Tagging: if you want to do the thing please do the thing I have too many amazing RP partners to tag everyone.

BASICS:

name: Melissa/Gab
age: 29
preferred pronouns: she/her
sexuality: Demi

zodiac sign: Virgo
taken or single: Hella taken

EXPERIENCE:

how long (months/years?): 4.5 years for Hakuba, 17 years total. (Frick, I’ve been RPing since before some of you were born.)

how’d you startI guess actually I started doing tabletop RPing with my bros back in the old, old days, but let’s just talk about tiny Gab in Jr. High discovering the internet and a pokemon RPing forum on lionking.org and from there discovering TLK MUCK and so on. Omg. Bear told me to get a tumblr blog, though… once she learned that Clover had convinced me to try playing DCMK taught me the mysteries and miracles of roleplaying a feature character instead of an OC.
best experience: Goodness so many. I still adore the original story that I made this iteration of Hakuba up for more than most things in life, though. THE CALL OF THE RAVEN. But, ack, trying to pick other things? I mean… just look at my archive T_T; <3

MUSE PREFERENCES:

female or male:  Male (I can write female just fine, I just enjoy writing guys for some reason)
multi or single: Single (though I always have an army of OCs and background characters close at hand…)

WRITING PREFERENCES:

fluff, angst or smut: EUghhhh humor and drama with a peppering of flirting…?
plots or memes: Plot! Memes are fun for drabbles/one-shots, but I have a hard time doing much else with them.
long or short replies: Long… sorry. T_T
best time to write: When I’m not tired… w… a i t
do you like your muse(s): SO MUCH. I feel, in a lot of ways, that Hakuba is a close and personal friend. He watches out for me, I watch out for him, and we have a lot of fun together. 😀

11 and 12?

11. What’s your biggest pet peeve when it comes to RPing?

When there is absolutely no give/take in an RP relationship. I am fine with coming up with most of the plots and whatever if the other person can’t think of something, but I HATE having people come up to me, say that they’re bored, and expect me to come up with a long and involved plot line entirely revolving around THEIR character when they CLEARLY have no interest in me or my muses, aren’t willing to listen to any headcanons but constantly want to tell me all about their own, and can’t come up with any ideas or at least help with preferences or some direction or whatever.

“IDK just entertain me” … .. … nothing will make me NOT want to RP with you as quickly as that. I am a busy person. I multi-task. I have a lot of friends. I am constantly running around. I love to RP, but I will not put up with being bullied into it and I am NOT being paid to be YOUR GAME MASTER.

This has happened on too many RPing places. My characters are NOT your toys.

Also, if  you want to ship with me, be prepared to earn it. A person can avoid a lot of the time-consuming build-up if they pre-plot with me, but I expect the person to really have some good ideas, have given it careful thought, willing to do test things, etc.

And if I say “I am not comfortable with the thing,” I AM NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THE THING. The more you press, the MORE I will ignore/avoid you.  Romance can be fun to write but if that is ALL you are after… please find another partner! There are plenty out there that will give you the kind of RP that you want.

12. What’s your biggest pet peeve when it comes to the fandom you RP in?

Over sexualization of the characters, though honestly that’s rampant in any fandom… it just seems incredibly out of character for most of them. I mean, this is a shounen series… come on, guys.

(And yes, I realize that I probably sound like a hypocrite given the habits and behaviors of my interpretation of Hakuba, but I feel it’s important to note that one of the reasons why Hakuba seems so DIFFERENT among the Gosho Boys is that he IS outwardly flirty and doesn’t seem to be AFRAID of that sort of thing… the contrast is certainly there, and I’m guessing it’s a matter of cultural difference.

But when you have an MC who can’t admit to a girl that he’s liked forever, knows that there’s mutual feelings, etc… and then make him the fandom bicycle.. it’s like… where did that come from? I thought he was shy and really reserved with his emotions and that sort of thing…????

I AM REALLY REALLY ANNOYING WHEN IT COMES TO MISREPRESENTATIONS OF CHARACTERS. Which is probably stupid because it shouldn’t matter and I’ve made 98% of what my Hakuba is up so?!?!!?!?!

UGGHHHHHH LET’S JUST SAY that there’s a time and place for sex  stuff and I don’t want it to be so OVERT because  I am typically a very private person KEEP IT AWAY FROM MY CUTE FANDOM LOL *DIES*)

7, 15, 3 (strengths too for 3)

7. List three honest flaws your favorite character has and talk about how those flaws make them problematic.

I don’t know if this is supposed to be about my muse or my favorite character in the fandom (not the same thing), or just in general… so uh… I’ll just do it for Hakuba:

  1. He is sometimes stupidly sensitive, and once he’s decided that someone doesn’t like him, he will twist their words to suit that idea and take it out on them. It’s problematic because a lot of times, it really is just an honest misunderstanding!
  2. He’s, uh, sexist. I have a huge long rant and explanation about this in my drafts, and it would take way too long to explain here, but he DEFINITELY treats women different than men. Sometimes for better, sometimes for worse, but either way, even when it shouldn’t matter, it does.
  3. He really does expect people to carry their own weight, be responsible for themselves, own up to their mistakes, correct said mistakes, take criticism with finesse, and watch their freaking temper. Respect is lost very quickly when people fail to behave in a way that he considers professional.

15.Without naming anyone, have you ever refused/simply avoided another RPer in the fandom because of things you’ve heard others say about them, or because of their popularity? If so, why did you feel the need to?

I have been warned about people before, but I’ve never outright refused to play with anyone. Sometimes I click better with some people than others, which makes replies much easier/faster to get out, but I have never just not RPed with someone, especially based on someone else’s opinion.

3. As a mun, what are three of your biggest flaws when it comes to being someone’s RP partner?

Flaws:

  1. I am SLOW, especially if I get insecure or unsure about something. Like, if I know the other person is hoping for a specific reaction, but I don’t know what and they’re not being particularly communicative, I will just freeze up and get writing block. And then that starts a spiralling cycle of GUILT for not replying and spinning wheels and…
  2. I use and reuse stock phrases way too much and I think it not only inflates my writing, but makes it boring. Everyone’s always blinking, nodding, tilting their head, clearing their throat, arching their brow… I should really try a lot harder to come up with new and interesting turns of phrase.
  3. …I tend to steal scenes when I don’t feel like there’s enough drive going on and then steer it in whatever direction sounds fun at the time. I hope people don’t feel… uhm… outwritten when that happens, and enjoy coming along for the ride. c_c;

Strengths:

  1. When I am on my game, I am FAST. And despite not proofreading, like, ever, most of my writing is at least somewhat decent?
  2. For the most part, I actually research the stuff that I talk about, which I HOPE results in interesting details and authenticity to my writing~
  3. I can almost always come up with SOME sort of plot or justification for plot as long as there’s enthusiasm involved! 8D

2 and 6

Doing this in reverse-order so I can stick most of my 2nd answer behind a cut:

6. Is there a character that the rest of your fandom adores that you just don’t like/are indifferent to? Who is the character and why?

For the longest time, it was KID/Kaito. I could write a huge long rant about it, but fortunately, through the grace of good writers, I have come to accept him as a good character with a lot of potential. I still hate most of his fans, though, especially when they put him on a pedestal and completely ignore all of the canonical stuff that makes him so interesting.

There are a handful of other characters that I’m just “meh” toward, but it’s not a big deal. Having such a large cast (most of which is amazing) really helps to dilute what junk does exist. 🙂

2. Are there any plot tropes you are sick of/refuse to RP? If so, what are they and why?

There are plenty… a lot are irrational biases (being stuck in a video game, zombies, etc– you have to have a rEALLY good idea and plan for those or I will NOT be interested AT ALL), but one that I am especially sensitive to and tired of seeing is the unrealistic accidental pregnancy… and moreso when it ends in miscarriage.

And here I will explain why:

It’s a lot harder to get pregnant than people realize. The typical human female has a window of 1-5 days per month that they are fertile. Most average about 3 days. That’s halfway through the cycle. Yes, people can and do get pregnant their first time having sex, but it’s a lot less common than popular media would have you believe.

It’s one thing if you have a couple who oops and keep forgetting their preferred method of birth control, but have very active sex lives (this is realistic and happens a lot); it’s another thing if two characters get drunk and have sex for the first time ever and it’s amazing (your first time is usually very much not), AND they manage to get pregnant.

Especially if they are in any way unhealthy. For example, I have PCOS. I will probably never get to have kids, despite wanting and trying for them.

Which brings me to the miscarriage thing.

Yes, it can and does happen. Usually if it’s going to, though, it’s going to be before a woman even knows that they’re pregnant. Most miscarriages aren’t even noticed. Pregnancy is a precarious thing. And speaking as someone who has had one (early on), it hurt and it was sad, but it didn’t ruin my life; it was just like a particularly heavy cycle that came late. It can be very traumatic later on, but don’t do it if you just want to avoid having to write a child.

Don’t do it without good reason. ESPECIALLY since this is one of those sensitive topics for a lot of people. You NEVER know what your writing partner has gone through or is going through. You never know what’s going to trigger someone. Ask. Be sensitive. Do not assume that it’s just okay to do this kind of thing. Err on the side of caution. This also goes for things like suicide, self-harm, rape, etc.

Pregnancy scares can be a fun conflict, depending on the type of story that you’re writing. It’s a huge, life and relationship changing event. Pregnancy itself can put characters through a whole different set of challenges for your characters, and that can be great. Miscarriages can and do happen. They can be painful, physically and emotionally.

For the record, I’ll mention that I have RPed the scenario out before, and it can work. I’ll probably do it again in the future, too. I’m actually planning on a pregnancy arc with one RP partner already, because of the juxtaposition of ‘domestic life vs intense professional life,’ which is the overall plot arc for those characters. Pretty sure that the pregnancy will succeed, though, since the characters are both very proficient, responsible people.

But all of this need to be handled with respect, they need to be realistic, and please, for the love of all that’s holy, don’t use it as trick for cheap drama and lazy writing. It’s insensitive, annoying, and I will be instantly turned off from it.

And, on that note, a brief mention of mpreg: I’m not really a fan of it, but I’ve done one or two scenarios where it worked for me in the past. Both were carefully plotted, involved a lot of pseudo-science/magic, and it was more about a reproductive organ change than anything. There were still a lot of complications, it had a high magic cost, lots of consequences, and was a fairly intensive as far as pre-planning and maintenance and so on. They were emotionally exhaustive plots, and while I think it turned out well and satisfying, it’s not something that I am exactly eager to repeat for the reasons mentioned above. Basically, if I were to run a plot involving that again, it certainly would not be on tumblr.

1, 8, 10

1. Are there any characters in your fandom or faceclaims you refuse to RP with? Who and why?

No, though sometimes I wish I could. There are just certain characters that I know will not yield any sort of interesting interaction with Hakuba, but unfortunately, they’re a thing, so it’s unavoidable.

Not going to name names, though. Rest-assured, it’s not Heiji. I love Heijis.

8. Out of the really popular pairings in your fandom, what’s your nOTP?

Kaishin. I don’t get it, I don’t like it, and them being together removes the whole platonic brother thing that I am 110% a fan of for them. That said, if you like Kaishin, more power to you. I’m not gonna tell you to stop shipping them. But I’m not going to pretend to enjoy it, either. I will, however, pretend that really well-drawn fanart is canonical fanart that they found online and are freaked out about.

…seriously, though, I love Kaito/Shinichi as brothers. Actual brothers, friend brothers, whatever. I think they’re freakishly cute like that and  it’s something that I need in my life.

Also I will probably laugh if it turns out that they are related in the end. Gosho did say in an interview that there was a reason why they looked so similar, and he was talking about an IC reason, not just “I can only draw 4 different faces lol oops” …

10. What’s something you really hate seeing on your dash that seems to be popular with almost everyone else?

Incredibly sexual magic!anons. I have a difficult time taking them seriously, and since I’m here to write stories that actually have plot arcs, I just… I dunno. It’s hard to stay IC and then really hard to maintain it outside of a one-shot thing because it just doesn’t make sense most of the time.

I get that they’re fun, but I would much rather see things as drabbles than ongoing threads that may or may not influence actual storylines. This is why I don’t do M!As anymore, incidentally.
