Hate Date in Osaka

meitanteiosaka:

Heiji reared back, dumbstruck. Hakuba chastising him in that annoying condescending tone he was used to. But this? Well, the Brit was being honest, he supposed. He just hoped that was a good thing. And he felt a little guilty; he hadn’t meant to embarrass the other boy.

“Of course I can,” he replied in English. His accent was American, with a slight Japanese lilt. “In fact, I think it would be interesting to take classes abroad. England, America, Australia, any of them. I like trying new things. And it might not even matter if I was at the top of my class or not, because I know I would have done my best. And if I didn’t succeed, then that’s more reason to push myself. No one’s perfect, after all, and there’s always room for improvement.“ He took another bite of okonomiyaki, ignoring the stares from Katsura. That’s right, the man had never heard him speak English before, had he?

"I’m sorry for embarrassing you. It wasn’t intentional.” There. He’d apologized. All that was left was to see how Hakuba reacted. And if the detective wanted, he’d continue to speak in English.

For a moment, all Hakuba could do was stare. Slowly, as the Osakan went on his self-important ramble, the foreign detective’s jaw actually dropped. The words that Heiji had said were ultimately unimportant and easy to dismiss; he couldn’t care any less for his aspirations of being his best and ego, but the way that he said them… The accent, the diction, the… everything.

“Good God,” Hakuba said, voice a whisper and also in English, without realizing it. “Flawless. Utterly… flawless."

The chopsticks clattered as they fell from Hakuba’s hands and onto the plate and he turned toward Heiji, wide-eyed.

"Y-you… you’ve been able to speak perfect English this entire time… with.. with that voice … and you… insist on…”

Hakuba ran a hand through his hair. “Bloody hell, Hattori-san…"

Tea, or coffee? And regardless of which, how do you take it? (straight, with sugar or milk, etc.)

Tea- if it’s a good Earl Grey, I take it with milk and two sugars. Most other teas (even Asian) are usually with a combination of sugar and honey, depending on what is available. Honey is particularly good in green tea, I’ve found.

Coffee- I like with both milk, cream, and sugar… I suppose I have a little bit of a sweet tooth, if I were to be completely honest.

I’ll drink it black if I have to, however. Function over form, I suppose, when necessary…

Re: Other Career Opportunities

“All of those options are certainly commendable, though I suppose I have a bias when saying you’d have made a fine journalist. Though what I find the most intriguing is the bit about breed and show- do you have a past in dressage?”

“First, thank you for the kind comments. I’m only informally familiar with the work. One of my uncles does it professionally for his vocation and often invites me to assist with tending the horses when I’m home – ah, in England, I mean.”

“He taught me all that I know about horses and equine care. I didn’t understand at first why he insisted that I learn to saddle a horse when the attendants could do it for me… but I’m so glad that he did. There’s really nothing like working with your own two hands… and the work of getting your horse ready for riding is an invaluable time to really care for and bond with the animal…”

“Ah, my apologies, I’m rambling again. I hope that answers your question sufficiently!”

Did you, or perhaps, /do/ you ever aspire to join a career apart from investigation? Are there any passions you have that you’d pursue more avidly, if you had the time?

image

“I once thought that I might be a lawyer, or a superintendent for the police. I think that I’d make a decent professor at a university, too, if I found the right fit…”

image

“Ah, once I’d entertained the idea of being a journalist. I suppose that’s much like being a detective, but without helping people, however… just more published writing…"

image

"Regardless, when I retire from my detective duties, I think I should quite like to have a property with acres of land and stables, out in the English countryside. I’d love to breed and show horses, I think.”

Super Secret Tips to win Hakuba’s Heart

image

(( Hakuba might not even know these so use them carefully…))

1) Give him a dragon

image

He was obsessed with dragons when he was an ickleba – had plushies, toys, books, posters, bed spread… dragons dragons dragons. They’re all gone now and he’s largely forgotten that he once wrote an essay about how dragons were real and that his father needed to acknowledge and respect this. But then, he was six years old. He still pays attention whenever they’re mentioned, he just doesn’t exactly remember why.

2) Animals of pretty much any kind (except for large, angry dogs)

image

Yeaahh… Hakuba is just a big softy when it comes to animals. He gets along with them far better than people. Particular favorites are dogs, horses, and of course his pet hawk. (also tigers, shh)

3) Hand-written letters

image

He just really likes them, but can’t find any reliable pen pals.

4) REMEMBER HIS PREFERENCES

If you notice something about him (something he says, does, seems interested in), and show him that you remember, he will be putty in your hands.

THERE.

“Did… you have to use the… least masculine photos possible?”
