“…I always have been prone to losing track of time. Thank you, Hakuba-san, it’s lovely. I’ll treasure it…”

Perhaps she should have lashed out, or gone cold or perhaps entirely silent. But rather, she managed to turn her head at the last moment and sneak a little kiss in the corner of his mouth. And then she was backed up and had a sly smirk on her face.

image

“Well, I suppose you best start working on that soon. How could I consider you worthy of the great detective title if you couldn’t find the truth behind such a simple mystery?”

image

The kiss was not missed and Hakuba looked quite pleased as Kyouko drew back from him, offering a smile and the playful quirk of a brow.

“Yes indeed; I’d not want to be amiss for such an opportunity to prove myself to you. Look forward to it, Kirigiri-san… and try not to worry; I’ll do my utmost to unravel your mysteries and take great care in putting the pieces of your puzzle back together again.”

Flicking his gaze up to momentarily glance at the teen as he began to speak in a more hurried and defensive tone, Sherlock smirked to himself. “Oh I don’t doubt that. I am sure you are decent at best as a detective and I will be wasting my time. Still it always helps to check over these sort of things” Sherlock stated dryly. “I am curious to know what sort of expertise you have. Your name appeared very quickly when I imputed part of it in the search bar so there is perhaps hope for you yet.”

The first thing that caught Sherlock’s attention was that his companion appeared to be wearing a deerstalker in the photo. There was no possible way he had chosen to wear that of his own free will. It was hardly fashionable nor was it convenient for investigating. Anyone wearing such a hat was bound to attract the attention of those around them who thought they looked a moron. No, this had to be a deliberate reference to himself. “You’re wearing an ear hat!” Sherlock stated incredulously, his tone containing a hint of surprise. “I was aware you are a fan of mine but I didn’t think you would go as far as to wear such a silly piece of headgear. Even I do not wear it by choice. It started as simply a disguise gone wrong.”

As he read through the article, Sherlock found himself beginning to feel a little irked by the tone in which it was written. The whole thing seemed to imply that he was nothing but a figure which anyone could become a caricature of if they acted and dressed in a certain way. It completely underplayed his intelligence and talent for solving crime by stating that James Hakuba could become his successor and take his place merely because he had an eye for detail and some enthusiasm for solving crime. “Scotland Yard doesn’t need a new favourite detective.” he muttered inaudibly to himself.  Catching sight of Lestrade’s comment about Hakuba being more agreeable than himself, the consulting detective narrowed his eyes. “Agreeable?! I have every right to not have an agreeable personality when everyone around me is so very below me intellectually. It is like being trapped in a room with chickens for an intelligent debate!” He snapped his gaze over to James. “Apparently you would also understand my pain since you are brilliant enough to equal or better me in every way. Then again maybe the fact you are charming means that other people’s thoughtlessness is dulled down to you.”

image

“Oh God,” Hakuba groaned, bringing his other hand up to completely bury his face. This was exactly what he didn’t want to have happen. “Please, Mr. Holmes, it’s just the media – you know they’ll do anything to sell a paper. It’s all absolutely ridiculous. Complete poppycock. God, no;  I’m nothing but a whelp, Mr. Holmes!”

He spoke quickly, attempting to get enough of a defense out to stay on Sherlock’s good side, though he was getting the distinct impression that it was already far too late for that.

“Of course you have every right and reason to be upset. It’s certainly not your fault that they’re all so dull and critical when they can’t even tell a hedgehog from a porcupine, let alone even begin to understand your brilliance!" After an unintentional whimper, the young detective pulled his hands down to look at Sherlock, facing him with no disguise of the mortification he felt, cheeks red, ears pink. But at least they were nearly to the building.

"And the ear hat… the deerstalker cap, god that was my agent’s idea… I’m so embarrassed."

Save Me || toshio-fukawa

toshio-fukawa:

The writer was already on edge from having to fight through the crowd. The careless chatter of city folk, the patter of feet on pavement…. all at once it was almost enough to drive him into full panic mode. For underlying all of the unease caused by unwelcome stimuli was the worry associated with an enormous research paper that he still hadn’t even purchased the right texts for. So, with the full intent of keeping to himself and staying as invisible as possible the writer had tugged on a sweater and set off for Kodemi’s Library and Cafe.

The only precursor to the abrupt seizure of his arm was the sound of screeching tires, which Toshio paid no mind to. He’d just assumed that some idiot had been texting behind the wheel and swerved a little, or…..or….but turns out that it was in fact this lunatic who, after dashing across a busy street, had run straight to him.

“Let go of me!” He cried, getting only a brief glance at his attacker’s face before focusing on the hand that as closed around his arm. It wasn’t a threatening hold, and….and the stranger said he needed help? Catching sight of the panic in the stranger’s intelligent brown eyes Toshio stopped struggling and gulped a few times. Being useless, how could he ever be helpful to someone… “What i-is it? I don’t w-want to buy anything and won’t give you money, if that’s what you’re after.”

image

“Oh, God no,” Hakuba said quickly with a shake of his head. He straightened up, brows knitting helplessly over a nervous smile. “I’m, ah, trying to get away from someone… could you pretend to be one of my clients, just for a moment? I’m a detective; I’ll make it worth your while."

Although he was reluctant to do so, he removed his hand from the other teenager and transferred the coffee cup to it so that he could fish out one of his business cards to offer to him. Despite the unusual circumstances of their meeting, it did appear to be legitimate. Hakuba Saguru, Private Detective.

"You’d just need to walk with me a short while – perhaps to that bookshop? Talk to me as if you’ve got something on your mind. She won’t approach if she thinks I’m in a business meeting. Please. I’m absolutely desperate for your assistance."

And he was, really. That particular woman was someone that he had hoped that he wouldn’t have to deal with for quite some time, yet. No, he was certainly not ready to face her, and he hoped and prayed that this would be evident on his face.

New Year’s Ham

camiechan:

She stayed with him through the night, allowing herself to slip into sleep for only a few hours at a time until morning. However sour she had been at him she couldn’t fight her deep rooted instinct to make sure he’d be okay once he woke up. After all she had never heard of a rodent ingesting alcohol before, so she wasn’t sure if it was even okay for the small animals body.

Morning came all too early for the little hamster, who groaned as he tried to groom himself. Try as he might, Hakuba couldn’t remember ever having a headache this terrible. Though, whether that was from the sheer, proportional, amount of alcohol, or the fact that he was now a hamster, the actual cause was unclear.

Once he’d managed to get his fur looking a little more presentable, Hakuba shook himself out, then crawled up to nudge Camie’s cheek with his front paws. Much as his head ached, he needed food, and as far as he knew, it would all be completely out of reach without a lot of effort. None of which, of course, he was interested in putting forth at present.

Lonely Elegance || kaitomagic

It was a party just like many that he’d attended; men and women dressed in formals, mingling, drinking, enjoying themselves. Unlike the usual affair, however, these were people that he was all too familiar with. A catered event for the police, even, with inspectors and traffic officers alike taking advantage of the open bar. On the one hand, this meant that the shop talk was at least remotely interesting to Hakuba. On the other, it also meant that he was dreadfully alone. Too young to really be part of them (and, really, several resented the fact that he was even involved in real police work), too familiar with their work to just go along as a guest.

Such was the life of the Superintendent General’s son, however. He took it in stride for the most part, finding a perch in a lonely corner to quietly observe while he drank his glass of champagne. It wasn’t the best he’d had, he thought to himself, swirling the pale liquid from side to side. The hors d’oeuvres left much to be desired, as well. Then again, this was just a formality; an event thrown together to make them feel appreciated. It wasn’t at all like the high class parties his mother put together on a regular basis, meant for those with money. This, as nice as the venue was, only had a large enough budget to make them feel like they had money.

He sighed, reading the lips of those who passed him, taking note of skirt lengths, the kind of ties the men wore and how what knots they used, hair color, contact lenses on those who normally wore glasses, and so on. Hakuba checked his watch every so often, verifying the time between pocket watch and wrist, attempting to keep mentally count down the seconds in a little game of accuracy. Most often, though, his gaze was drawn back to the window and the cityscape below, wishing he were wandering rooftops, climbing damned ladders, feet pounding on pavement in hot pursuit of a culprit.

Cheek rested on the palm of his hand, Hakuba let his mind wander. Although he wore white that night, no one paid him mind so long as he stayed in the shadows.  Mm. White. Like a certain thief.

I wonder what he’s doing right now…

It is amusing that the Master would allow such a mundane individual into this Domain. Detectives are expected, but he does not speak of his professional pursuits all that often and usually desires to explore the entirety of each hall and door he spots while here. I only wished that he didn’t entertain those bottles of poison as much as he wishes to linger here.

“<Mister> Hakuba, do you spot an error in my reported VERDICT?”

“It just seems a bit… harsh, is all. Impersonal.”

August 29, Birthday Horoscope Personality: Improviser

birthdaypersonality:

Your greatest challenge is…

going with the flow

The way forward is…

to understand that sometimes life can’t be controlled; you simply have to relax and trust that something good will come to you.

You’re drawn to people born on…

June 21 to July 22

This is a classic case of opposites attract; you have so much to learn from and give each other.

Luck maker

Let the pieces come together

When things don’t work out, relax and think of your life as a giant jigsaw. You may be desperate for luck, but nothing will make sense until all the pieces of your life come together.

People born on August 29 are blessed with an incredible imagination that can take them to the pinnacle of success in their personal and professional life. Reluctant to be confined by the limits of convention, they prefer to analyze all existing information, reappraise it and then present their findings in a new and original manner. As such, they are the great improvisers and re-interpreters of the year.

Although they are wonderfully creative and artistic in their approach, they also thrive on routine and structure. A recurring theme for them is their attempt to impose control or structure upon every situation. As such they are not just positive thinkers but also positive doers; once they have set down their ambitious goals, they move toward implementing them with a selfdiscipline and practicality that inspire amazement in their friends and colleagues alike. Paradoxically, the one area of their lives where they find it hard to improvise or impose structure is their emotional life. Frequently, they will subordinate their private to their professional life, preferring to devote their energies to an environment in which they don’t feel so threatened. It would be beneficial for them, therefore, to reappraise their priorities.

From childhood they will probably have demonstrated their practical and analytical skills, impressing others with their ability to find their way around problems by thinking up new solutions. After the age of twenty-four there will be opportunities for them to focus on their relationships, and it is important for them to take advantage of these opportunities as their need for a fulfilling personal life is strong, however much they try to escape. There will also be an emphasis on creativity during these years.

Whatever age they are, if they can learn that sometimes the best solution to a problem is to stop trying so hard to solve or understand it and to simply trust, they will be able to present to others the fruits of their research in reinterpretations that are both innovative and inspiring.

On the dark side

Withdrawn, impatient, lonely

At your best

Innovative, structured, imaginative

Love Excuses, excuses

Partners often have a hard time competing with the professional priorities of people born on August 29 and may accuse them of using their work as an excuse to avoid intimacy. This is unfair as they are not afraid of intimacy, just unsure how to cope with it. If they can find a partner who can gently encourage them to open up without fear of rejection, they make charming, enthusiastic and communicative lovers.

Health Make relationships a high priority

People born on this day place a high priority on work as a source of satisfaction, but it would be better to emphasise their personal lives as close relationships offer them greater potential for happiness. They will also find that close relationships make them more productive at work because they give them a sense of perspective. Study after study has also shown the health-boosting effects of intimacy. As far as diet is concerned, they should not try to deal with stress by comfort eating or taking recreational drugs or other addictive substances. Regular exercise is highly recommended as it will give their day the structure they love, especially if their personal life is chaotic. Wearing, meditating on and surrounding themselves with the color orange will encourage them to be more spontaneous in their interactions, and burning lavender essential oil will help lift their mood during times of stress.

Career Born designers

These people may devote their energies to a variety of fields but they thrive in technology, computing or design, where they can operate unhindered and impose a sense of structure. Other careers that might appeal include management, self-employment, the caring professions, education, law, science, writing, politics, manufacturing, music and entertainment.

Destiny To benefit others with their intellectual curiosity and sense of style

The life path of people born on this day is to get time on their side by learning to let the pieces of their life come together. Once they are able to go with the flow, their destiny is to benefit others with their intellectual curiosity, wisdom, independence, and sense of style and structure.
