He wasn’t used to this. As many times as he’d been intimate with someone, the onsen presented a different sort of challenge. She didn’t seem worried. Blushing a little, yes, but she was that sort to begin with. He was the one that was nervous. A mixed bath in the mountains? Hot springs. Alone. There wasn’t even anything inherently scandalous about it all, just a case that took him North to a resort, and she’d been willing to come along to keep him company.
But there, in the warm, steaming waters, he couldn’t help hoping that she wouldn’t comment on him. She seemed content to sit against the side, likewise covered. Perhaps they were both shy.
Hakuba offered a little smile to Ran, sinking just a little lower in the bath. “So… Onsen… this is fun, isn’t it?”
Dinner had been amazing, the candlelight, the soft music, and the food. Oh the food was divine. But the best thing about the evening had been the company. Ran loved spending every moment she could with the Detective. Now, she sat across the table from him, chin in her hands and eyes transfixed on his own. His brown irises were so inviting in the glow of the candles. She was so happy he’d taken her to the restaurant. She didn’t have much chance to dine on Italian food and when she had, it wasn’t of the caliber this place had to offer.
They’d spent the better half of an hour enjoying pasta and conversation and when he ordered dessert, Ran knew better than to protest. She was interested as she’d never had Tiramisu before. She’d only heard about it.
When the waiter brought the plate over, Ran hadn’t even thought to ask why there was only one serving. It looked so delicious, the flaky layer upon layer tempting her with the aroma of coffee and cocoa. She took a deep breath. “It looks so good.” She commented, watching out of the corner of her eye as he raised a fork. Slicing a small piece off the side he held it up for her. Giggling, Ran opened her mouth and took a bite. The aroma was only half the experience as it almost melted on her tongue. She savored the taste before swallowing and taking the fork from him. Gingerly, she copied his motions and fed him a piece with a blush. She hoped the evening would never end.
“Ran… Thank you very much.” He accepted the box with both hands, and bent over to place a kiss on her cheek first, then her lips. Soft, careful, sweet. “Happy Valentine’s to you, too, darling. Now, you’ll get your return gift from me on White Day, but I didn’t want you to be without today, so…"
He transferred the box to he one hand, then dug in his suit jacket pocket with the other, and offered a tiny, plush unicorn. "It’ll make more sense, later. Shall we go to dinner now~?”
The cold was settling into Ran’s bones, causing a few shivers to run up her spine. She didn’t care, considering her company. She could feel the warmth from his breath, so close to her as he wrapped them both in the scarf. A blush crept into her cheeks and she looked up into his eyes, biting her lower lip. He was certainly one with words. “Th-thank you.” She stuttered, not from the cold, but from the hundreds of butterflies she felt in her stomach. He always seemed to do that to her. She nodded. “Yes, of course.” She took his offered arm with a smile.
“Splendid."
Arm in arm, Hakuba led her away from the agency with a glance upward at the sky. Despite being early afternoon, the heavy clouds blocked out the sun and, well, most everything any significant distance away. The detective briefly wondered if it would interfere with their plans for the day, but in the end just smiled, pulling the girl closer to himself.
"I was thinking that we could walk the first leg of the journey…” he said, glancing down at her as they made their way over the white-speckled sidewalk. “Take the train to Shibuya… And I’ll have a car sent ‘round when we’re finished shopping, if that’s all right.”
