*…He was looking at her oddly, and Kyouko wanted to smack the smile off his face. But that would be childish – they were not in a stressful situation, and he wasn’t openly offending her or being rude. So she just gave the male detective an unamused look before speaking.*

According to plan, huh…? Well, unfortunately I have a history for encountering cases that haven’t gone according to plan. So I hope that big detective brain of yours has plotted something with little room for error.

*She got in the car without looking at him further; crossing her legs and sitting motionless in the seat as she stared straight ahead out the window.*

Once Kyouko was safely in the car, Hakuba closed the door and went around to the other side to let himself in. He was overzealous and excited, which often got the sort of quasi-cold response from colleagues and associates, which the detective was used to. He  buckled his seat belt, smirk never quite leaving his face, and then glanced at her.

“Please fasten your seatbelt, if you don’t mind…” Hakuba said at first, adjusting his rear view and side mirror briefly, reaching down to turn the key and engine next. “I’ll give you a brief overview of the case on the way…”

He went over the details in his head wile he waited for some kind of a positive response; an indicator that he should continue. There were a lot of details, some of which were completely unnecessary for someone not working on the actual paperwork for it. How much would she need to know? Enough to keep her from getting killed, certainly. Hm

*…Yes, they would be discussing compensation later. And Kyouko will argue so she receives as little as possible. And hopefully this case wouldn’t end up incredibly big, and thus she doesn’t have to ask her name and/or title as a detective be excluded from… everywhere.*

Yes, we can leave immediately if that is your plan. There isn’t much more preparation I could do, anyways. …A firearm? Well, of—

*She stopped. She wanted to say yes – surely someone in her family taught her how? Kyouko searched her memories… when she was still young… she swore she could see her father scolding the rest of the family for letting little Kyouko even touch a gun, but she had no memory of firing one. Maybe she imagined that memory too. It took a lot of willpower to keep her face from scrunching up in frustration.*

…It’s not incredibly difficult. I’ve studied people at firing ranges— (“—about ten years ago—”) —but I’ve never had to use one myself. Don’t worry about me – if the need arises, I’m sure I can handle it.

“Ah.” So she didn’t. The male detective tilted his head to one side, smile fixed on his face in a particular, reigned in excitement. Hakuba leaned on the door that he held for her, hesitating only a moment before offering a wink and a quirk of that smile, turning it into a lopsided smirk.

“Well, if all goes according to plan, you won’t need to, regardless. I have full confidence in you, but I’d rather not have to worry about gunpowder discharge or blood stains in the first place. So, let us be off."

While waiting for her to get into the car so he could shut her door for her, he fished in his pocket for his pocket watch, which he used to verify the time against his wrist watch before putting it away. Then he checked his phone, somewhat distractedly, to reread the address for the meeting place once more. It was sure to be quite the interesting case.

Yes, hello Hakuba-san – it’s a pleasure to see you again. I’ve been fine, in the sense of… there is nothing particularly terrible happening in my life.

*If the occasional night terrors about being executed, and getting stressed out over a skeleton equaled fine. Kyouko didn’t feel fine (the directional possibilities of this case didn’t help to ease her either), but there was no point in talking about it. So she would just keep to simple phrases and a calm face, and give just enough to keep the conversation and curious questions away from herself. Nothing she couldn’t handle.*

Don’t worry about any compensation. Being out and mobile is enough for me – I believe I’ve been getting a bit lazy as of late… Anyways, how about you – how have you been?

“That’s somewhat dour, isn’t it? Hm.  I’ve been well enough, myself,” Hakuba lied, thoughts ranging in a similar circle- though, sans the skeleton and all- regarding his own situation. “Just very busy. As for compensation, I’m going to insist that I pay your invoice but we can discuss that after the case if you like."

With the supplies safely stowed, Hakuba shut the trunk and moved to open the passenger side door. "If you’re ready, we can leave straight away. I’ve actually managed to make an appointment with my contact, so the sooner we leave, the better."

He then hesitated. "Ah, and, Kirigiri-san, do you know how to use a firearm?"

Good. Although he was relatively certain that he could handle the case on his own, Hakuba knew that it was always, always wiser to take someone with you. For some reason, having a plus one when dealing with drug-related cases often made the difference between being able to talk things out and having to deal with physical violence.

When Kyouko arrived, Hakuba was putting his field bag of medical supplies into the trunk of his car, which he’d pulled out to the front of his house. He waved at her, offering a pleasant smile and a nod of his head.

“Ah, Kirigiri-san! I’m so pleased that you were available and willing to come with me. I’m hoping that it won’t take too terribly long, and of course you’ll be compensated for your time and efforts. How have you been?”

It’d been a while since they last spoke regarding Hattori and his… situation, but he hoped that they could develop a professional relationship outside of that, as well. Especially as things with the Osakan could get, ah, decidedly messy.
