“It is fine. I thought you hated me for the longest time as well. Between the bickering and the attempts to get me to confess about being KID…” He grinned impishly, though he was still close to Hakuba.

The blush was adorable, if he were being honest. Not that he’d say that to Hakuba. Though it’d make him blush more, KID didn’t want to overdo it. He’d been through quite a bit already tonight and flustering him even more would be rude and unwise.

“Maybe you should listen to your presumptions.”

That… That was not at all how Hakuba had expected Kaito to react. Startled, he turned to the thief again, eyes wide and uncharacteristically honest. Vulnerable. He didn’t dare smile because he didn’t understand. What had he meant by that?

The end result was a red-faced anxious detective, stunned to silence with confusion, concern, hope, despair, and fear written all over him at once. It was not a side that he showed to anyone, really. Not at all the calm, cold, and collected front that he usually presented.

He gulped, swallowing hard, hanging on every word, afraid that if he said anything, he’d destroy everything.

But oh, how he wanted to kiss him again.

Re: HAKUBA’S MOTIVE

“I was taking a page out of your book and trying to use process of elimination. But I understand and thank you for that.” And now he’d basically dropped the pretense of denying being KID. Shit.

“Also, if that’s your goal, you may wish to be just a bit wary of that Edogawa kid. He’s… ruthless, in a way. He, uh, used KID as live bait for ruthless murderers, among other things. I don’t know what that Mouri guy is teaching him, but he’s clearly learning a few bad lessons…”

To save pride for them both, and to avoid getting too many personal feelings involved, Hakuba only gave a nod in regard to the long-awaited admission. On the subject of Conan, however, he raised a brow, frowning.

“Don’t be so easily fooled… if Edogawa-kun is learning anything from that lousy excuse for a PI, it’s what not to do. That boy has the makings of being the most talented detective anyone’s ever before seen… And that unwavering dedication to justice is what will make him a far better detective than I ever will be. So yes, do be wary. He won’t prove to be a Javert or Lestrade… He’ll be a veritable Sherlock. By the time he’s our age, he’ll be making Kudou-san and I look like foolish children."

Apologies for the silence – shortly after the “cat incident,” I had to leave town for London rather immediately for an emergency. I shall report more later on… for now, there’s a case that desperately needs my attention.
