He stopped, took a deep breath, and attempted to regain his composure. It would do him no good to show quite so much vulnerability to someone like Kuroba Kaito– he’d just use it against him.

“Well sorry for not being able to read your every emotion…” Hm, he’s very British when he’s annoyed.

"Yes… well…! How do you think I feel attempting to figure out your ridiculous riddles all of the time?! God, your heist notes are so unnecessarily vague and complicated…! Blasted kanji and Japanese idioms and… bloody wordplay…! It’s a wonder that ANYONE can sort them out!"

“I’d ask you why you haven’t done so already. Would it be because you’re a coward, or…?”

“A coward?! Kuroba-kun, I’ve several hundred cases under my belt, with a successful arrest record almost unheard of for my age – in both Japan and England!” It was difficult to resist listing specific numbers, but as that always seemed to annoy people rather than impress them, he forced himself. Instead, he glared.

“Don’t you suppose that there might be other reasons not to turn a criminal in, or are you also just as narrow-minded as Nakamori-keibu? Let me guess, all detectives and law officials are the same, right? Just as all crimes are somehow equal despite intent. GOD you’re so infuriating!"

“Oh? You have? Is the evidence admissible in court?”

“If he’s as good as you say he is, he’ll probably disagree- your deduction is mostly based on circumstantial evidence.”

“Oh, I think Conan-kun would have a certain feeling about you. He’s quite good at that. Besides, what would you do if I told you that, yes, I do have the evidence necessary, and everything I need to fill out whatever paperwork is thrown at me~?"

“Although he was on my original list, I’ve since been able to rule him out, Kuroba-kun. Don’t tell me that you’re resorting to passing the buck simply because you’re frightened that I might be getting too close~? 

"If you’re really not worried about Conan-kun finding out your secret, which you claim doesn’t even exist, perhaps I’ll invite him over one of these days… We’ll come for a little visit. Do a mock interrogation at your home. What do you think of that? It sounds like a wonderful training exercise, and I’d love to have a second opinion on my deduction from someone who actually knows what they’re talking about…”

“Catching me? I will remind you, again, that I am not KID.” He really didn’t take much offense to the ‘insane’ comment- a lot of the greats were called insane.

"So you persist in saying, but I know that my deduction is sound. You’re just fortunate that I’m too much of a gentleman to go spoiling your secret to said little kouhai… Can you imagine what he would do if he discovered where you lived~?"

“Oh? So you think he’s just a prodigy?”

“Not just any prodigy, but an incredible little detective in his own right. I daresay he’ll be better than any of us by the time he reaches university. God, I can’t wait to see what he does in the future. Don’t get me wrong, Kudou-san is amazing, but Edogawa-kun shows not only the same aptitude but a certain dogged determination that will surely set him apart.”

“If I have it my way, I’ll personally foster those talents and skills so that he will have the best possible chance of becoming the greatest international detective that the world has ever seen!”
