“Now that you mention it…there really was one…before.” So that was the case, huh? Well, Kogoro-Occhan did certainly had a client before concerning a drug dealer. Though, Conan couldn’t quite remember well who. “But…it was long ago, I guess. Hmm…” Since it was an easy hook-off case, he didn’t really bother to plant it in his mind. Though, he was certainly sure there was before. Putting a finger to his chin as he carefully thought of and tried to remember who it was that asked Kogoro-Occhan for the case, he became silent for a moment.
Ahh, no good, no good! I couldn’t remember the name of the person who asked for Occhan’s help with the case!
Letting out a sigh, Conan then started kicking off his ball again as he told the older teen detective with his back turned against him the words, “Hey, Hakuba-san. How about we go back to the agency now? It’s always the best if you ask Occhan directly yourself.” And of course, with a cheeky tone attached to his voice accompanied by a boyish grin.
“That sounds like a wonderful idea, thank you Edogawa-kun.” Hakuba straightened up into a stand at that, taking a moment to adjust his suit jacket and tie. He wasn’t particularly excited about having been sent to retrieve the information from Mouri-san, but at least seeing the promising young detective made it somewhat more bearable.
“I’ll follow your lead, if you don’t mind. But, tell me, have you been up to any interesting cases lately? I’ve been watching the newspapers for more of your exploits… Great work, incidentally, with your consistency in stopping that rotten Kaitou KID from his dastardly deeds. I’m truly impressed.”
The boy’s gaze followed the movements of the brunette quietly, watching his every move. Conan watched as Hakuba untied and retied his shoelaces while they talked. “Hehh… so Hakuba-san went here to discuss something with Occhan? But, that’s strange. I’ve never heard of anything scheduled about receiving a visitor at the agency today.” And he spoke with that usual, innocent child-like tone of his, hands buried down on his pockets.
Then, as though it was such a great idea, he then diverted the topic to, “Hey, hey! What case is it all about? Tell me, Hakuba-san!” with his voice sounding like he’s some child in desperate for adult attention. Though, he wore that innocent expression on his face.
Being a little persistent are we, chiisana tantei-kun?
“Oh, I suppose I didn’t call ahead for an appointment, did I?” Hakuba asked, frowning a little at that. He’d really meant to, certainly, but… things with Mouri-san were often so frustrating for him that he liked to show up a bit unannounced in hope that the meetings would have to be – oh so unfortunately!!! – short and to the point.
“Ah, well, the case is about a drug dealer, actually… I’d heard that Mouri-san had a client that had dealt with them before, so I was hoping to cross-reference some information."
Despite the fact that his shoe was now fully tied, Hakuba stayed close to the ground so that he could watch Conan at eye-level, grin never quite leaving his face.
A chuckle escaped through the boy’s mouth as he put crossed his hands behind his neck while lightly shaking his head, saying, “Hehh… yeah! It’s nice to see you to— Ah, that’s right. What about you, Hakuba-san? What are you doing here? Did something happen?”
“Nothing too much,” Hakuba said, crouching down to check one of his shoelaces. It was perfectly tied already, but getting down on Conan’s level made things easier. He untied the shoe, then began to retie it. “I’ve got a case to discuss with Mouri-san; something that the boys at the office wanted to know about. Is he in?”
Stops playing with his ball, picks it up from the ground and turns to greet the taller teen with a friendly smile. “Ah, Hakuba-san!”
Hakuba returned the smile with a wide grin of his own, then a laugh, pleased with such a pleasant welcome. “Edogawa-kun! How pleasant to see you today. What are you up to, hm? Not causing too much trouble, I hope?"
“Hmm… That’s true, indeed… But I have doubts.” The boy put a hand to his chin, thinking and assessing things for a few minutes. “If I remember correctly, just you, Hakuba-san, is able to chase down and track KID all by yourself. Isn’t your intelligence alone enough for everything?”
Just as soon as he realized the words he let out, Conan immediately snapped his head up to look at Saguru and smiled in defense with a small wave of his hands. “B-but I’m not saying that I wouldn’t like to spend time with you, Hakuba-san!”
And what was that about the inside information he has? Well, all the more reasons that Hakuba himself is enough. Especially since he already had further information about KID. Though, this is a bit exciting. Well, chasing KID had always been both frustrating and exciting for the shrunken detective.
“That’s all right, I understand. Do keep in mind that I haven’t been able to capture him yet, even with as much as I know. I’m not sure if we’ll ever be able to catch that old fox in the end, but it would be fun to try. But, ah, let’s get curry first. There’s a restaurant just down the street that I recall having the most wonderful tea to accompany lunch. Shall we?”
“Eh? Seriously? That was supposed to be a joke. But, I guess…yeah, I think we can. Though, that sneaky thief’s a tough and troublesome case.”
“That he is, that he is indeed… but all the more reason why we should work together, yes? Perhaps we’d have a chance to take him down once and for all. I have some inside information, you see… and I’ve been following his career as a thief for quite some time now.”
Hakuba really had no intention whatsoever of letting Kaitou KID get caught, but if the thief wanted him to chase, he’d chase. And if he got to spend time with Conan in the process, all the better. Especially as it would allow him the opportunity to learn, perhaps, just what made Conan – and by extension, Kudou – as incredible as he was.
But he wasn’t going to mention that.
“Yeah, I guess… Well, I wouldn’t be wasting my energy to something so small and trivial like that.” And his grin spreads a little widely.
“Eh? Curry? Spend time with me?”
Could it be…
“Hey, we’re not just going to eat, are we?”
“Well… there might be a bit of a case involved~ I was wondering if, perhaps, we could work together to capture Kaitou Kid one of these days. As a team?”
“Lunch? Hehh… it’s really rare for someone to treat me to lunch whenever I do those things! Furthermore, it’s you, Hakuba-san, who’ll do it! Is it really okay?”
“It was very clever and amusing, and you stood up for yourself without resorting to violence. I’d say that’s worthy of merit. Besides, it’s always nice to spend time with you. What do you say – curry rice?”
“Well done, my kohai! Give those anons what for!”
Gives a small, boyish grin. “Heehee~ Say, say, did I do good?”
“Yes, I think you did splendidly! I’m very proud of you, my little Conan-kohai. Would you like me to treat you to lunch~?”
