mean, ones you would really like to have?

image

“Friends come and go, and many end up being nothing more than a waste of time. That said, the friends that I do keep tend to be intelligent, respectful, and quiet – at least for the most part. I do not feel that I need more friends at present, as I do have a small handful of people that I feel I can count on, not including my colleagues, whom I am more inclined to spend my time with, anyway.”

139. Would it bother you if you found out that your mother was pregnant?

image

“My god, yes, considering that she and my father are separated, not divorced, and haven’t seen each other in several months… I know that she has many suitors interested, but I trust that she’s a lady who honors her vows. I mean really, what kind of a question is this? If you know something that I don’t, you may as well tell me this instant! Is it the doctor?! I knew I never should have left England! Damn that bloody physician! I realize that we keep him on retainer, but he has no business making so many house calls, insanely attractive or not!”

Hakuba, what was an interesting fact you learned about your family? It could be about your fathers or your mothers family.

“Despite being incredibly archaic in his personal beliefs, Hakuba-ojiisan has some very progressive views on modern science. He has made it a point to keep his laboratory and staff on the forefront of technological and procedural advances, becoming one of the leading privately owned and funded laboratories in the country. Indeed, the eldest Hakuba is quite the man of science. I only wish he weren’t so racist. He still does all that he can to pretend that I don’t exist.”

“Grandfather Wickham, on the other hand, was a shrewd business man whose vice was in the cards. He was a gambling man who loved his liquor, and no one could best him in poker or billiards. He died when I was quite young, but I have fond memories of the scent of scotch he drank and the cigars he liked to carry around in his suit jacket. I miss that man. I think we all do.”

If I take a flight on British Airways, I can make it back to Tokyo in under 16 hours, assuming I’m able to book one-way and make it to the airport with enough time for international security. Given that I’ve been issued my replacement passport, and Mum is willing to drop me off right at the terminal… one checked bag, one carry on… 43 minutes travel time from the estate, approximately 30 minutes for express security diamond, 10 minutes to the gate, 12 hr 5 minute flight, another 25 minutes to get from gate to baggage claim and to the curb, and a cab to my father’s home…

Adjusting for the time zone shift and the demonstrated personal set-in time for jet lag, I should be able to make it in time for afternoon tea before passing out in the ensuing fifteen hours that follow, putting me at a 5:30am wake up, just in time for my routine jog and back on schedule for the court appointment at 10:45am.

Then it’s all a matter of supplying the collected evidence, my carefully rehearsed testimony, a persuasive argument regarding the inevitable plea bargain, and celebrating the predicted verdict.

All according to keikaku.
