In all honesty I’m not a very conventionally romantic person. I don’t hate Valentine’s, but I don’t particularly have much of an opinion of it either. That said I think it’s never a bad thing to celebrate love in all its forms, whether on a special occasion like today or just because.
So this post aims to do just that. Let’s count down to one! (I’ll just put this caveat upfront that it’s almost all either SouRin or MakoHaru so you can look away if you don’t enjoy either ship…)
bonus: SouRin’s “I want to be your friend!”
Ok I lied, actually there are six moments. I love this scene. It’s genuine, and emotional, and perhaps the most truth that we see from Sousuke all season.
But why I want to talk about it is because of what gets lost in translation. Here’s what Sousuke is saying in Japanese.
「俺は水泳を止めろ。けど、最後に、お前と本当の仲間になりたい。凛、お前と！」
And this is what I would translate it as, quite literally. The subs are not wrong, but I don’t think they fully convey Sousuke’s meaning either.
“I’m going to stop swimming. But, at this final moment, I want to become true friends with you. Rin – with you.”
See the slight difference? The subs highlight it by putting the your in italics in the last screencap, but Sousuke doesn’t actually even say the word “friend” in that statement. The emphasis is entirely on the with you. It’s really, really sweet, and Rin-centric, and you can feel all of Sousuke’s love for Rin spilling out right here.
