A Little Assistance

”I hope she hasn’t gone too far,” but it was likely to be the exact opposite. They had spent a large chunk of their time discussing the case, giving the roaming pooch the chance to wander even further from home.

Spinning on the heel of his sneakers, he jabbed a finger in the direction of the alley he had mentioned before. “There’s still plenty of time before the sun goes down, and the alley isn’t far.”

Conan gave no warning before he bolted down the street. Hakuba’s legs were longer than his own, and would likely catch up — but the sooner they found the dog, the better.

“I’m right behind you,” Hakuba called after the boy as he took off, ready to run, himself.

He wondered, briefly, if this was why Hattori enjoyed being around the little detective so much; there was just a sense of energy being around him. Everything was always go, go, go, which was so terribly unlike the adults. It lent urgency to the case, which was especially helpful in situations like this, and made it that much more fun.

Pounding pavement with long strides, Hakuba could catch up easily, but he kept his eyes open for Conan to dart away at any moment – something he’d personally observed before.

Conan followed Hakuba’s gaze and hummed thoughtfully to himself. It wasn’t far, but dogs were capable of winding up in another city entirely if their need to run about was strong enough.

When presented with the photo, Conan’s eyes narrowed. His chin was taken between his thumb and forefinger while a wrinkle formed between his brows. He couldn’t deny how obvious the scratches were, but why go through all that trouble to snatch a dog — or, more likely, something it wore? It wouldn’t be the first time, but he had hoped that people were above dognapping.

”Was it a habit of theirs to bring their dog with them everywhere, or was this the first time?”

“Habit, as far as my client has said, though I’ve never noticed dog hair in their car before…”  Hakuba frowned as he thought over the niggling detail, looking Conan over again in the process. God, adorable and so observant. Perfect combination.

He turned his attention back to the case at hand, reaching into his suit jacket for his little black notebook while he put the phone away. Flipping to the current page, the blond glanced over his notes then nodded.

“Then again, they’re very wealthy, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they had their car detailed weekly. As for Mikki, she’s supposedly very obedient, which lends credence to the idea that she was dognapped… even so, I’m to look for her in the immediate area, just in case."

It was far easier to play the adorable, helpful child around those he hadn’t spent a lot of time around, or those that didn’t know his true identity. While Hakuba seemed capable on his own, he hoped that he wouldn’t become another that figured his secret.

”What’s the dog’s name, and how’d it get out?” Conan wanted to asked what it was the owner wanted from the canine’s collar, but would wiggle his way into that question later.

“Her name is Mikki, and the current theory is that she somehow got out of my client’s car while it was parked at an office building, just two miles from here…”  Hakuba glanced in the direction of the building – north east – then back down to Conan with a sort of helpless frown.

“They think she just got out through the window, but I wonder if, perhaps, someone broke in to let her out. There were little scratches on the door next to the window, and it’s so terribly easy to break into those older cars. Here, I’ll show you a photo."

The taller detective pulled out his phone to scroll through the evidence that he’d captured earlier that morning, and held it out to him. Sure enough, the black car had tiny scratches in the paint, indicative of a metal object and several false starts to get between the door and the pane of glass.

"I have to admit that I’m more than a little upset at my client for leaving their dog in their parked car, but I suppose that can’t be helped now…"

”I don’t know about a water source, but there’s an alley where a bunch of strays gather.” He wasn’t about to admit that he had sneaked into the alley more than once just to pet the homeless hounds — he couldn’t help it, he was just as much of a sucker for dogs as Hakuba was.

Skipping back a few steps, he tugged at the taller detective’s sleeve.

”Come on. It’s this way. If it’s not there, we can look at the park.”

Oh, god, Edogawa-kun was cute.

Hakuba’s smile only broadened as he nodded, allowing the boy to lead him wherever he wanted to take him. “That sounds like the perfect place to begin looking, yes… brilliant idea, Conan-kun! It’s no wonder that you’re so well-spoken of. I imagine we’ll have this mystery solved in no time at all.”

To say that this was one of the foreign detective’s dreams would be an understatement; he could think of nothing better than to spend the afternoon with such a bright and helpful young detective.
