I’ve decided to make this post after all, because I feel that it could really come in handy. This little “guide” was made from information I’ve gathered through research and personal experience, which I decided to group into one place for all to see. I apologize in advance if this turns into a long post, but I hope it’ll help you in some way or another!
Tags with dashes do not get tracked. Most of you may already know this, or maybe not, but tags with dashes do not get tracked. The dash gets replaced by a space.
This is actually one of the reasons why I changed my URL from “the-silverbullet”. Often times, people tagged posts with “the-silverbullet”, and I never saw them, since I couldn’t track “the-silverbullet”. Try it yourself — enter in the address bar “tumblr.com/tagged/the-silverbullet”, or any other tag with a dash in it. You’ll see how the dash gets replaced by a space.
Which leads me to my next tip…
It is generally recommended to create a URL without dashes in them.
This isn’t mandatory, though it is highly recommended, especially if you track your URL (which I highly recommend). Of course, you can also track your URL either without dashes, or with spaces in place of the dashes, as long as people are aware that that’s what you track.
Only your first 5 tags in a post get tracked.
Now here is some information that you may not know about. Believe it or not, only the first 5 tags you tag a post with get tracked. This is why, if you ever need to tag someone in a post, it should always be one of the first 5 tags you make.
Say you tag a post with the following tags:
#tag #another tag #more tags #a tag #this tag #A URL
See how the URL is the 6th tag? It won’t get tracked. It must be one of the first 5 tags, or else the person you tagged won’t ever be notified.
Reblogged posts do not get tracked.
This is a big one for roleplayers. Say someone makes a thread, which you want to reply to. Most roleplayers reblog the post, add their response, and then tag the person to notify them of their response. This will not work. Why, you ask?
Reblogs do not get tracked.
On that note, if you want to reply to a thread, you should make a new post yourself, with your response, and then tag the person. Then they will be notified. Here’s my method:
Click the reblog button on the thread you want to reply to, but don’t actually reblog. Simply copy either the text, or the html, which can be found by clicking the <html> button in the upper right-hand corner.
Then, make a new text post, and paste the thread into the corresponding area (directly into the text box if you copied the text, or into the <html> section if you copied the html).
Then, everything else goes as usual. Reply to the thread, tag the other person, and then post it. It’s a simple solution to keep threads from getting lost, and it can save you some trouble.
I think that’s all for now, though I honestly thought I had more. This may be updated in the future as more information is discovered. I hope this was helpful! <3
