Idle Weather Shop Talk

“Yeah, that’s right. For the past couple of years. That’s really where I started to take on serious cases,” she explained, though she was still on alert. Masumi could be sociable and still keep some secrets.

“If you’re Hakuba Saguru, then I guess that explains a lot. You’re the Superintendent General’s son and a private detective too.” She had heard of him a couple of times, mostly during Kaitou Kid heists which he had failed to attend for any number of reasons. After experiencing that level of foolishness and puzzlement, she couldn’t blame him for using any excuse to get out of it.

Ah, disappointment vanished, Hakuba’s smile quirked at one corner of his lips, brows raising in appreciation at Sera’s knowledge. “Absolutely right, yet again,” he said, nodding to her. “You’re two for two thus far."

It would be exaggerating to say that he was impressed, but he was at least pleased with their conversation as it stood. The blond detective wasn’t one to get overly excitable with people that he’d just met, particularly not with the fairer sex, and so simply went back to his coffee for a moment.

Then, after another taste of hazelnut and whipped cream, he gave an idle hum. "Are you enjoying the work here?"

The voice hadn’t so much startled her but it was surprising to say the least. She had ventured a little further from Beika and hadn’t been expecting to see anyone she knew. It seemed that her idea had been correct, but this person still seemed to know her which was strange enough on its own.

“I am,” she replied, glancing over at him cautiously. Blond hair and mixed features, polite manner of speech, knowledge of her profession, young age… “You must be one as well. A detective, I mean.”

Guard up. He could still be one of them.

“Yes, that’s right.” It didn’t surprise him that she didn’t already know his name, though Hakuba felt a little disappointed, regardless. He wasn’t nearly as famous as Kudou, after all, and his travelling schedule kept him out of the Japanese limelight far too often– at least for Baaya’s taste, apparently, given how often she complained to him about it.

“Hakuba Saguru. A pleasure to meet you, Sera-san. I’ve heard good things about you. From…” Hakuba tilted his head to look her over, curiously. “America, if I remember correctly. At least recently.” He took a sip of his coffee. “Is that correct?”

Masumi was getting tired of these pointless afternoons shadowing the boyfriends of classmates’ older sisters and the like. Rarely did they ever amount to anything and she would end up getting disappointed responses from those that asked her to do the job in the first place. Payment hadn’t always been necessary but having someone say outright that her performance wasn’t worth payment always put her a little on edge. It wasn’t her fault that smoke didn’t always necessarily mean fire. She did her job and she did it well.

Once again, the smoke had ended up just being fog and she cursed the idea of reporting in later. Plopping down on the windowsill of a busy shopping district she sighed and pulled out her phone, tapping away a quick text to her young roommate.

Another unproductive day…

“Pardon me,” a voice said from quite nearby. “Are you Sera Masumi?"

Hakuba leaned against the wall just past the window, coffee cup in hand, and offered a warm smile. He hadn’t expected to see the other detective here, of all places, but he’d heard of her at the station and had always meant to introduce himself.

"Detective, right?"
