Normally, it was the detective that fell asleep during lunch. It had become routine, even, for the blond to walk into the cafeteria ten minutes late, flop down next to Devin, pull out a pile of case work that he’d only glance at, an apple that he wouldn’t eat, and use his backpack as a pillow to take a nap before the next class period. It happened nearly every day, but play season was different.
True, Hakuba was no less tired during those times, but someone had to be on the lookout, and with Dev overworked as it was, he opted to stay awake. It wasn’t even that difficult, really. There was just something so calming about knowing that there was another set of eyes and ears making sure that he wouldn’t be bothered that was conducive to sleep. Not having that, therefore, kept the detective alert.
He flipped through pages, keeping a careful eye on the time, and took over the duty of giving forewarning five minutes before the bell. Most had cleared out of the lunch room by then, which Hakuba felt ideal for waking up. Leaning over his dozing friend, he gave a gentle nudge, a smile, and whispered quite close to his ear. “Wakey, wakey, Mousey… no more napping; it’s over."
