“Nah,” was the magician’s simple response, grin stretching wider as he waved a hand, dismissing any concern the blond might have. “It’s just…”

And here he trailed off, something sheepish and a little embarrassed flashing across his face. He hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck, gaze flickering off to the side, before a quiet chuckle left his lips and he turned to look at Hakuba again, grin softening into a warm smile.

“I kinda missed you, is all.”

He hesitated, watching the other boy, then chuckled, setting the glasses down on the desk. Hakuba pushed back from it, got to his feet, and closed the distance between them with casual stride.

“Kind of missed me?” he asked, head canting to one side. “Only ‘kind of’?” It was only a mock pout at best, and he reached for Kaito’s hands as soon as he was close enough, expression warm, relieved, and happy. “Come here… I missed you, too. A great deal, in fact.”

“Hey, Hakuba? You awake?” A silly question, really, but it was only a way of making his presence known and not give the poor detective a heartattack. Smoothly sliding through the window and closing it behind him, he turned, giving the blond a small grin. Really, though, Hakuba should’ve gone to bed hours ago. Although, he was hardly one to talk. “You got a minute?”

Thank goodness for Kaito’s forethought, which reduced the chances of full-blown panic to being only merely startled. “Ah?” Hakuba asked, blinking as he turned away from his work hunched over the desk, and pulled the pair of silver-rimmed reading glasses from their perch on his nose.

“Oh, Kaito… Good evening.” The detective rubbed his eyes, then offered a pleasant smile of his own, slanted, happy to see him but, as always, not far from puzzled concern. “Yes, of course. More than, if you’d like. Is something wrong?"

And a bit too much flattery for yourself. I don’t do that at the expense of others and you know this very well.

“Didn’t you say you’ve met the guy only once before? Did you tell him all about yourself? Besides… you guys were on a case, right? So perhaps the focus was a little somewhere else?” Although the stunt with the phone was a tad risky, just a little.

But you must really dislike him… no wonder he was confused at me playing you, I was way too nice.

“Fair enough, Kuroba-kun… apologies; my feathers were a little ruffled, and I seem to have taken your attempts at smoothing them a bit too carelessly.Yes, we’d only met once, and the spirit of competition was certainly the order of the day. Unfortunate, really…”

“…I had rather hoped that Hattori-kun and I could have been friends. Ah, but this is a subject for another day, really. I could endlessly debate the Koushien, but let’s not. Instead, let’s just hope that KID avoids the tacky apparel next time, and we can avoid this whole mess.”
