The Meaning of the Monocle

He tilted his head in confusion but replied eager. “Don’t worry about it. Let’s watch it.”

Although something tugged at the detective with guilt, Hakuba did as requested and got it set up. “I’ll warn you ahead of time,” he said, glancing over to Kaito while biting his lip. “But I hope it’ll be worth it. It’s all about, well, stealing as I previously mentioned, and magic. It’s one of my favorites in this genre."

Almost giddy, he adjusted his position on the couch again to get comfortable, then tucked into his slice of chocolate cake which, somehow, went very well with the particular selection of wine. What better way to spend the evening? Dinner be damned, dessert forever!

“May I have a kiss, too?” (Sorry, I really tried to resist.)

“Like you even need to ask,” the thief murmured, closing the distance between them in one smooth motion. He grinned, a spark of mischief suddenly flashing through his eyes and instead of wrapping his arms around the blond’s neck to pull him into a soft, deep kiss like he might have otherwise done, he moved onto the tips of his toes, arms crossing comfortably behind his back—

—and just barely pecked Hakuba on the lips, the touch fleeting and light, before bouncing back a few steps again.

“Will that do~?” He asked, head tilting to the side and grin widening, playfully.

“Oh come now,” Hakuba said, dry expression quickly ruined by the amused smile that came to his lips. “I know that detectives are supposed to chase thieves, but I thought I’d earned some kind of extra privilege by now…"

Though, even having said that, Hakuba knew that it wasn’t exactly true. Not with this thief. He rolled his eyes and stepped after him, one brow raised over a lopsided smirk.

“The door will always be open at anytime.” He smiled and chased away the demons. “The drinks will be free. The owner won’t mind."

He laughed and finished off the wine in his glasses. Setting it down on the table he leaned back against the back of it and sighed content with life at the moment.

Chuckling, Hakuba gave him a look, then nodded, leaning back into the corner of the couch. "That’s very generous of him. I’ll definitely have to drop by when I can. Perhaps challenge him to a round or two of cards or…” He laughed again, shaking his head.

“God I can just see that ending in disaster. Perhaps I ought to save my pride and change topics, hm? I was thinking we could watch a heist film. I’ve one in mind, even… I think you’ll like it, though it is American…"

Carefully balancing the plate of cake on his knee, Hakuba leaned forward to take the remote in his hand, turning on the TV and flipping through the digital movie catalog. "Actually, you might have seen it, given the subject matter… Now You See Me is the title.” A pause.

“…there is a brief scene with… well, it may be a little frightening, but I can skip over that part. If you’re interested."

japansfamousdetective:

“Everyone has the right to speak their mind, regardless of fame or how the other person handles the information being said.”

This conversation feels frustrating to her and she’s struggling to find the words to properly explain herself. Of course it might be because the woman is a bit intimidating, and it doesn’t help it’s Hakuba’s mother, but she feels like Hakuba is getting some rather unfair judgement from the woman. It doesn’t help they have similar views on truth and criticism.

“Regardless of tact, or lack thereof, the reasons in which he says things people may not like are his own. And if he feels those reasons are correct I don’t see why it is up to some one else to judge him for those reasons, unless it has caused harm to someone in any such way. Your son does not seem the type to say things just to hurt some one, he is very caring and polite.”

“For the most part yes, he is. Saguru-kun is very well mannered in most situations, but there are key times when he’s lost his temper and spoken out of turn… though, usually, it’s just his getting his foot stuck in his mouth that is the most trouble."

Marion sighed, regarding the young woman with a tilt of her head. "Please don’t misunderstand me, Kudo-chan; you’re a lovely girl and I do appreciate that you’re standing up for my son. I can definitely see why he’s so fond of you and your spirit, but he could do well to remember to keep his temper in check. That’s all. Particularly when it escalates into a full-on rant to those undeserving of his silver tongue."

Kaito watched him then looked to the ground and smiled sadly. “He never would. That was Jii, eternally loyal. He was in fact very much involved in my moonlighting because of that …. “

He fell silent again. The image of Jii’s broken body flashed painfully in front of his face. He shook he head and took another long swallow of wine. “I inherited the Blue Parrot after he passed.”

“…does that mean that I can still come to visit?” Hakuba asked, tilting his head with a lopsided smile. It didn’t surprise him that Jii had been involved with the KID stuff. After all, no one that good at cards and sleight of hand was completely innocent of trickery. Always beating him. Dammit. The detective missed him very much.

He took another sip of wine. “You don’t have to give me drinks if you insist, but the atmosphere was quite nice."

Kaito had yet to master the art of not blushing. He tried to counteract the heat of his face with a neutral expression.

“Only as real as the magician. It’s a little better, but that’s probably more from the cream the nurse put on.”

“Wait, are you trying to say that I didn’t have any effect at all? Honestly, Kuroba-kun…” Hakuba laughed, though– Kaito had a point. He was about as magic as broom with a bucket. Wait. "Fine, fine… perhaps this will at least teach you to stop being so rambunctious in class.“

The detective took a seat next to the other teenager and stretched his legs out in front of him, crossing at the ankle with a shrug and a stifled yawn.

"It’s quite distracting, you know."

“Sounds great.” He chirped and crossed to where the plates were. Performing a balancing act he moved them and him self to the couch. Once the plates were settled on the table he sat.

Kaito stared into the wine for a moment before taking a long pull. It was good far better than anything he could have bought. He sighed and felt the tears pool behind his eyes.

“It was Jii. He picked it out. There was a note underneath the bottle saying: ‘Kai-bocsama, this wine is for you and the person who you find in this life that you can’t live with out. I hope you can find your happiness. Forever Loyal, Jii.’.” He said softly lost in the memories. Turning he looked back up to Hakuba. “Relationship aside, even if we remained as friends this bottle still applies. I hope you don’t mind the forwardness of it.”

Hakuba resisted the urge to call Kaito out for being a showoff with the plates, and instead just brought his glass to the couch, carefully pulling himself up onto it in one corner, legs and all. With one hand against the arm, he braced himself enough to fold his legs under him, knees out, and settled, watching his companion, letting him finish before leaning forward to take one of the plates.

“No, not at all,” he said after a moment, voice quiet in respect for the man. “I’m touched… both that you consider me that way, and by your relationship with him. I only knew him as a patron, really, but he was a good man. Billiards, cards…” The detective sighed, looking down at the glass in his hand. “The occasional drink despite being underage…"

His gaze went back to Kaito and he smiled. It was sad, but there was still plenty of warmth behind it. "I liked him quite a bit.” A pause. “And if he was involved with your moonlighting, he never betrayed you to me, despite my nosing around. Not even once.”

kissed!

13: Make out

Kaito grinned when he found the detective. Snatching his arm he half dragged the other to a janitorial closet. It was twenty minutes before he had to show as KID and the impulse at getting the usually controlled detective was just too tempting. Pushing him up against the wall with his body he made fast work at getting as close as possible. Pressing his mouth against Hakuba’s he poured as much passion as he could into the kiss before biting at his bottom lip then swiping his tongue across the sting. The brief thought of getting punched crossed his mind before he relaxed.

Beside who wouldn’t want to have KID kiss them. Even stuffy detectives that like to make fools out of people.

“Wh-what KaITOU-SA–” The squeak was brief, confused, and cut off as the kisses began, and the detective was very quickly compromised. He didn’t punch KID, didn’t even struggle, really; just caved against the wall giving a soft moan as he closed his eyes.

In truth, getting a kiss from KID was… well, he really didn’t mind it at all, other than the fact that he was supposed to be working. But that seemed to be the last thing on his mind at the moment, fingers twitching as he resisted the urge to wrap them back around the thief. He had to keep some boundaries, at least… they were supposed to be enemies.

kissed! (LOL)

11. shoulder kiss

Poker Face was the only thing keeping Kaito from grimacing as he sat in the nurse’s office, shoulder wrapped in bandages as the result of a trick gone wrong.

He didn’t notice Hakuba enter, going over the trick and figuring out where improvement was needed. Then he felt the brush of lips on his shoulder through the wrapping.

“Hakuba?”

“There, now,” the detective said, smirking as he straightened up. “All better, Kuroba-kun. At least, I hope it worked.” It was all teasing, but quite honestly, Hakuba was amused. “Did it? I mean, if magic is real, that ought to have done something…”
