The Meaning of the Monocle

smokebombsandmirrors:

Kaito nodded and placed the helmet on the floor then gingerly moved the backpack off his back. He unzipped his coat and shrugged out of the leather and hung it up. Reaching for the pack he pulled out the temperature bag with the wine. “I brought a wine. I’m not sure if its any good but I knew you liked them.”

He slipped the bottle out of the bag and offer the bottle of Pingus.

Taking the offered bottle, Hakuba turned it over in his hands to inspect the label. The name looked familiar, but he couldn’t quite place it… Likely something he’d had before at one of his mother’s parties, but he wasn’t certain. Regardless, he wondered how it would stack up to the wine he’d already chosen for the evening, taking a moment to reconcile the conflicting data in his mind. It was proper to bring a gift for the host, and wine was an appropriate choice. But what about when the event was wine tasting? He’d have to ask Baaya later.

“Thank you, Kuroba-kun,” Hakuba said instead, giving a bow out of habit- he’d been in Japan for too long. “Shall we?"

Pride and Obligation

smokebombsandmirrors:

“Are you coming back?” he asked and draped an arm over his forehead. “cause this hurts too much ….. be alone …. I just …. really….like you ….”

The phone slipped from his hand and clattered to the floor.

Hakuba held his breath as Kaito spoke, free hand gripping the car door tightly until his knuckles were white. “Well, I…”  he paused, eyes going wide at the sound of the phone being dropped. "Ku-Kuroba? Kuroba-kun?!“

Oh god, no. The blood loss? Perhaps it had been more serious than Kaito’d said. He was always hiding his injuries, always pretending that things were all right when they really, really weren’t! DAMN that stubborn thief!

The detective wasted no time in getting in and starting the car, shouting once more into his phone before tossing it to the seat. "I’m on my way! Hang on, Kuroba, or I’ll NEVER forgive you!"

Never before had he gotten from his father’s home to Kaito’s in such a short amount of time. It was lucky for him that, being as late as it was, there was almost no one on the road. Somehow, he avoided being pulled over, too, which was especially good as he was technically still inebriated, though the worry had sobered him fairly well.

He jogged from the car once it was sloppily parked in front of the house, medical duffel in hand, and took the raced to the door, knocking briskly.

"Kuroba-kun? It’s me; please open the door!"

britishhsdetectivehakuba:

Dear Hakuba Saguru-

Enclosed is one case (20 boxes, 100 pieces per) of what I find to be one of the most useful, but perhaps least appreciated, pieces of investigative equipment in my arsenal. These gloves (one use) are powder-free so that they don’t leave gritty residue on your hands or evidence. They’re also textured, which is useful for handling objects, using tools (in the lab, especially), and navigating particularly messy crime scenes.

You’ll also notice that they are black. I typically use these gloves during the photography portion of an investigation. They won’t stain with whatever you happen to come in contact with and offer a helpful contrast to make use of a size/reference comparison. Some of my colleagues find them to be a little intimidating, which is only an added bonus. It’s simply not as distracting as the white gloves spotted with blood and dirt.

Finally, of course, they are said to meet or exceed the ASTM criterion, so they are quite safe and should gently protect your hands quite nicely.

Good luck in your endeavors, and please have a wonderful and productive birthday on my behalf.

Respectfully yours,

S. J. Hakuba

Hakuba chuckled softly to himself as he read of the note, eyes flicking back towards the box of gloves every once in a while. Once he finished with the car he placed it down and gently lifted the box into his lap, and ran a finger over it. Yes, this was a very practical gift indeed, and he couldn’t help the soft smirk that graced his lips. He did very much enjoy this gift, he would have to send a thank later to his other self.
