OPINIONS ON HAKUBA’S OBSESSION WITH TIME.

image

His obsession basically boils down to three things:

  1. The Master Watch – is an heirloom passed down through the men in the honorable Hakuba family line. Technically, Hakuba’s father – The Superintendent General Hakuba – should have taken possession of it when his father died… but when the grandparents disowned Saguru, claiming that the marriage between their son and ‘that foreign tart’ was not sanctioned in the first place (they eloped), and refuse to recognize a half-blooded bastard children as a rightful heir, Hakuba Sr stole it and gave it to Saguru, anyway.
He is proud of his son and thinks that he should be happy to be a part of the Hakuba family, even if it means that their branch has been cut from the larger tree. Oh well.
Hakuba is pleased to show it off at every heist, case,  and interview, proving that he is doing great things and IS a part of the family, whether they like it or not.

  2. Eidetic Memory is a Bitch –  Hakuba’s memory is like a steel trap; very accurate, very detailed, very easy to recall… but along with it comes every other sensory input – sight, taste, smell, feeling, emotions… Most of the time, he’s able to extrapolate just the vital information in terms of data that he can use in paperwork, but it requires a lot of self-discipline and work. Sometimes, however, the ‘flashback’ of memory is so intense that he loses track of what is happening in the present. It all works in tandem with PTSD , and those experiences can be quite triggering.
The watch helps with this in two ways:
First, it acts as a physical anchor that he can use, with ritual to ground himself in the present. This helps to stave off anxiety attacks and more traumatizing memories that he doesn’t want to be forced to live through.
Second, it allows him to accurately record the data for the CURRENT situation, which he then compares to his wrist-watch, then records in his notebook. This way, he doesn’t have to rely on only his memory for analysis, which he is quite picky about. With careful note taking and accurate records, he feels much more confident in his work and control of the situation.

  3. Accuracy as a Scientist – Since Saguru has been shown to be at least a passable chemist, interested in the work and equipment in his grandfather’s private laboratory in Japan, it would stand to reason that he would be used to keeping very accurate notations for every experiment. After all; a single digit can change the entire outcome, and the scientists in the labs do all that they can to check everything to extreme measures of precise calculation.
I think this is why he sometimes includes the milliseconds, etc. when he’s notating the time to others; it’s a habit of working with scientists… and quite possibly humorous to him, since it really is excessive, but some take it quite seriously.

Pride and Obligation

“I’ll go if you join me?~”

“If I… If I join you?”  Hakuba blinked again, looking from him to the couch, then to the blankets in his arms. Well, he supposed that would let him keep track of Kaito easily enough… and he was very tired. Gulping, the detective nodded, stepping closer to the couch. “All… all right. I’ll sit here and you can… just.. get comfortable however…"

He moved to the side of the couch, stiffly taking a seat next to the couch cushions and attempted to figure out how to get his legs arranged… watching Kaito, cautiously, as he swung them up onto the couch to leave room for Kaito to… lie on top of him?

"Like this?”

So, Whitechapel. Obvious JtR reference? Also, Baron. :D You sure it was a good idea to take up that particular headcanon that you may or may not have even written about yet on this blog~?

White Chapel – yes, this was in reference to Jack the Ripper. The private religious academy that my Hakuba attends as a child in the backstory that I totally made up is (ficticiously) located in the Whitechapel District in London, England… and home to the infamous Whitechapel Murders. Where better to put a horrific past full of abuse and pain?

It’s really unfortunate, but something that really was/is common in that kind of school. The priests that do the abuse know just what to say to make the kids feel so guilty that the never expose the truth, allowing them to continue preying on them. Sometimes they’ll go for years before anyone hears about it… and even then, a lot of the churches just shuffle the priests around to different schools instead of excommunicating them or whatever.

Ugh, such a depressing topic… but one that I wanted to include in his past because it lent really well to my theories for his actions. Also, having a detective who is religious, particularly with the rest who aren’t particularly sounded fun to play with. It sets him apart, which is what he should be, given the difference in his cultural background.

Baron – OMG. Yes, it was a good idea, just soul-crushing. That’s where I’m at in the 7 Sins of White Chapel story. The point in the story where some hope is restored to the young Saguru and then we get  the villain with a literal ‘kick the dog’ moment and all hope is lost.

I will, eventually, finish the story… I just really don’t want to write about poor Baron being beaten to death with screaming 9 year-old Saguru helpless to do anything about it…

Pride and Obligation

He pouted and tilted his head to the side. “Maybe but doesn’t alcohol bring out the truth?”

He leaned over with Hakuba and poked the detective in the cheek. “Cute … you’re blushing.”

“It… it has been said that there is truth in wine,” Hakuba admitted, blinking at how close Kaito had gotten. Then, clearing his throat, he put on a pouting frown and blushed harder. “I… I am not. Now go on, get on the couch, get some rest; you must be exhausted."

Waiting Pleasantries

”Yer a detective?” She brought her bare hands up to her face and blew into them hotly, the tips of her fingers curling into her palms. She didn’t hate the cold, but she didn’t appreciate it when it nipped at the parts of her that she had forgotten to cover.

”Madison Grey,” she cast a small smile over the tops of her hands, “It’s nice t’ meet’cha. M’sorry for approachin’ ya the way I did, but I ain’t used t’ th’ area.”

“Yes, I am… and really, it’s not a problem at all, Miss Grey.” Hakuba laughed, a sort of soft, rolling sound. “The bus schedules can be quite tricky to manage in a city like this; it’s easy to get turned around. I’m just pleased that I had the opportunity to help you in some way.”

Always trying to be the charmer, the tall blond quirked his smile so that it slanted crookedly on his face, showing just a little bit of teeth. “Do you mind if I get terribly nosy and ask where you’re headed? I have such a difficult time with my curiosity, being who I am and all."

Pride and Obligation

Kaito gave him a measured look before limping back to the couch. “Yes he is. Don’t worry he’ll come around.”

Leaning slightly towards him he also whispered. “I’d suggest bring sunflower seeds next time.”

The thief straightened, stretched his arms high over his head, and yawned. He was done for the night and couldn’t wait to curl up under the blanket Hakuba had brought down.

“You have always been precious to me. I have really liked you for a long time.” He grinned and blushed slightly looking up at him.

Sunflower seeds, right. Hakuba made a mental note of that, then smirked as he watched Kaito stretch. The action distracted his tired mind so much that he nearly missed the little confession, though the blush caught his attention just in time to backtrack and – “Wh-what?”

Stumbling in place, he dropped the blanket to the floor and shook his head, trying to make sense of it. But no, Kaito had said that he liked him. Really liked him. That he was precious to him. What?

“I… You have?” he asked, tilting his head to one side, cautious. “Is this just the alcohol talking, Kuroba-kun? You should really lie down…” He bent over to pick up the blanket, trying to hide the blush on his own face.
